  • hey they are Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question

  • we have a lesson on the spelling ough and how do you pronounce certain words

  • the words look very confusing when you look at them so let's go through

  • definitions first our words are tough difficult through which means to go in

  • one side and come out the other thorough which means detailed though despite the

  • fact and thought to think or believe I have a whole class on ough and if

  • you're interested in that I'll put a link in the description so you can check

  • that out alright so for these words if you can just memorize these new

  • Spelling's that I came up with this is actually a fairly easy lesson so here

  • this ough in tough is going to be pronounced as us a short U and an F

  • because yes these letters G H sometimes do make the F sound so number one we

  • have tough tough to make that F sound make sure that the air is coming out of

  • your mouth and that your mouth is slightly open you're going to kind of

  • bite the inside of your bottom lip and your voice box is off and not moving

  • tough tough you can bite the outside of your lip and say tough if you want but I

  • bite the inside tough tough just make sure like I said

  • that air comes out next we have through and these two words are pronounced

  • exactly the same so you threw the ball and it went through the hoop so in this

  • case the ough is pronounced as an ew and to start that word we are going to

  • have the thr that is really difficult so you're going to stick your tongue out of

  • your mouth for that and make sure you let that air keep moving over the top

  • over your tongue so the air moves out th and then as you pull your tongue in

  • you're gonna try to point your tongue down or flip the tip of your tongue back

  • for that r through through through and for that ew sound

  • your just gonna pucker your lips and make a nice long ew sound through next we have

  • thorough this is a two syllable combination here ther

  • O thorough to do that th sound again tongue is out of the mouth not touching

  • the teeth and you want to make sure that the air can go over the top of that

  • tongue to get a little more specific I've had a few people ask about this

  • yeah you can't cup your tongue a little bit and you can see I do that with my

  • tongue so if you're more advanced definitely do that if you're more of a

  • beginner just make sure you try to stick your tongue out of your mouth and try

  • not to touch your teeth so when you do not touch your teeth that allows the air

  • to come over the top of your tongue so you have that nice th sound then move to

  • the ER again for the er sound kind of square tense lips point the tip of the

  • tongue down or flip it back and then move to that o by puckering the lips

  • thorough thorough thorough next we have though and to say this we're just going

  • to do that th sound like we just talked about and then add an O

  • though though though and make sure that o is nice and long and then the last one we

  • have thought and to make this one I think this is probably the most

  • confusing one because a lot of my students will say a t instead of the

  • th so make sure that you are allowing that air to come out of your mouth for

  • that th sound and then touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top

  • front teeth to end the word with that and then we're gonna have the open short

  • oh oval mouth wide open that allows the

  • tongue to get low in the mouth the tip of the tongue low and the back of the

  • tongue to be pulled up so we have thought thought thought let's give them

  • all a try tough through thorough though thought tough

  • through thorough though and thought and let me give you a sentence though I

  • thought it would be tough to get through I was successful due to my thorough plan

  • give it a try I know people are definitely going to notice the

  • difference have you found this helpful please share

  • this with your friends and give us a like leave us a comment below we love to

  • hear from you and if you are interested in practicing more check out my products

  • on Google Play and iTunes and my classes at Tarle speech thanks so much I'll see you

  • again soon
