  • hey guys we're samuel and audrey and this week we're taking you on a little

  • road trip to nova scotia canada if you're new to the channel hello and

  • welcome we normally bring you on our travels around the globe but this year

  • has been a little bit different so we've been exploring our home country of

  • canada in this episode we'll share another

  • unique stay with you this time in a converted church

  • we'll try the biggest donaire in nova scotia we'll come face to face with a

  • mastodon we'll take you to the halfway point

  • between the north pole and the equator and we'll also visit the bay of fundy

  • which is home to the highest tides in the world

  • so let's kick off this road trip

  • well well guys hello we made it welcome to stewiacke this is

  • probably the randomest place we've ever chosen to

  • stay basically we chose this place because we

  • were looking for unusual properties on airbnb

  • and we found a church a blue church that's been converted into this

  • lovely home yeah we just thought that's something we'd enjoy

  • check it out it's also strategically located not far from halifax

  • yeah which we're a destination we're going to be in a couple of days

  • and another thing that caught our attention about stewiacke is that

  • it's exactly the middle point between the north pole and the equator

  • right here in nova scotia

  • why not but enough chit-chatting let's take you inside the church shall we

  • all right guys so this summer we have been on a quest to find

  • the strangest most unusual most amazing airbnbs possible and i think this one

  • takes the cake this is my number one we are going to be

  • spending the night in a church a converted church here in

  • stewiacke so let's come on in so i can show you

  • what this place is like

  • this is crazy so like i said we found this

  • listing on airbnb so far we've stayed in tree houses suspended tree tents

  • we've done log cabins we've done off-grid cabins

  • and then this place caught our attention a blue church a former anglican church

  • that's been turned into this lovely place where people can stay up to

  • four guests so as soon as you walk into the church

  • the first thing you have is the bedroom king-size

  • bed it looks so comfy oh digging up after that long drive huh oh

  • it was a long drive guys we've been driving all day to get

  • here to nova scotia and yeah stained glass windows we have

  • stained glass windows and i really like what they've done

  • so they've installed some lighting behind the glass and you can play around

  • with it a bit change the colors and it just illuminates the stained

  • glass and makes it more vivid oh i didn't know you could change the colors

  • yeah whoa well i'd imagine i mean look at all yeah there's a color grid

  • that's so cool every color under the rainbow indeed

  • so yeah that's pretty cool there's lots of artwork here

  • yeah really like that painting of the bowl there's a

  • lovely book collection i mean if you're gonna be staying here for a few days

  • there are some great reads over there and yeah just lots of nice little

  • details like bits of art everywhere fresh flowers beautiful lamps something

  • to catch your eye all the time yes indeed and now a quick

  • break for today's sponsor

  • so a big thank you today to the video sponsor which

  • is surf shark and for those of you who don't know surf shark is an app and

  • browser extension that basically lets you place your laptop or phone anywhere

  • in the world and lets you access the internet as if you were in that country

  • this lets you access and unblock websites and content that you may not

  • usually be able to see and it also adds an extra layer of

  • security when you're online to keep all of your

  • passwords photos and videos safe so the first time that sam and i tried using a

  • vpn is when we were traveling in china together

  • back in 2013 because we got there and realized we couldn't open our gmails

  • or use any of our social networks so that came in really handy and over the

  • years we've continued using vpns as we travel

  • as an example last year in 2019 we spent six months in

  • argentina chile and uruguay and one of the ways that i used a vpn

  • was to access tv shows which aren't available in all of those countries

  • another way you can use a vpn as a traveler is to get

  • really good deals on flights and i know that most of us

  • aren't flying anywhere right now with this whole pandemic but you can also get

  • it to find good deals on hotels and car rentals so if you are planning

  • any road trips in your home country you may want to try using a vpn to see if

  • the price is actually lower when you're browsing from another country so if you

