  • OUR NEXT GUEST IS A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED

  • FRENCH SINGER-SONGWRITER, AND YOU KNOW HER FROM HER

  • HITS "TILTED" AND "GIRLFRIEND."

  • THE ALWAYS GLORIOUS CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS.

  • [APPLAUSE] >> James: CHRISTINE, IT

  • IS EVEN HAPPIER TO KNOW YOU'RE IN PARIS, WHICH I

  • CONSIDER THE HOME -- >> I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME

  • YOU TO MY HOME TOWN WITHOUT KNOWING YOU.

  • >> James: WE ARE SO HAPPY THAT YOU'RE HERE.

  • YOU'RE OVER IN PARIS.

  • AND DURING THIS PERIOD OF LOCKDOWN, HAVE YOU FOUND

  • YOURSELF CREATIVELY INSPIRED?

  • HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO WORK ON ANY NEW MUSIC DURING

  • THESE PAST FEW MONTHS?

  • >> WELL, YOU KNOW, RIGHTLY WRITESEGUNDO A COPING MECHANISM

  • FOR EVERYTHING THAT OVERWHELMS ME.

  • AND THOSE ARE MOMENTS WHEN YOU REFLECT A LOT ON MUSIC

  • AND WHY YOU DO IT.

  • I THINK THIS CHALLENGING TIME REMINDS EVERYBODY OF

  • THEIR VALUES AND WHAT THEY TRULY LOVE.

  • AND OF COURSE I WAS JUST REMINDING ME OF HOW MUCH I

  • MUSIC AND I NEED IT IN MY LIFE.

  • SO I'M IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING A RECORD, SO I

  • HAVE LOTS OF TIME TO OVERTHINK IT.

  • >> James: I THINK THE THIRD ALBUM IS THE MOST

  • PRESSURE FOR EVERY ARTIST.

  • THE THIRD ALBUM, IF YOU GET IT RIGHT, IT CEMENTS

  • YOU FOR A LONG TIME.

  • A LOT RIDES ON THAT THIRD ALBUM.

  • DO YOU FEEL ANY PRESSURE?

  • >> WELL, I'M ALWAYS AFRAID TO WRITE.

  • IT ALWAYS GETS ME INTO PLACES WHERE I'M AFRAID,

  • BECAUSE I HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH WRITE

  • TOGETHER IS (bleep).

  • I NEGOTIATE WITH MY FEELINGS.

  • AND ARTISTS TAKE RISKS ALL OF THEIR LIFE.

  • SO I LIKE TO BE SCARED, I THINK IT IS PROBABLY FINE.

  • IT IS TERRIFYING IN THE BEST, EXCITING WAY.

  • IT IS, LIKE, I DON'T KNOW WHERE I AM.

  • SO I TRY TO MAKE SENSE OUT OF IT, YOU KNOW.

  • >> James: ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN YOUR VIDEOS OR SEEN

  • YOU LIVE WILL KNOW THAT DANCING IS A BIG PART OF

  • YOUR PERFORMANCE.

  • WHERE DID YOU -- DID YOU -- THERE IT IS.

  • [LAUGHTER] >> DON'T STOP ME NOW.

  • >> James: AHH!

  • WERE YOU ALWAYS DANCING AS A KID?

  • [LAUGHTER] >> James: BECAUSE WHEN I

  • IMAGINE A YOUNG CHRISTINE WITHOUT THE QUEEN, I

  • IMAGINE A CHILD IS ALWAYS DANCING.

  • >> IT IS KIND OF LIKE WHAT YOU DID.

  • I DIDN'T FIND MY OUTFIT YET, BUT I HAD THE SAME

  • ENERGY.

  • I WAS STOMPING A LOT IN MY ROOM.

  • I TOOK CLASSICAL BALLET FOR A LONG TIME, BUT IT

  • WAS A BIT RESTRICTIVE AT SOME POINTS, AND IT WAS

  • REALLY HARSH ON A WOMAN'S BODY.

