  • Wow.

  • [M]: Picnic time in the park!!

  • [S]: When we first came to Japan we didn't know how amazing the bakeries would be here

  • [S]: I remember our first memory [M]: Oh right.

  • [S]: Of when we were in Ikebukuro many years ago

  • And we had that bakery right beside us

  • We had no idea what to expect because we didn't have great experiences of bakeries in Asia.

  • And we were just overwhelmed by how delicious it was.

  • And I realized so we didn't actually show the amazing things you can find in a bakery

  • We just picked up some stuff at our favorite like local bakery, basic things

  • Everything was between a dollar to like $2.50

  • It's nothing that's like ~fancy food~

  • [M]: Curry bread? So popular. [S]: Oh my gosh. [M]: Everywhere you go. It was actually one of the first snacks

  • We ever had in Japan when we moved here, I know

  • [S]: I just, my stomach is - I know we got to get B shots but - ohh look at this

  • Can you smell that sweet butter glaze on - Don't smack it at me girl!

  • Smell that What do you smell

  • I smell happiness and oil and savory.

  • [M]: Okay, let's break it in half slowly. [S]: Let's show you what's inside.

  • [S]: Let's show you what's inside.

  • [S]: Here you go girl. [M]: Did I get like the really good version

  • [S]: I don't know

  • [S]: I gave you the better part because I love you the most.

  • [M]: I see how this is.

  • There are all different flavors that we have

  • All over Japan and you know we got cheese ones and chicken ones and vegetable ones.

  • This is just a default curry bun

  • [S]: Oh my gosh [M]: I'm actually salivating, are you?

  • Here we go

  • [M]: Oh my god.

  • Mmm. This one tastes like Coco curry stuffed inside of a bun

  • The thing about Japanese curry is it's savory,

  • [S]: Yeah [M]:but it's also quite sweet.

  • [S]: Yeah. [M]: It has a lot of nutmeg and cinnamon

  • Oh my god.

  • The contrast in texture

  • Look how fluffy that bread is to the creamy sweet meatiness of Japanese curry

  • This is one of my favorite snacks I have in Japan

  • So this one is a beef curry bun

  • And they don't usually do like this chunky of a beef one. Oh my I've got carrots in mine. Oh my gosh

  • It's like a meal on the go

  • Look, I even have a caramelized onion

  • I think it's the stewed carrots and caramelized onions

  • that give it the sweetness as well

  • Right, because onions and carrots in Japan are quite sweet

  • The breakfast of champions had well after lunch almost into dinner

  • [M]: The dinner of breakfast and lunch of champions!!! [S]: The dinner of breakfast

  • Do not be afraid

  • Of curry buns when you come to Japan

  • You'll be sorely missing out if you don't try this

  • But be afraid of the giant crows with their giant muscle arms

  • that are slowly surrounding us

  • Come at me crow!

  • [M]: Simon gets beat up. [S]: I would.

  • Those - those crows are jacked up.

  • I also loved the little crusty crunch they have on top

  • because you have the creaminess of the inside, the fluffiness of the bread and then it's almost like a tempura crunch on top

  • [M]: Exactly what I was gonna say

  • If you're visiting and you're on a budget just have curry buns

  • [S]: Over and over again

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner

  • Just like curry bun! curry bun! curry bun!

  • [M]: I think that's it for the video. [S]: That's it. [M]: Bye everyone, I'm full, see ya.

  • Yeah

  • NAhh, I have many more exciting pastries to try.

  • Okay, what's next on the list

  • First up some milk because I'm thirsty

  • Oh, are you gonna be an adult and are you gonna be able to open it by yourself?

  • Is it childproof?

  • [S}: Look at that big doggy

  • [M]: It's a big doggy

  • [S]: I really hope we can get a doggy in this video

  • [M]: It's fine

  • [Martina grunts]

  • I opened it, like an adult.

  • Now what are you gonna drink there like an adult?

  • Could you get me a straw?

  • I want to let you know, Martina, my sweet ducky

  • Even though we've been married for 10 years

  • I still find you so endearing

  • And you melt my heart with your cuteness all the time

  • Not many people fumble with the carton as you do

  • Or, do you all fumble with your milk cartons?

  • I'm not sure

  • And if you, don't show Simon because he might think you're adorable

  • AND THEN I'LL HAVE TO KILL YOU.

