  • -Alessia Cara, thank you so much

  • for Zooming in and talking to me.

  • -Thank you. -Oh, please.

  • We all appreciate it so much. We love you.

  • How are you doing, bud? You look great.

  • Where are you? -Thank you. I'm doing well.

  • I'm in my childhood bedroom right now.

  • I'm staying with my family, so I'm in my room.

  • -No way! You're back at home?

  • Is this the bedroom where it all started?

  • Where, like, you used to...

  • -Yeah, where I used to do all the covers and stuff.

  • It's here, yeah. This is it.

  • There's not much to it.

  • That's a door. That's -- This is my closet.

  • That's where I used to do all my covers on YouTube.

  • -Why would you do it there?

  • -I would do it there 'cause my parents, obviously,

  • lived with me. I was a kid.

  • And they would always, like, be doing stuff.

  • My mom would have work to do. My dad would be, like,

  • watching sports and stuff, and I didn't want to, like,

  • bother them with my belting and, like, learning guitar.

  • It doesn't sound good. Like, when you're a kid

  • trying to learn how to sing, it doesn't sound the greatest.

  • So I would always, like, go in there.

  • It was my little hub. -I heard some rumor

  • that you have a ventriloquist dummy with you.

  • Is that the truth? -Yeah, I have him here.

  • His name is Sonny. -Okay.

  • -His name is Sonny.

  • Here he is. -Oh, my gosh.

  • What is going on? [ Both laugh ]

  • Oh, my -- First of all, cool?

  • -The chain and earring.

  • Like, he's, like, next level.

  • -How did you end up with him, and who is he?

  • -So -- [ Laughs ] "Who is he?"

  • Well, I was at a radio station.

  • I was doing an interview, like -- when was it?

  • Like, almost two years ago now.

  • And I was doing an interview, and I saw him, like, sort of,

  • like, hanging on the door, just chilling.

  • And I was like, "What is that?"

  • Like, I needed to know who he is.

  • I mean, if you saw him, come on.

  • How do you not want to know who he is?

  • And they were like, "Well, like, we tried to, like,

  • sell him for charity a bunch of years in a row,

  • and nobody wanted him. You can literally have him.

  • His name is Sonny." I'm like, "I'm having him."

  • I took him, and then I took him to the airport with me

  • 'cause I had to fly back home.

  • Like, he didn't fit in my suitcase,

  • so I had to carry him through the airport, like...

  • [ Both laugh ]

  • And people were, like, taking pictures with him and stuff.

  • And he's amazing!

  • -Are you working on your ventriloquism?

  • -Yeah, a little bit.

  • I need my dominant hand for this.

  • Yeah, so -- I mean, you can see my lips moving.

  • I can't do the thing where my lips don't move.

  • -[ Laughing ] Wait. But that's the whole thing.

  • -I know! -That's the whole thing.

  • -I know! But I can't do it.

  • I can't do it.

  • If I cover my face. -All right. Try that.

  • -"Hi, Jimmy. How are you?"

  • I kind of stole Ernie's voice. It's very inspired by Ernie.

  • "How are you? It's so good to see you."

  • -Oh, my gosh. Alessia, this is ridiculous.

  • I can see your lips moving the whole time.

  • [ Laughing ] Oh, my gosh.

  • -I know, it's bad. I'm sorry.

  • -I will say, by the way, congrats on "The Willoughbys."

  • This movie on Netflix is, like, the number one movie

  • in every country all over the world.

  • It's, like, the biggest thing in the world,

  • and it's like everyone loves it.

  • But the best part, I think, is how you got this movie.

  • -Oh, we have to talk about that. This is -- yeah.

  • -I mean, please. -It's so cool.

  • -So this is, what, 2017 you were on our show?

  • -2017, yes.

  • It was I think only the second time I was on the show.

  • And we were talking about manifesting stuff,

  • 'cause I remember I came to the "Late Night" set

  • when I was, like, in drama class, like, on a field trip.

  • And I was like, "I'm gonna be on this show one day,"

  • and I remember telling you that.

  • And you were like, "Oh, my God. We manifested stuff.

  • Like, let's manifest something else."

