  • -Pancakes pancakes pancakes ... -Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes ...

  • -Wait, are we saying penguin or pancakes? -Pancakes

  • You might have seen our video on the most perfect pancake in Japan.

  • -Wow! -This is one of the best smells!

  • -Wow, so you thought we were kidding when I said these are big pancakes ... this is like a cake. -This is one of the best smells!

  • So you thought we were kidding when I said these are big pancakes ... this is like a cake.

  • But it wasn't those magical souffle pancakes that you see a lot online and on Instagram.

  • Those are the pancakes that Japan is known for

  • Those are those like puffy pillowy, unbelievably brand-new dessert that you've never put in your mouth before.

  • -But we just had some friends leave Japan and one of their biggest regrets is not trying out these pancakes. -Yep.

  • So we're gonna show you today, we're doing this in their honor.

  • -Let us show you what these pancakes are all about. -Come on guys, we're going up!

  • Be warned:

  • It's usually very busy at these pancake shops, we went upstairs and we wrote down our name on the list and we know we're gonna be waiting a long time.

  • So there's lots of things we can do in between such as shopping at the cat store cats cats cats cats cats

  • You can even play hide-and-seek! you go hide! (Martina: okay)

  • one, Mississippi two, Mississippi three, Mississippi four Mississippi

  • I'm not actually gonna look for her. I'm just gonna go day-drink.

  • (sobs) I just want pancakes.. (Simon: Why am I waiting so long?) (sobs)

  • Is it time for pancakes yet? how long has it been? (Simon: it's been five minutes) what...

  • People beside us are eating really nice smelling meatballs

  • M: the first video we ever made we came to Japan is being eaten beside us, and it's torture oh

  • Oh my god it smells so good

  • Are you trying to be like a duck that just gets like scraps of food like when they toss it to the ground?

  • This is this is cruel and unusual no really it shouldn't be allowed to eat in here

  • You could just play around on your phone and ignore your friends, but you probably do that all the time

  • Anyways, don't you? Don't you? Yes you do. Put down your phone, stop being antisocial.

  • Oh hi, ducky (Simon: Oh hey girl) You want to have an 80s dance battle and an 80s dance hallway. (Simon: Let's do it.) Yep

  • At this point you might be wondering I thought I clicked on a video about pancakes

  • I mean it says pancakes on the thumbnail and you definitely showed some pancakes near the beginning

  • I mean gosh your title even says that these are really good pancakes yet here

  • We are three minutes into the video no pancakes. Just uh..

  • Two awkward white people dancing, but don't worry after this narration stops

  • We're gonna get straight to the pancakes

  • But first we have two important questions. One: Why do kittens purr and number two:

  • We're finally here

  • And we have put in our orders

  • But the wait is not over because every pancake takes 20 to 30 minutes to make because the Japanese soufflé pancake

  • Is not really a pancake

  • not truly

  • It's more an art form with its gentle whipping and meringue like texture

  • It's lovingly placed on a griddle and made to order

  • Simon: I got the Framboise white 'mouse' pancake

  • Martina: Oh my god, Simon

  • You can't even say straight because you know it's so bad. I know that some people like to make fun of my Korean or Japanese pronunciation,

  • but I love mispronouncing french words. Oh my god. It's just the best (Martina: Yeap.)

  • So I ordered the original pancake and it comes with honey on top

  • That's actually from New Zealand and it's made with Hokkaido butter that's been fermented. I don't even know what that means yeah

  • This is a lot faster than I expected

  • The cameras! Quickly take out the cameras!

  • [sexy food porn music]

  • (sexy voice): I like the way you.. are so (inaudible) and soft!

  • (sexy voice): Oh my! Is that cream melting all over your body?

  • (Martina in sexy voice): Oooh! Look at that--

  • What? What's wrong with you guys

  • What? You thought Simon did the voices? Oh, no. (Simon: Go back to being pervy)

  • (sexy voice is back): I like the way you shake! (grunts)

  • Yeah, jiggle that!

  • Mmm thiccc pancake!

  • Simon: oh

  • I've waited so long.

  • (sexy voice): I waited so long too, baby

  • Simon: Woman, you keep testing my patience

  • (sexy voice): I like the way you're covered in dried strawberries kinky

  • Ooh, do the sauce

  • Look at this

  • big magical

  • What? What is it? (Simon: We-- I have to eat. I have to eat. okay?) Alright.

  • [sexy food music]

  • Get that drizz on my nizzle (?)

  • It's just a little bit of shizzle

  • The wait is finally over. The whole point of this video

  • is finally here. Everything before hands just a distraction

  • And now-- what are you looking for? (M: Can you pass me a knife? you're really stressing me out I just want to start eating okay?)

  • M: see ya! (S: see ya!) Keep talking! (S: Here we go) Both: oh my god...

