  • Hi there ! I'm going to talk in this video

  • about " Modal Verbs " . OK

  • The modal verbs

  • are a set of very irregular verbs in English, OK .

  • The common modal verbs are : CAN , COULD , MUST , MAY , MIGHT , OUGHT TO ,

  • SHALL , SHOULD , WILL ,

  • and WOULD .

  • Also that there are others

  • that can be either modal or normal ,

  • for example

  • need or dare OK , now ,

  • what is a modal verb ?

  • how is a modal verb different

  • from an auxiliary verb .

  • OK , an auxiliary verb

  • defines tense

  • It defines past ,

  • present or future .

  • But a modal verb modifies

  • ( modal ) , modify.

  • It modifies the meaning of the verb

  • so for example Can gives

  • ability to the verb .

  • May gives

  • possibility to the verb .

  • Must gives obligation

  • Ought to or Should gives obligation but the different type

  • Will talks about habit in the present

  • and Would talks about habit in the past .

  • OK modal verbs do not

  • act like normal verbs ,

  • for example : " Can " .

  • to talk about Can in the future you can't say : " I will can " .

  • OK , so this gives us problems .

  • The infinitives of the modal verbs do not

  • exist .

  • to Must , no , to have to . Yeah

  • Can , to Can , no , to be able to . OK .

  • This is part of the problem of the irregularity of modal verbs .

  • to use the modal verbs

  • normally we just put a subject

  • our modal verb

  • and the infinitive of the verb without to .

  • for example : " I Must go " .

  • To make negatives of modal verbs

  • normally we just add " not " after the modal verb

  • and

  • modal verbs

  • almost always

  • have contractions in the negative

  • so can , can´t could , couldn´t

  • may

  • I've read mayn't

  • but I don't like it I'd prefer may not . Might , mightn´t ,

  • must , mustn´t , ought , oughtn´t

  • shall , shan´t yeah ,

  • I'm not sure that's good english but

  • a lot of people say it , should , shouldn´t , will , won´t , would , wouldn´t

  • need , needn´t , dare , daren´t , so

  • that's an introduction to modal verbs

  • the following videos in this series will give you a more

  • in depth explanation of them

  • so , thank for watching , feel free to comment . If you enjoyed the video , thumbs up

  • thanks for watching !
