  • -My next guest is a 10-time NBA All-Star --

  • 10 times, yeah --

  • and the president, also, of the NBA Players Association.

  • He also started a new organization called

  • The Social Change Fund.

  • Here is Chris Paul!

  • Yeah!

  • Chris, I'm so happy you're back.

  • Thank you so much for coming on the show.

  • -Yeah, appreciate you having me, Jimmy.

  • -First off, I want to congrats on a great season.

  • I got to say, as great as you were on the court,

  • what you did this season, off the court,

  • as president of the NBA Players Association

  • is even more impressive.

  • People might not realize this, but you played a giant role in

  • actually making the NBA bubble happen.

  • -I played a role.

  • It was a lot of people that helped with coming up with it.

  • But it was a lot.

  • It was a lot of phone calls that had to happen.

  • -Yeah.

  • -A lot of hard conversation amongst us players, right?

  • Because you give not only COVID,

  • but then social justice, right?

  • When George Floyd and everything occurred,

  • we were trying to decide, as players, "Should we play

  • or should we, you know, stay in our communities

  • and make sure that our families are well taken care of

  • and all these things?"

  • So, when we made that decision to go down and play,

  • I was proud of our players.

  • -The one thing I thought was so moving

  • and actually really did kind of shake everyone

  • was after the shooting of Jacob Blake.

  • You, along with the rest of the players,

  • decided to boycott that evening's playoff game.

  • All the games.

  • And you held a meeting that night

  • for every player in the bubble.

  • I also heard a rumor that you guys

  • maybe got a phone call from President Barack Obama?

  • Former President Barack Obama.

  • -I actually reached out to him.

  • And he's actually been just sort of like a big brother

  • in all different types of situations.

  • So, this situation was no different.

  • And just gave some insight.

  • You know, just some unbelievable insight and wisdom

  • that probably only he can give, you know?

  • -I heard that he had a birthday party once --

  • I think it was his 49th birthday --

  • and had a bunch of his favorite NBA superstars.

  • -He always tells this story.

  • Don't believe it, Jimmy, but go ahead.

  • -Let me tell you what I heard. I'm just saying.

  • It might not be true. He had a pickup basketball game.

  • You were nice enough to play with him.

  • Is that true so far?

  • -Keep going. [ Both laugh ]

  • -Then the story -- 'Cause what I hear is that Obama

  • crossed you over so bad that you actually fell down.

  • -See, it's a whole lot of cap.

  • That is exactly what did not happen.

  • He did a crossover. He did a crossover.

  • I didn't fall.

  • But there was so much Secret Service in there, man.

  • If I would have stole that ball from that man,

  • ain't no telling what would have happened to me.

  • [ Both laugh ] You know? So...

  • -You're just being nice. You're being respectful.

  • -Of course, of course.

  • The fact that he's out of office now,

  • I want to see where this is.

  • I want to see where his game is now.

  • -No, don't do it, don't do it.

  • -We play golf occasionally.

  • But next time I see him,

  • I'm gonna just go ahead and check up.

  • Check up on-site.

  • -I want to talk to you about something amazing

  • that you're doing with your pals,

  • Carmelo Anthony, who, gosh, we got to know

  • when he was here in New York, and Dwyane Wade we love.

  • You started something called The Social Change Fund.

  • Can you tell us about this?

  • -Yeah, man. So, it's amazing.

  • I'm sure, Jimmy, you're, like, in group chats

  • and you got friends that you talk to all the time.

  • And for us, we've been, you know,

  • in the league for a long time

  • and we have our own respective foundations

  • and we do our own work.

  • And what we decided during quarantine is that

  • we wanted to start a fund and we wanted to do it together.

  • And, you know, as athletes, you know, they always say,

  • "If you want to go fast, go alone.

  • If you want to go far, go together."

  • We realized that if we come together with this fund --

  • And we have other people --

  • Michael Strahan, Donovan Mitchell,

  • Candace Parker, so many other athletes

  • who are joining with us in this cause.

  • -Before you go, Chris, again,

  • thanks again so much for coming on.

  • I want to talk to you about the upcoming season.

  • You're under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder,

  • but there's some chatter this week

  • that you might get traded, possibly to the Phoenix Suns.

  • Now, when you hear these rumors, what goes through your mind?

  • -Man, I'm going into Year 16, right?

  • So I done heard about every rumor

  • that you could possibly hear.

  • -Yeah.

  • -You know, so you learn to control what you can control.

  • I'm training, getting ready for the season.

  • If something happens, it will.

  • If not, you know, I love being in Oklahoma with our team.

  • We actually just got a new coach yesterday.

  • Yesterday.

  • So, you know, the league is always constantly changing.

  • -I'm just saying, you don't look too bad in a Knicks Jersey.

  • -What? -Well, take a look at this.

  • This looks -- Not bad. I'm just saying.

  • -Jimmy, I don't know.

  • You know probably more than I do.

  • -Oh, my gosh.

  • If you come even close to the Knicks,

  • I want you to co-host "The Tonight Show" with me

  • every season.

  • Chris, wherever you're playing next season,

  • I'll be cheering for you, buddy, either way.

  • -Jimmy, I appreciate you always. -Chris Paul, everybody.