  • You don't even need a knife for this these are so delicate you have to be really careful when you move them around

  • It's like an airy marshmallow without any of the gumminess. It's like a cotton candy marshmallow

  • M: It's like a scone and a pancake

  • Got together and made like a love baby flower. It's like cheese. It's like vanilla. It's like pudding

  • How was it so soft and moist?

  • and fluffy at the same time you should only have two of those, but you have all three

  • I need to see this on the Great British Bake Off is what I need to see (M: Yes, I need to see it.)

  • M: I need to learn how to make this

  • (Dan eating)

  • M: Right?

  • Dan, is that a pancake? It's not, right? It's like its own special--

  • Dan: It's a fluffy like, cloudy pastry

  • I don't think it's a solid, but it's not a liquid. M: I know. see?

  • M: Dan understands. See? We're not crazy.

  • S: This is one of those like non-Newtonian states in which it's not a liquid

  • It's not a solid. It's between. S: It's--

  • M: And every bite will taste a different flavor like suddenly it'll be savory

  • And you'll be like there's like a cheesy taste to it and then sometimes you're like

  • Oh, it's sweet actually and the honey is like golden and caramel. I know isn't this wild

  • "the Framboise in the mouth" (mispronouncing french)

  • You are the worst sir.

  • It's the first time we had these pancakes on we had no idea of what we were experiencing and we literally

  • Ate so fast our eyes were just on the plate until we finished one and a half pancakes and we realized

  • Hey, we got to slow down

  • Because we look like barbarians and animals right here, not like we look like-- Girl I can just eat yours.. M: I mean keep going

  • I'm listening to your story. I haven't tried your honey one yet. M: No, how did this backfire on me? He even got a bigger piece than I did. That's not fair.

  • S: Whoa~ M: Isn't that great? I know!

  • the raspberries on the sauce heart tart tart

  • This isn't like a syrupy kids sauce that you know the pink ones that scored out on Sundays

  • And you're just like its obnoxiously sugary

  • This is a beautifully balanced tart and sweet and a little bit sour raspberry sauce

  • S: I'm not sure if there's any equivalents that I could think of of my experiences of food in North America. This is just--

  • It's something else. It's not a pancake if you've had a pancake you haven't had this- M: it's a pillow

  • It should be called a pillow.

  • S: I could sleep on this.

  • I think we should make a new dessert, everyone agrees; sundaes,

  • There's ice cream, pancakes, pies, and this is a pillow.

  • S: How is this so fluffy, love? You read about it

  • I'm afraid to tell anybody anything because Simon might be distracting me and then try to eat all my food

  • Essentially they made like a meringue, which means that they aerate it really really wildly and so much

  • This is my barrier, by the way. If you can't tell why I'm doing this

  • I'm kinda-- just make sure Simon doesn't-- S: My fork's full. You think I got like a second fork? M: He's sneaky, you know?

  • He had that long Fork before, in Korea

  • They make basically like a meringue out of the batter, and then when they cook it,

  • they cook it slowly which is why it takes 20 minutes

  • The result is beautifully airy perfectly cooked almost like a meringue, but not.

  • Huh! How many pancakes do I have? Two!

  • Everything's fine

  • (inaudible) through everyone's jars, like a bear (laughs)

  • (laughs) like, "Who's got the honey?"

  • Okay, I'm done.

  • (laughs) I can't now (laughs)

  • No.. no...

  • It's my last bite, Simon. Nooo.. You wouldn't dare S: You can do this

  • M: Gawi bawi bo (rock paper scissors). Ready, ready, ready? Ready? 1, 2, 3!

  • (martina lost) M: No! S: I did! 1, 2, 3, I did it! I did it right! M: Do it again! Best two out of three. Ready?

  • M: Yes! Ready? Both: 1, 2, 3

  • (martina wins one out of three) M: I won! S: One! You got one out of three! (both laugh) It's only one!

  • I won the first one! M: It was mine to begin with!

  • S: Why do you make these rules and then break them? You animal. You're an animal.

  • As you can tell we really dislike this place (reverse psychology. we understand, Martina.)

  • This is the worse, it's awful. I hate pancakes. I didn't like any way this at all. I didn't enjoy anything about this

  • I'm saying that so that maybe you'll avoid this chain and that it'll be a shorter lineup

  • And I won't have to wait so long next time I come here

  • Thank you so much to Skillshare for sponsoring this video

  • Can we learn how to do better dance battles next time that was super lame what we just did outside?

  • Maybe they have like an 80s dance course because it didn't go very well last time.

  • S: Do they have 80s dance course?

  • We should probably check that out

  • (If you) come to Tokyo you should

  • Definitely look for a soufflé pancake shop this particular one is just the one that we love to go to but there's actually a whole

  • Bunch of different chains, I don't know if they'll be as good as this one

  • But guys, please share pictures with us if you go.

  • We can remember them through you. why does Simon keep S: trying to see how deep I to look into your ear

  • I never actually tried. What's the furthest M: okay.
