  • Joe Burrow was almost an afterthought.

  • 298th ranked player in the Class of 2015 a transferred quarterback playing for a team that is always one with defense.

  • By the end of the year, though, he was a household name, putting together the single greatest season I've ever seen by any quarterback.

  • Yes, good.

  • Hello, Quick History Lesson.

  • Borough transferred to L s U from Ohio State and was set to run an offense that fans have been complaining about for years under head coach Ed Orgeron in Burrows.

  • Words People thought it waas Stone Age, but plot twist.

  • Coco brought in passing game coordinator Joe Brady from the NFL and overhaul the entire offense under coordinator Steve Ensminger.

  • And when did Borough know that they were gonna be really stinking good?

  • First drive against Georgia Southern.

  • We're all throws over the top, and he's got a touchdown.

  • Jamaar Chase.

  • Not exactly a juggernaut opponent, but that drive ended in Joe's first touchdown pass of the year to Jamaar Chase.

  • Spoiler alert.

  • He catch 19 Mawr Golden tickets just by himself during the season.

  • Joe spread it out from the get go, though going full you get a touchdown and you get a touchdown and you get a touchdown.

  • Tap dancing to the tune of five touchdown tosses in that game alone.

  • But fine.

  • I hear you.

  • What about when he played against?

  • Well, an actual viable opponent didn't take long against Texas.

  • Joe went full superhero on third and 17th with an improbable touchdown pass to seal the win.

  • Then he showed some serious swagger to the Texas fans in one of his many displays off ice cold confidence.

  • Within days, the hype train was finally chug a lugging along two phrases I never thought I'd ever hear uttered in my lifetime Heisman Trophy candidate in L S U quarterback.

  • Give him credit.

  • I mean, he was throwing the ball on.

  • You look like an NFL quarterback out there.

  • Really proud of Joe More than method heika he reminded Vandy.

  • You don't have to be a Commodore to be good at math after throwing his fifth of six touchdowns against him.

  • But not everyone was convinced.

  • Who's your Heisman Trophy winner?

  • Jalen Borough to jump Joe Burrow?

  • We knew that everyone was gonna doubt it until they saw it against Florida, Auburn and Alabama the world had no choice but to believe.

  • After L S U ran through each of those teams, capped off by a hero's welcome for Borough in Baton Rouge.

  • When the Tiger's playing got back from Tuscaloosa, this is what snapping an eight game losing streak to Alabama looks like.

  • Sure, there were other incredible games, and we'll get to Senior Night against A and M in just a few.

  • But one of the remarkable things about this season was Burrows.

  • Consistent dominance before the college football playoff.

  • He'd already put up 4700 passing yards and 51 total touchdowns for the unbeaten Tigers, and Joe wasn't afraid to remind us all after the SEC championship that he knew it all along.

  • It might come to this price in the nation, but we've worked for this.

  • We knew how good we were the moment you know what I'm talking about.

  • The moment where a player becomes a rock star, where a quarterback becomes an icon in a season full of moments.

  • For Joe Burrow, it's hard to do.

  • But if you ask me, there is one moment that cemented Joe Burrow in the category of he will never have to buy his own drinks in Baton Rouge ever again.

  • Senior day.

  • All eyes on the now Heisman front runner who has taken the nation by storm.

  • Joe Burrow was a sensation, but is he came out of the tunnel.

  • Every cell phone of the adoring crowd focused on him.

  • He reminded the world that he is.

  • Ls use quarterback now and forever.

  • It was a small tweak to his jersey, but it made the biggest statement imaginable when he ran out with a nameplate.

  • That red borough, that's e a u X.

  • It spoke to his connection with Baton Rouge, with Louisiana with Cajun culture and with the L S U community that bonded with their quarterback in such a palpable way.

  • My gosh, when I saw the other day with him walking out with Borough on the back and his mom and dad right there, just It's incredible.

  • Yeah, he threw three touchdowns in the game.

  • Yes, he tied the single season SEC record of 44 touchdown tosses that night, a record he eventually trampled all over by 16.

  • Yes, he also broke the L S U record for single season passing yards and touchdowns in that same game.

  • But that jersey, the single most viral moment in sports that night was what Borough was asked about.

  • First post game.

  • Yeah, so it came to me kind of early in the week.

  • I went to our equipment.

  • Guys, see if we could get it done.

  • And I thought it would just be just being awesome.

  • Tribute to the state, to the to the university.

  • And no, I think it was great.