  • Okay now this next one is definitely the memory that I have from Ikebukuro

  • Oh yes

  • So we were living in Korea, still

  • And we were just visiting Japan. The first thing we had was a quiche

  • and we were really worried that it was gonna be like super gross

  • and filled with like surprise objects like sweet potato and corn

  • And we would be like this isn't savory at all!

  • Turns out Japan really likes quiche culture

  • I was never into quiches in Korea, never into quiches in Canada,

  • But the way that Japan does quiches

  • It's so magnificent

  • I think what's different is that Japan is very heavily influenced by France

  • and Europe

  • So a lot of the food here is buttery and flaky and soft

  • Because it's more of a European influence

  • Let's just stop this conversation

  • Too many things are happening

  • Okay, let's break this open and show you what's inside

  • OHhhh Lordy

  • This is a three type of mushroom plus bacon quiche

  • The word bacon in Japan is used quite differently than I'm used to

  • Bacon is

  • This is rEAlly thick

  • That's a thick slab of meat

  • That's a big boy bacon, and that's the only thing on top the rest of it is filled with onions

  • I can see already onions

  • But just look at how moist that egg is [M]: Chantilly mushrooms. I know

  • It's not like a really hard, tough egg.

  • MoiST EgG

  • You feel the pastry do you feel how not dry this is?

  • You can see the flakes of the pastry on the outside

  • This is much better when you warm it up

  • but because we are sitting in a park,

  • the best I can do is this

  • [M]: It's warm. [S]: Okay here we go, let's do this

  • [M]: Oh man. [S]: Oh my god.

  • The mushrooms really steal the show here

  • Wow those are so juicy!

  • [M]: This is like an 80% mushroom quiche

  • It's a very juicy mushroomy mushroom

  • I think there's like button mushrooms in here

  • The chantilly mushrooms, and then another one from the looks of it

  • It's just a mouthful of mushrooms,

  • and there's actually no bacon on the inside.

  • [S]: No [M]: The bacon is solely on the top part, like wow

  • [S]: We're kind of false advertising by calling it a bacon quiche,

  • but I just had that piece of bacon. It's not crispy, but it's so

  • smoked, and salty

  • [M]: Where's - where's my bacon?

  • [S]: You didn't have your piece of bacon in there?

  • [M]: Where's my bacon?

  • [S]: Did you drop your bacon girl? [M]: No, I

  • [S]: Where did your bacon go?

  • [M]: Did you eat my bacon?

  • [S]: No, there are two slices of bacon

  • [M]: Did you eat my bacon?

  • [S]: I might have had your bacon

  • [M]: *gasp* You ate my bacon???

  • You just reached over and took my bacon?

  • [S]: No we split it in half!

  • We're gonna need to like rewind the footage to figure out what just happened

  • No, what just happened??

  • No, I had a piece of bacon on top of mine

  • I took it off to show everybody

  • [S]: Didn't you eat it after you showed it?

  • [S]: Did you put it back on it? [M]: No, I think I put it down

  • and I think you just picked it up and ate it

  • [S]: NO I did NOT, I did not, I did not eat your bacon

  • [M]: Quietly, people think we're fighting

  • [M]: You ate my bacon x2

  • [S]: I love you babe, I love you

  • [~love is the momennnnt~]

  • You're a bacon thief!

  • Where'd you put your bacon?

  • No, I think you ate my bacon

  • There's no conclusive evidence here

  • The jury is still out.

  • If only there was video evidence of Simon eating two pieces of bacon

  • Beyond the shadow of a reasonable doubt

  • There's no way you can say for sure for sure

  • Oh man

  • Oh my God

  • Viewers, remember this

  • Vengeance will be mine

  • Oh, yes, I will get my revenge on her

  • Point is, that was a bombastic quiche

  • Can you tell me about how delicious the quiche was, go

  • Simon ate my bacon

  • I'd like to report lost bacon.

  • It's about this big and quite thick.

  • Did you drop it down your shirt into your bountiful bosoms?

  • I'll check

  • Let me check for you.

  • Don't worry. I'm the Baconboob inspector

  • No, we need the revenue from YouTube!

  • This is a safe, happy video!

  • We can sing a nursery rhyme.

  • *sings songs* ~be yourself~

  • *sings Twinkle Twinkle Little Star*

  • [S]: Advertisers dont be scared~

  • [M]: Please stay with us nothing happened here

  • [S]; We're a wholesome married couple

  • What do you think is in this one?