  • guys want to try using a vpn we do have a code for you it is samuel

  • and audrey we'll have it here on the screen also in the description

  • box and that will give you 85 off and three months for free also surf

  • shark offers a 30 day money back guarantee so you can

  • test it out see how you like it and make your own

  • decision so thanks again to surf shark for

  • sponsoring this video and now let's get back to it so then

  • that brings us to the living area sam had a lovely little nap

  • over here on this couch how are you feeling well

  • better sam was my navigator today he used a lot of brain power to get us here

  • right i woke up i woke up early this morning

  • that's why that's why yeah so we have two big comfy

  • couches big screen tv oh it's gonna be awesome

  • just play off nhl hockey right now oh exciting stuff yeah um you can also

  • play music there's a really good sound system a wood burning stove

  • my favorite feature we are going to be putting that on tonight irregardless of

  • how cool it gets it's summer yeah even our host recommended we try it so

  • there's one of those yes there is and then we have

  • the kitchen a beautiful kitchen i wish i were planning to actually do some

  • cooking while we're here but we're not we're gonna go try the

  • biggest donaire in all of nova scotia on frank's

  • pizza frank's pizza right frank's pizza guys

  • oh let me show you something really cool that i noticed

  • this would be the baptismal font an antique look at that am i supposed to be

  • able to open this well if so you're going to need to do it

  • you're going to need to be oh wow you did look at that i can help

  • you with that no no no no no no no this weighs a ton

  • anyways this is where they would have the holy

  • water to baptize children just children maybe bathroom nc

  • bathroom the bathroom well forgets the bathroom

  • first of all washer and dryer combo this would be great if it were

  • like a random stop in the middle of your nova scotia trip and you need to do

  • laundry this would be the place but yeah nice

  • shower it's quite a big shower actually we have our toilet nice spacious

  • sink big mirror lots of towels it's a shame that we only have one night

  • here and then we are continuing onwards to halifax

  • but we're going to try and make the most of our time here in stewiacke

  • have a nice meal tonight going to do a bit of sightseeing tomorrow morning

  • visit mastodon ridge so yeah i'm feeling pumped pumped yeah yeah

  • hope you enjoyed the tour well hello we have not

  • seen much of you so far we haven't so we're pre-setting the table

  • because when we grab the donaire we're going to bring it back here

  • and we want it to stay nice and warm so we're trying to get everything uh set up

  • here at home before we bring it back mm-hmm biggest donaire

  • when's the last time you ate a donair it's been a while i mean obviously it

  • would have been probably been frederickton

  • um sometimes i go for a late night walks where i claim to be exercising

  • and uh pizza slices and donaires have been consumed in the past

  • i see okay exercising the truth comes out

  • we then walked over to frank's pizza which is known to have the biggest

  • donaire in all of nova scotia canada wow that's so cool

  • i guess we're trying a donaire okay this is called

  • the oka donaire the biggest donaire in all of nova scotia

  • it's so big that it's after the super extra large or something like that

  • then it's the oka and it's actually so big that i can't wrap it with my hand

  • i'm just gonna have to attack it like look at this if i just actually grab it

  • like that oh man it's just loaded like i i'm not sure because we haven't

  • dug in but like i feel like this could feed

  • like four to six people yeah we put it in a casserole dish and we're just gonna

  • serve ourselves so here's a donair meat guys

  • we paid extra to get cheese look at the cheese lots of cheese

  • there's the special sauce we've got tomato

  • we've got onion a lot of things going on so

  • i'm just gonna hack away here first bite

  • it's amazing i just love the donair me something unique about the way they do

  • it here in nova scotia in the maritimes it's got a bit of a sweet glaze on it

  • we've got our work cut out to finish sm trying dad's old fashioned root beer

  • in a fancy little mug here with ice cubes

  • better than normal root beer this is great it's an

  • awesome meal i've eaten a lot of donairs like in germany especially i feel like

  • this is really popular street food in berlin yeah um but the

  • difference about the donaires here in canada

  • is that they're sweet yeah like i almost taste like a honey glaze on the meat

  • and the cream sauce is also sweet i'm used to it being more like a

  • yogurt yeah so yeah it's it's very different it's not something i'm used to

  • but i do enjoy the cheesiness i'm sure we're going to be eating quite

  • a few donaires while we're in halifax oh yeah the official food of halifax

  • oh yeah yeah i still don't understand why it's not lobster

  • that should be lobster

  • what's this vintage hockey game i watch this as a kid my favorite team the

  • blackhawks playing against the colorado avalanche

  • the roenik sacacara belfor forsberg and i don't i can't i can't

  • remember who's gonna win because the last game

  • was the hawks i don't sure who's gonna win this one i actually forget

  • check it out hd baby

  • oh savard was even playing he almost scored

  • i hope ronix scores this is all gibberish to me

  • but yeah sam likes his sports as you can see

  • after a meal like that we needed to go for a walk so we ended up at the dennis

  • park trail which is only a half kilometer loop but hey

  • we made the most of it

  • uh

  • well good morning purple we have breakfast got some oatmeal i

  • made breakfast today it's actually more like fruit with

  • a side of oatmeal and buried underneath there's an oatmeal treasure at the

  • bottom yes there is a dig for it in there oh yeah we have

  • some banana green apple plum and i made

  • apple cinnamon oatmeal and maple syrup oatmeal brown sugar my favorite

  • it's all breakfast how did you sleep in a church

  • oh my gosh what's up so well such a comfortable bed

  • pillows galore which i absolutely loved it's a very peaceful little town here

  • so i just had the best sleep we had a busy day yesterday so i was really tired

  • yeah i was tired from driving so the plan for this morning

  • once we've had our breakfast is to visit mastodon ridge yeah i'm looking forward