  • You go, Joe.

  • Yeah, I just did that.

  • You're welcome.

  • So let's be clear.

  • Joe Burrow won the Heisman because he just damn deserved some years.

  • The challengers air like jelly doughnuts.

  • Good, but nobody's first choice this year, Na the group of candidates was like judging Cake week on the Great British baking show Alabama's to untangle.

  • Below was the early favorite, with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence right on his heels.

  • Lawrence struggled early in the season, and his candidacy took a small hit.

  • But in the meantime, Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts vaulted into the top spot with some incredible numbers in the Sooners offense that it produced back to back Heisman winners.

  • If defense is more your speed, Ohio State's Chase Young was showing off a level of dominance that had analysts telling me he was better than either of the Boaster brothers, who had each been top three NFL draft picks.

  • Young's teammates, quarterback Justin Fields, ultimately beat out two and Trevor to be a finalist.

  • By the time the trophy was handed out, there wasn't any mystery.

  • Joe Burrow locked up the Heisman and locked up.

  • Probably a top five draft pick in the NFL.

  • You'd like to say that you won't be emotional, but, honestly, who knows?

  • This is kind of a dream come true, so we'll see.

  • It's gonna be surprised to me to Burrow.

  • Finished 1846 points clear of second place, the largest margin in Heisman Trophy history.

  • Again against a stacked class.

  • Need more records?

  • Five.

  • He finished with 93.8% of the possible votes.

  • The highest ever end got 90.7 of the first place votes.

  • The most ever.

  • End had his name on 95.5% off the ballots, Also a record.

  • That's not a Heisman win.

  • That's Heisman history and a complete but woman.

  • Also fun fact.

  • If you think these battles are best settled on the field.

  • By the time Joe Burrow was a national champion, he defeated to a Hurts and Lawrence each head to head along the way.

  • Dominance for to the victor go the spoils and holy cow.

  • Did Joe get his way?

  • Already told you about the Heisman Records, he said.

  • And maybe the coolest moment of the Heisman ceremony was watching the always level in cool borough break down and be so really, I fully expected to win it.

  • But when you get up on the stage and realize the moment in the magnitude of this trophy and all the people that have helped me through, my journey just started flowing through my mind.

  • And it was just overwhelming emotion.

  • He did what he always did.

  • Credited teammates, he brought Orgeron to tears, talking about how much cocoa meant to the borough family and in a moment, the truly captivated America.

  • He used his microphone platform and moment to speak about poverty in southeast Ohio, where he grew up.

  • Coming from from southeast Ohio.

  • It's it's a very, very impoverished area and the poverty rate is almost two times the the national averages.

  • There's so many people there that that don't have a lot on.

  • I'm up here for all those all those kids in Athens and Athens County that no go home toe.

  • Not a lot of food on the table hungry after school.

  • You guys could be up here, too.

  • His words directly led the half a million dollars worth of donations being made to the Athens County food pantry by the end of that month and nearly $1 million by July.

  • He didn't forget where he came from, spoke from the heart and changed lives.

  • Doing the Heisman wasn't the end of his glory from the season, though.

  • He threw 12 touchdowns in two playoff games, set to F B s records with 60 passing touchdowns and 65 touchdowns responsible for in lead L s u to their fourth national title.

  • He'd been dreaming of that since he was a kid.

  • Since I was 10 years old.

  • This is what I've always wanted to do, you know, I've said in the past, my goal was never toe be the quarterback of an NFL team.

  • I wanted to be the quarterback of a top 10 team playing in the national title game.

  • Despite that he'd go first overall in the NFL draft a few months later when the Cincinnati Bengals brought him home to Ohio.

  • This is a kid most recruiters didn't want.

  • Nebraska, where his two brothers played football, said he wasn't good enough.

  • They didn't offer me.

  • It's pretty simple.

  • I wanted to go there, Um, but they didn't offer me.

  • He didn't win the Ohio State job, and coming into the season, several mock drafts had him as 1/6 round pick.

  • Now he's a mythical figure who embraced Louisiana and was loved back so hard they'll surely build him a statue.

  • I'll personally never forget standing on the sidelines of several games, looking at some of the best analysts in the world, asking how to put this one season in context.

  • Theo Answer.

  • I got every single time I posed.

  • The question was the right one, best ever for one season.

  • Joe Burrow showed us what perfection can look like from the quarterback position, and we were all lucky to see it unfolding right in front of our eyes.