  • It smells savory-er

  • Remember what it said?

  • But that's sugar on top isn't it?

  • That's sugar on top

  • No. I think this is sweet um

  • I don't know what it was

  • Oh, it could be something with pumpkin or cream or

  • I have no idea [S]: No idea

  • [M]: Let's just try it out [S]: All right

  • So this to me

  • looks like a sweet cheese-filled thing. [M]: Hello?

  • Is that cheese in there?

  • I don't know what this is.

  • [S]: This just looks, I don't even think there's anything here.

  • [M]: Let's stop investigating and let's take a bite

  • Wow, the outside is super

  • buttery and yummy like a pretzel meets croissant

  • Oh my god, this is amazing.

  • Is this filled with butter?

  • I think this is just a butter roll

  • See, Martina and I have different opinions on this

  • she loves croissants

  • I don't really like the outside of croissants.

  • I like the inside though.

  • This is filled with a piece of butter

  • I thought this was cheese on the inside, but it's actually just - [S]: Just butter

  • [M]: They're like what should we put inside this bun?

  • And someone's like

  • I don't know... butter?

  • This is not a croissant as well, by the way

  • How dare you, fine sir

  • It's like a croissant roll

  • But the bread tastes more like

  • Like savory baguette bread

  • I mean I'd like to finish this, but we have more to go

  • So I'm just gonna roll mine up and keep it.

  • I think it's time for us to do a dedicated sweet dessert.

  • Oh man I just got the nub filled with all the butter!

  • You missed out

  • Did I?

  • That end nub?

  • Was just like

  • A tablespoon of salted butter,

  • lovingly placed inside the tube

  • where it gathered with a delicious crunch

  • [M]: You missed out [S]: I did

  • For our next one we have

  • CASUTADO, or custard

  • and there's a little description here just in case you didn't know

  • "This taste warms the cockles of the heart."

  • What's a cockle?

  • Isn't a cockle something you find on a clam?

  • I would imagine you give this to somebody

  • who's like really bitchy

  • You'd be like, "Here. I'll warm up your

  • Heart Cockles."

  • Warm your heart cockles you -

  • *sing wholesome songs*

  • I see this custard hole right there

  • I mean, this is surprising to me

  • because it looks like a whole wheat bun

  • It feels a little rice floury to me

  • Oh my gosh

  • Look at those vanilla beans in there.

  • Wow I did not see that coming

  • [M]: I did not expect this

  • [S]: I know, like to actually see the vanilla bean flecks in here

  • [M]: Yeah. [S]: They're called flecks right?

  • [S]: Speckles? Sparkles? Yeah flecks

  • [M]: Go flex *both sing*

  • [S]: No we can't sing that

  • [M]: Time for vanilla creamed buns

  • We were singing a totally not

  • inappropriate song

  • This looks like real good custard here.

  • I definitely think that this is right side.

  • This is a lot like spongier? [M]: Fluffier, yeah?

  • But it's not as aerated as the other ones

  • Oh, you're just going for it girl, damn!

  • Go on.

  • Japan does custard really well.

  • That's some good custard boy

  • I don't think the bread matches it whatsoever

  • This bread tastes way too healthy.

  • [S]: It does. [M]: It's got like a whole wheat

  • I think it's trying to trick yourself into like

  • justifying eating this much custard.

  • Custard things in Japan, they use really

  • Intensely creamy custard that is not overly sweet.

  • Japan does custard right

  • If you see those little puddings in a convenient store,

  • GET THAT STUFF

  • That is satisfying

  • Did not like the bread around that, but wow

  • I didn't like the bread.

  • But just rip it open, watch the custard spread

  • and dig into the custard by yourself

  • Oh my gosh

  • Oh this is so good.

  • Can I just say I love my life. I love my job.

  • I mean I'm here in Kichijoji,

  • having great baked goods and my beautiful wife to the left of me

  • this is

  • Have I died? I might have died? I'm not sure if this

  • It's all gone whoa-oh

  • oh-oh, there's more!

  • What a happy little doggy

  • there's a tiniest little wiener dog

  • he's not walking like this, he's walking like this

  • He's gonna come into the video. We have to spread out

  • Go to the right go to left, ducky so everyone can see it

  • What a cute doggy

  • That's a beautiful dog

  • [S]: Hello!

  • [M]: Kawaii!

