  • This is the lock picking lawyer, and what I have for you today is an interesting lock from China on loan to me from Peter South.

  • Now the brand of this lock is not clear.

  • I'm told by a Chinese national that the writing on the side says big lock, but also that the nuances lost in translation.

  • The symbol on the bow of the K apparently is a vague good luck pattern, so that's not very helpful either.

  • But what I do know for sure is that this padlock has a very unusual key.

  • It engages pins on three different sides and his vaguely bowtie and shape.

  • Now this might be intimidating to a picker at first glance, but upon closer examination, we find quite a few ways to defeat this padlock very quickly.

  • The first is to use a padlock shim like this, which I am certain will work.

  • However, this is a borrowed lock, and I don't want to risk damaging that rubber.

  • But that's okay because there is another bypass that is even faster.

  • You see whomever put this together?

  • Failed lock design 101 where they would have learned to shield the back of the key way that prevents someone like me from sticking a tool all the way through the key way and directly manipulating the locking mechanism.

  • And that's exactly what we can do here.

  • I can reach down.

  • Just pushed aside one of the locking lugs.

  • Let's go get the other just that quickly.

  • We got it open.

  • In addition to this, and despite that intimidating looking mechanism, it can also be picked fairly rapidly.

  • Let's get some tension in there and I'm not even going to single pin pick it.

  • I'm just going to use this wave rake on each of the banks of pens.

  • Okay, that's the one on the left, the one on the right, the top bank back to the left, and we got it open.

  • So while this lock certainly is interesting and it has a pretty cool looking K, it's not something that provides even more than a token level of security.

  • In any case, that's all I have for you today.