  • to a little excursion yesterday i was just getting here and

  • now the uh the attractions the adventures the both

  • travel and food begin

  • we couldn't leave town without seeing what mastodon ridge was all about

  • our visit was short but here's a taste of what to expect

  • alright guys this morning we are visiting a very

  • quirky attraction here in stewiacke we have come to

  • mastodon ridge we're gonna be seeing the mastodon later

  • right now you can meet my friend the polar bear

  • and this is kind of like a small theme park where you can come and play mini

  • golf there's ice cream there are also markers

  • saying that this is the middle point between the north pole

  • and the equator line and yeah i think it's more for like

  • children you know young families but we thought it just sounded like

  • so quirky that we had to stop by just for a quick visit

  • it's great for some photos i mean for some photos i mean

  • when else are you gonna be in the middle point between the north pole and the

  • equator you gotta come here and snap a photo if you're already in

  • nova scotia canada and also i learned a little bit of a fun

  • fact i was wondering what's the difference between a mastodon

  • and a woolly mammoth like they both kind of look like prehistoric elephants

  • and apparently the mastodon lived during the

  • interglacial periods when the climate was a bit warmer and the woolly mammoth

  • favored the colder glacial periods that is the difference between the two

  • and now we're gonna go walk around and just snap some fun silly photos

  • well guys time for an update so we're back in the car

  • back in the car and we're just doing random attractions nearby we saw that

  • there was a lighthouse and it's like exit 10. let's take it we

  • took it we've got all the time in the world we don't have to be in halifax for

  • several more hours so we are kind of making our way to halifax slowly

  • and whenever there's an attraction we're gonna basically check it out

  • so we're heading towards the lighthouse hopefully it's nearby we have no

  • idea and uh we've also applauded a place to potentially go for a trek as well a

  • little hike in the woods so um yeah we're excited and uh just kind of

  • spontaneous travel is exactly what we love so

  • cool

  • well is this what you were expecting what a surprise i mean i feel shocked

  • because i didn't realize how close we were to

  • the bay of fundy i thought we were considerably further away and it just

  • turns out a short little detour and we're

  • we're right down here yeah it's just an amazing view i mean obviously the tide's

  • out and um i'd love to actually walk down

  • there it's like red sticky clay yeah it reminds me so

  • much actually of um the hopewell rocks in new brunswick oh

  • yeah yeah thank you fun day it's amazing and um

  • just love the the christmas in the air the salty feel

  • it's just a lovely place to be

  • so guys speaking of the highest tides in the world

  • right now low tide down there pan up the beach

  • all the way over here still wet ooh muddy don't step on that but look at

  • that look at how far the water comes up during high tide

  • versus low tide like that's crazy that's that's like 100 meters

  • our unplanned road trip took us to a few random spots including burn coat head

  • park which is home to the highest tides in the

  • world here on the bay of fundy 160 billion tons of water flow daily

  • into the basin and the average tide here is about 47.5

  • feet my one tip for anyone thinking and visiting is to come during low tide so

  • that you can walk on the ocean floor

  • do

  • blue whoa that is close close close my god too close for comfort too

  • close for comfort well it is time to wrap up this video this

  • little tiny house getaway church getaway yeah in nova scotia yeah it is over um i

  • loved how we spend the afternoon yes we went to summer that

  • reminded us of the hopewell rocks in new brunswick

  • yes what did you think of there that was so cool

  • the highest tides in the whole world that's crazy like what yeah i know what

  • i know it's so cool and like the tide was starting to come in so they were

  • like guys don't go too far you need to come back yeah that was

  • around 2pm um so i guess that would be one tip for anyone

  • visiting the bay of fundy look at the tide times like the

  • timetables they have to see when it's high tide low tide

  • you can also go tidal bore rafting around here

  • a unique sport to the bay of fundy yeah talk about it

  • i know we saw we saw some teams assembling yeah so they're

  • probably probably going to be going out in the afternoon and then to finish

  • things off with a classic maritime meal yes just love that fish chowder oh yes

  • we've got to find your recipe for that that's the best fish chowder i've had

  • so far in the maritimes great little pub i'm just looking over it's called

  • snappers bar and grill highly recommend it

  • and we're in the town of can can to cook can it cook

  • can it cook guys can it cook yeah we didn't even really know we were we're

  • just like just random stock total random stop on

  • the way to halifax now and just overall a really good

  • introduction to nova scotia canada and we can't wait to see more of the province

  • yeah to see what else we get up to yeah and stay tuned for the next videos

  • because we're going to be filming a things to do in halifax guide going back

  • to our roots making more city guides for you

  • and we're also going to be showing you where to eat and what to eat in halifax

  • so all of that coming very soon stay tuned for that thanks for watching

  • thanks guys

  • so

  • you