  • AND I WAS TOO TINY AND WEIRD TO CARRY ON.

  • SO I DID A BIT OF IMPROVISATION.

  • I HOPE NOBODY SAW ME DANCE IN MY ROOM WHEN I WAS

  • YOUNGER BECAUSE IT MIGHT MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE

  • TERRIFYING.

  • >> James: I THINK YOU WERE LAYING THE SEEDS FOR

  • THIS INCREDIBLE PERFORMER YOU ARE RIGHT NOW.

  • THE SONG YOU'RE GOING TO PERFORM ON THE SHOW IS

  • CALLED "PEOPLE, I'VE BEEN SAD."

  • AND I THINK IT IS INCREDIBLY RELATE TABLE RELATABL

  • LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE GOING THROUGH ANY LEVEL

  • OF SADNESS OR ANXIETY IN THEIR LIFE.

  • WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THIS SONG THAT MADE YOU WANT TO

  • KICK-START THE E.P. WITH IT?

  • >> WELL, YOU KNOW, IT'S WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS

  • WONDERFUL JOB OF MINE, THE SONG CAUGHT ME BY

  • SURPRISE.

  • ALMOST EVERY DAY I WRITE, AND IT'S LIKE FLEXING A

  • MUSCLE FOR ME, BUT THAT SONG CAUGHT ME BY

  • SURPRISE.

  • YOU REALLY FEEL YOUR GUT.

  • IT WAS A DIFFICULT MOMENT IN MY LIFE WHEN I WROTE

  • THAT SONG.

  • APRIL 20, 2019, AND I HAD JUST LOST MY MOM, AND I

  • WAS GOING THROUGH A REALLY ROUGH PATCH, AND I REALLY

  • THOUGHT I WAS COPING, YEAH, I'M JUST DOING

  • GREAT.

  • AND THEN I SAT ON THE BED, AND THE FIRST WORDS I

  • UTTERED WERE "IT'S TRUE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAD."

  • AND THEN YOU HAVE TO BE BRUTALLY HONEST, AND THE

  • SONG IS JUST DEMANDING IT.

  • I THINK IT IS REALLY HUMBLING BECAUSE IT IS NOT

  • EVEN -- IT COMMANDS HONESTY.

  • AND IT STARTED THE WHOLE PROCESS -- IT WAS

  • CATHARTIC FOR ME.

  • IT WAS TRYING TO ADDRESS PAIN, WHICH IS SOMETHING

  • THAT I DO.

  • >> James: WELL, I THINK THAT THE SONG IS

  • BEAUTIFUL.

  • AND YOUR PERFORMANCE, WHICH IS COMING UP AFTER

  • THE BREAK, IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WE'VE HAD

  • ON THE SHOW IN A LONG TIME.

  • THE SETTING IS STUNNING.

  • WHERE DID YOU SHOOT THIS?

  • >> I SHOT IT AT THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN PARIS.

  • AND, YOU KNOW, IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE I HAVE

  • BEEN CHOOSING ALMOST LIKE POSTCARD PLACES IN PARIS,

  • WEIGHING DOWN HISTORY.

  • AND IT WAS THE WEIGHT OF CULTURE.

  • I'M TRYING TO REVISIT THAT AND BE LIKE A BROKEN CLOWN

  • INSIDE OF IT.

  • I JUST WANTED THE POETRY OF THOSE STATUES TO BE

  • LIKE A WEIRD GHOST AMONG THEM.

  • I THINK IT IS WEIRD IN A GOOD WAY, AND IT CAN BE

  • SAD IN A DELICATE WAY.

  • >> James: IT IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

  • IT HAS BEEN A REAL THRILL TO SIT AND CHAT WITH YOU

  • STICK AROUND, CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS HAVE A

  • BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE COMING UP RIGHT AFTER

  • THIS.