  • And I was like, "I want to be in an animated movie one day."

  • And we, like, held hands on the desk and wished for it.

  • All right, I would like to voice...

  • -I would like to voice...

  • -...a character in an animation movie.

  • -Motion picture. -An animated movie.

  • Motion picture film one day.

  • [ Laughter, cheers, applause ]

  • Yes!

  • Let's play this back one day. Then we'll see.

  • -I think it'll be good.

  • -And then, literally, like,

  • less than like three months later,

  • I got an e-mail saying --

  • And the caption, like, the little header thing was --

  • Or, the subject was, "Dear Alessia,

  • we heard your wish on 'Jimmy Fallon.'"

  • And I opened it, and it was the "Willoughbys" offer.

  • -Wow! -It was so cool.

  • And it was literally because they saw our interview

  • where we were wishing for it, so thank you.

  • -See? So we did make it happen.

  • I love it! -Yes, we did.

  • It was so cool.

  • -We've got to think of, like, another --

  • What's another wish we could make?

  • -I don't know. Let's think.

  • What else do -- What else --

  • -Oh, I know what we could do. -What?

  • -Your charity. We can bring up --

  • We could raise a lot of money. -Yes.

  • That's my wish.

  • -DirectRelief.org. -Yeah.

  • -All right. So, we could raise a lot of money.

  • Anyone can give anything. I know everyone's been giving.

  • But, gosh, even a dollar will just make a difference --

  • a major difference -- so please check it out.

  • Go to this website, give whatever you can give.

  • Let's manifest. Let's hold hands through the screen.

  • -Yeah.

  • -And we're gonna raise a lot of money for directrelief.org.

  • -Absolutely. -Here we go. Awesome.

  • Your singing in the movie, you said that was --

  • came from a voice memo from your phone?

  • -Yeah.

  • -You're going to perform a song, "October," for us tonight.

  • -Yes.

  • -You don't have the voice memo of that on your phone, do you?

  • -I have the --

  • Me writing the bridge.

  • I remember -- Let me pull it up.

  • I was writing --

  • -You save all of this stuff on your phone?

  • -I do, yeah. Yeah, like, it's crazy.

  • I have, like, thousands and thousands.

  • But, um... -When do you record yours?

  • Like, when you wake up? Or in the middle of the night?

  • -Whenever, like, I get an idea.

  • So, this one happened to be at like 2:00 in the morning

  • I came up with the bridge idea.

  • So I'm just like half asleep, mumbling.

  • It sounds really horrible, but I'll play it for you.

  • Hold on. It's coming.

  • [ Singing indistinctly ]

  • I'm, like, tapping my chest.

  • -I love that! -Like, what is that?

  • It didn't even end up being that melody,

  • but that was the idea. And then --

  • -Oh, my gosh. I love that so much.

  • I mean, that's -- I love that you do that

  • because I'm trying to think in my head, like,

  • "Hey, do I have the same skill set as Alessia?"

  • And I don't. -Yes, you do.

  • -But I do those mumbling voice memos.

  • I definitely do that.

  • -You do? What do you have?

  • Wait. I want to hear one. -Let me see.

  • They told me again

  • So I did

  • [ Singing indistinctly ]

  • They told me to stop

  • So I ran

  • Yeah, that's how my songs go. -No, mine, too.

  • I do that, too, where you're speaking gibberish.

  • -[ Mumbling, singing ] -[ Laughs ] Yeah.

  • [ Laughs ] So bad, dude.

  • It's weird. -No, it's the best, though.

  • I love hearing that stuff. It's so cool.

  • -I'm so happy to see you and to see you smile.

  • And I just -- I miss you,

  • and I can't wait to see you in person again.

  • Thank you so much. It means so much to me

  • that you came on the show. I love you, pal.

  • -Love you, too. Thank you so much.

  • -Onwards and upwards, bud. -Onwards and upwards, yes.

  • Direct Relief, guys. Please, if you can.

  • It would mean a whole lot. 'Cause there are a lot of

  • healthcare workers that need our help right now.

  • -Let's do it. Bye, pal.

  • -Thank you. -Thank you.

-Alessia Cara, thank you so much
