  • -Welcome back, everybody. We are talking to our good pal

  • James Spader, who is here with us.

  • I love that you're here.

  • And, yeah, I did take off -- I know you didn't ask,

  • but yeah, I took off a few --

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -I didn't ask. -No, you didn't ask.

  • Tina Fey said to me, she goes,

  • "You always wear that kind of fat skinny."

  • [ Laughter ]

  • Just made me laugh.

  • I just kind of have, like, that chubby face kind of thing.

  • -You don't really. I mean, you don't.

  • But -- I mean, I was so happy.

  • I don't know -- It was like a miracle.

  • I just -- I was eating and drinking

  • the entire eight months with abandon.

  • -Really? -Yeah.

  • And I guess it was, you know,

  • going on bike rides and I don't know what.

  • -You look good. -I showed up on the first day

  • for my fitting, wardrobe fitting,

  • and fit in all my clothes fine, no problem.

  • -But you walked in thinking like, "Uh-oh."

  • -I was a little worried.

  • -"Can my character wear sweat pants?"

  • -'Cause I sort of ignore it until the night before.

  • And then I went in.

  • But usually I start out the season, you know,

  • a little bit better off.

  • But, you know, I sort of ignored it this year.

  • And anyway, I went back in and tried on all my wardrobe.

  • And it all fit perfectly.

  • But I must say, it was the wardrobe that I was wearing

  • at the end of last season.

  • -So you can't really judge, yeah.

  • -Yeah, 'cause that's like, I'm wearing the big suits

  • at the end of the season. -Big suits.

  • -But you know what? Who gives a [bleep]?

  • [ Laughter ]

  • I fit in a big suit.

  • -No, you look great in any suit, please.

  • But also this season, the only weapons used are BB guns.

  • [ Laughter ]

  • -Red Ryder. -Red Ryders, yeah.

  • I never had a BB gun.

  • I had an air gun that would make the sound of a BB gun.

  • Nothing would come out of it. -Oh, really?

  • -So you'd pump it and then you'd go...

  • [ Air pops ]

  • Yeah, that would be the sound. [ Laughter ]

  • -That was so funny.

  • -Thank you, Fred. He's right on it.

  • -I love that noise. -That's the deal.

  • Watch out there, you're under -- yeah.

  • Hold up. [ Air pops ]

  • Yeah, and then put the cork back in.

  • But no, it was just an air gun.

  • My friend had one once.

  • It fascinated me to shoot a beer can with a BB gun.

  • I'm just not that guy. I can't do that.

  • It's a joke when I hold a thing.

  • If I would do a movie and I have to have a weapon or something,

  • I look like an idiot.

  • -Yeah, but that's not the same at all

  • as, you know, shooting a BB gun.

  • -No, it's fun. -Yeah.

  • -No, I think it's fun, exactly.

  • You were telling me though that this Season 8 now,

  • "The Blacklist" starts tomorrow, you can just jump right in?

  • -It's pretty crazy. Yeah, there's no --

  • I mean, we ended last season abruptly.

  • And, you know, we were in the middle of shooting 19,

  • which we finished with a sort of hybrid live action

  • and animated that we sort of finished up in the spring.

  • But, you know, we had three episodes

  • that were sort of our climax of the season.

  • -Yeah.

  • -That were already written.

  • And so they got rewritten to sort of work into, you know,

  • starting out Season 8 with.

  • But, you know, we're basically starting the season with,

  • you know, things are really dire right off the bat.

  • I mean, there's no sort of ramp-up like,

  • "Oh, we're starting out the season."

  • I mean, it really is -- -Comes in moving.

  • -You come in, really the train's already left the station.

  • -It's fantastic. You're great at it.

  • By the way, do you know that's over 150 episodes?

  • Is that what you've done? Something like that?

  • -Yeah. -Eight seasons?

  • It's unbelievable. [ Cheers and applause ]

  • Thank you, as someone who benefits off your ratings.

  • Thank you so much for doing "The Blacklist."

  • We love you, and I appreciate you coming into our studio

  • and just being a cool New Yorker.

  • -It's my pleasure. -James Spader.

  • I want to show a clip. I want to show a clip.

  • Here's James Spader in the season premiere

  • of "The Blacklist." Take a look.

  • -[ Chuckles ] Years ago, I was in a taxi on my way

  • to a rendezvous in Kowloon City.

  • This must have been around '98, '99?

  • They just closed Kai Tak Airport and everything was going in

  • and out of the big, brand-new Hong Kong International.

  • The place was gigundous,

  • largest passenger terminal in the world at the time.

  • I'd come in on a cargo flight.

  • And it was absolute madness over there.

  • My ground transport had gotten screwed up, so I grabbed a taxi.

  • I was running about an hour late and was a little out of sorts.

  • So I'm sure I put the driver on edge, although he seemed

  • pretty unflappable, and he had a hell of a heavy foot.

  • Anyway, we're doing our best.

  • Traffic is terrible.

  • The guy's bobbing and weaving,

  • and I'm trying to relax with one eye on the clock.

  • Meanwhile, Yearzy's been sitting at the Lucky Duck

  • for 45 minutes.

  • So, given his usual 15 minutes a drink, Yearzy's just finished

  • his third gin and tonic with a fourth on the way.

  • Now, I think the world and all of Yearzy,

  • but at his best, he's a bit stroppy.

  • And after four or five G and T's,

  • he's starting to look around for someone to mess with.

  • So I'm feeling a little...vulnerable.

  • -James Spader, everybody! [ Cheers and applause ]

  • Season 8 of "The Blacklist" premieres tomorrow

  • at 8:00 p.m. on NBC!

  • Jump right in. "The Blacklist."

-Welcome back, everybody. We are talking to our good pal