  • Hello!

  • [Lady]: He's old.

  • [S]: Oh, he's old?

  • [Lady]: 14 years old.

  • [S]: 14 - my dog also, he's 14, yeah

  • [Lady]: What kind of dog? [S]: Pekingese

  • [Lady]: Oh, Pekingese.

  • [M]: This is him.

  • [M]: And my cat.

  • [S]: Hello.

  • [M]: Hi! [S]: What's -

  • [S]: Chan-mei?

  • [M]: Oh, Chan-mei?

  • [Lady]: Chan-mei Chan-mei.

  • [S]: Chan-mei.

  • [M]: Chan-mei.

  • [M]: Very nice to meet you. [S]: Nice to meet you.

  • What were we doing again?

  • Yeah, we were eating oh, we were eating

  • We just played with a dog

  • now, we're gonna eat, uhh

  • It's supposed to be a cat

  • *laughs*

  • I mean, it's supposed to be cat bread [S]: Who hurt you?

  • I don't know why there's cat bread for sale

  • It's said it's Kichijoji like, the area's special?

  • so I don't know

  • because we have cat cafes and they're building that new one also

  • that looks like a Ghibli movie like I think this is why

  • This is pretty

  • terrifying looking

  • Okay, so I say let's break his face open and see what's inside

  • Look

  • I'm a cat bread

  • Also I want to let you know that the longer we spend here,

  • the colder is getting cause

  • the sun's setting and my nipples

  • are just getting more and more erect.

  • Well, you are a nasty woman.

  • I am a nasty woman

  • [M]: So nasty [S]: Nasty woman

  • Okay here we go

  • [M]: No, Mr. Kitty, nooo

  • Oh gosh we just killed him.

  • It's terrifying.

  • [S]: What is this? chocolate beans?

  • [M]: Chocolate or beans? We'll find out

  • [S]: So this is definitely that same kind of like, rice dough

  • It's a lot denser bubbles and really like fluffy.

  • I still prefer like traditional flour as opposed to rice flour.

  • [M] So this is one of those things where we're like "Is it chocolate?"

  • "Or is it beans?"

  • [S]: We can't tell

  • [M]: Who knows? [S]: Here we go

  • [S]: That's chocolate pudding. [M]: Oh man.

  • That is chocolate pudding.

  • Woahh

  • This is the first time I had pudding in bread!

  • I had bread pudding, but this is pudding in bread!

  • Whoa

  • This steals the show

  • I was gonna be like, "This is gonna be the worst one of all."

  • I was ready for this to suck

  • Oh my god. Oh my god

  • I don't like chocolate flavored things, as you know

  • But I thought this is gonna be like chocolate flavored cream

  • This was like pudding, like chocolate pudding,

  • like a lava cake

  • [S]: Yes [M]: This tastes like a lava cake

  • We didn't eat the ears

  • I took a bite of it, didn't really like it

  • Hold this for me

  • See

  • Little kitty ears

  • *gasp*

  • I trusted you

  • You shouldn't have.

  • You should have learned by now, what are you doing?

  • What's wrong with you?

  • Are you trying to confess that you ate my bacon?

  • No, I'm not

  • What I want to confess is this

  • A lot of these things that we order today

  • We had no idea what they were, and we just bought them

  • We tried them out, and we had a wonderful experience

  • So if you're worried about the things you're gonna eat.

  • Just try it out

  • [M]: Yep. [S]: Who knows? It might be amazing it might not be amazing

  • Either way you're gonna

  • have a fun story to tell

  • Hopefully we've inspired you to try out the fun and interesting things in Japanese bakeries

  • I also think that when you come to Japan

  • and you're exploring and you're on a bit of a budget

  • You don't have to go to like high-end restaurants.

  • You can just pop into different bakeries

  • Yep, if you're here for a week, every day

  • you could have a different bakery and a different baked good,

  • but it's a nice way to get to know Japanese bakery culture

  • uh-huh I mean Wow

  • Hopefully next time, we'll be able to take you to my favorite bakery in Japan,

  • Patisserie, it's amazing.

  • But for now, I hope you enjoyed this video

  • Let us know in the comments section below what your favorite baked good is

  • and if you have come to Japan,

  • Let us know what you tried

  • Oh, because the dog party's over there!

  • Remember we did a dog party video. It's right there. It's right

  • Let's go find the dogs. I'm so happy. I'm happy too
