  • - Good evening.

  • Normally on the first Monday in May

  • I would find myself on the steps

  • of the Metropolitan Museum of Art

  • greeting the guests for the annual Costume Institute Gala.

  • Instead, I find myself at home, like most of you.

  • This is a time of grief and of hardship for millions

  • and the postponement of a party is nothing in comparison.

  • And yet, one thing that we have learned

  • through this difficult time is that we need each other.

  • The community is essential to who we are.

  • If we are to come out of this pandemic stronger

  • and more resilient, we must emerge from it

  • connected as never before.

  • So in that spirit, I ask you to join me for a moment

  • while I talk about the Met.

  • The annual Gala makes up the majority of the funds

  • needed by the Costume Institute to run its department.

  • This year's exhibition about time, fashion, and duration

  • is the most poignant and most extraordinary exhibition

  • that the brilliant curator Andrew Bolton has ever created.

  • I can't wait for you all to see it

  • when it opens at the Museum in October.

  • But in the meantime, the Met,

  • like so many other cultural institutions,

  • needs your support.

  • The pain is shared by those that work

  • in the American fashion industry,

  • which has been hit so hard.

  • There are millions up and down the economic scale

  • whose livelihoods have been upended by this pandemic.

  • It's the reason that Tom Ford and I

  • launched A Common Thread, an initiative

  • to try and support those in the fashion community

  • who need it the most.

  • So far, we have raised almost $5 million

  • from donations both big and small

  • and we are so grateful for all of them.

  • Tonight Vogue is making its own donation

  • to both A Common Thread and the Met's Costume Institute.

  • If you feel you are able, please join us

  • using the links in the description below.

  • Even a few dollars will help.

  • It is no exaggeration to say

  • that we risk losing an entire generation

  • of brilliant young talent

  • if we don't help them try to get back on their feet.

  • And these are the young people who dream

  • of seeing their work shown at the Met one day.

  • It would be impossible

  • to recreate the Met Gala here tonight,

  • nonetheless I have asked a friend

  • to join us on Vogue's YouTube channel

  • to give us a special moment of joy and of hope.

  • She performed at the Met nearly a decade ago

  • and she very graciously told me that it was one

  • of the most extraordinary moments of her life.

  • I am so touched and so grateful

  • that she has agreed to sing for us tonight.

  • Please join me in welcoming

  • the amazing Florence Welch.
