  • [Paul]: Ah, LAX, we meet again.

  • This year, we're going to Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and New Zealand,

  • and I have a 22 hour layover in Japan, in Tokyo.

  • So, I wasn't expecting that but...

  • So we're doing five countries this time.

  • Let's go to some South-East Asian countries, shall we?

  • [Music]

  • So, I just arrived here, at Tokyo Narita airport.

  • I'm so super excited - I'm gonna meet up with Chris, my geograpeep,

  • and Tomohiro, they're going to pick me up,

  • and they're going to show me downtown.

  • This is my first time in the world's largest city.

  • [Music]

  • Here's Chris.

  • Chris: Hey, how are you? Good to have you.

  • [Music]

  • Alright, so let's interview Chris.

  • Paul: How exactly did you end up here in Japan?

  • Chris: Okay, so, funny story,

  • when I was a little boy, in the US in upstate New York,

  • every Saturday I would get really excited because I could watch 'Godzilla' movies.

  • So, one day I got out our family's atlas and proceeded to check the entire map,

  • until I found Tokyo where 'Godzilla' came from.

  • And that got me really excited and so I was always interested in Japan ever since then.

  • [Music]

  • Paul: Alright, the objective now, is to find Henry,

  • geograpeep number two.

  • Where is he? Where's Henry?

  • Henry: Barby!

  • I'm doing great, thank you!

  • Paul: Henry, geograpeep number two, how did you end up in Japan?

  • Henry: Me? I've been in Japan for two years.

  • You see, two years ago I graduated from the University of Oxford.

  • Paul: Okay!

  • Henry: And I thought I'd come to Japan to start a new life and I've had a variety of teaching jobs.

  • Paul: Geograpeep number three!

  • So, from Lithuania, Geidrė.

  • Geidrė: And I'm very proud of it!

  • Paul: How did you end up in Japan?

  • Geidrė: I came to Japan half a year ago, I'm studying here.

  • I want to explore this country as much as possible.

  • Paul: And you want to explore. Good. This is such a beautiful city.

  • I love it! What's your favourite thing in Tokyo?

  • Geidrė: Well, maybe not in Tokyo but in Yokohama.

  • Paul: Yokohama, okay.

  • Geidrė: Which is right next to Tokyo and there you can go to a tower to see the city from the top.

  • It's quite interesting to see the nightlife.

  • Paul: And did you know of Henry before?

  • Geidrė: No.

  • Paul: Or you just met each other?

  • Geidrė: I just met him and I saw him with the logo.

  • Paul: Is that our logo?

  • Geidrė: You are our connection.

  • Paul: See how diverse the geograpeep community is?

  • Alright, let's go and check out Asakusa.

  • [Music]

  • I was told by Chris that this building has no nails.

  • Is that correct, Chris?

  • Chris: Yes. For all traditional Japanese temples etcetera,

  • the buildings are held together by precision cutting,

  • and then wood joints but there's no nails inside any of the temples that you see in Japan.

  • Paul: Okay so apparently, you put 100 Yen in,

  • then you take out a little stick....got one.

  • And then you match the kanji with this thing.

  • It's your fortune.

  • Paul: Okay, so it can only get worse after this.

  • Chris: Yeah.

  • Paul: That's my fortune.

  • I'm gonna get in a plane crash.

  • Apparently I have to fold it, like this, is that right?

  • Chris: Yep.

  • Paul: And tie it around?

  • My pinkies and my thumbs?

  • Chris: Yup.

  • Paul: Like this?!

  • Chris: Yup.

  • Paul: I can't even touch...yeah what?!

  • I think I got it, I think I got it!

  • Okay, I cheated. [Laughter]

  • [Music]

  • I can't believe this city has like the entire population of Canada in it.

  • It's just so massive, I can't see everything in one day.

  • I really wish I could just stay for a whole month or two and just walk around.

  • There's just so much stuff here.

  • This is the world's largest city.

  • My first impressions:

  • so many colours, so many cartoons, there's a lot of cutesy stuff.

  • So many vending machines, so many temples

  • Ah! I love it, I love it, I loooove it!

  • I can't believe I'm in Japan!

  • [Music]

  • [Intelligible]

  • [?]: Wow, that's awesome!

  • Paul: Oh my gosh.

  • [Music]

  • Paul: Oh, this is awesome.

  • [Music]

  • Paul: Here's where we're eating.

  • Paul: Plug outlet. There's a light. This right here's a TV.

  • They gave me these nice pyjamas.

  • That's all you need.

  • [Music]

  • Paul: So it is morning here in Shinjuku and first of all,

  • There are vending machines everywhere!

  • Everywhere!

  • And I'm going to get some breakfast - I saw something in this one,

  • I don't know what it is - It's like a sandwich with noodles in it.

  • So, naturally, I'm going to get it.

  • [Vending machine noises]

  • [Music]

  • And I think I'm going to wash it down with 'Let's Vitamin!'.

  • A sandwich with noodles.

  • Alright.

  • Hm.

  • Not bad.

  • What should we do?

  • Let's vitamin!

  • [Music]

  • Ah, Tokyo was amazing, definitely got to come back, however,

  • do you wanna see more? In Singapore?

  • Then let's go!

  • Yes!

  • [Music]

  • So I'm here at the departures lobby, and I just got my ticket for Batam City, Indonesia.

  • Aw, check it out,

  • the Indonesians are so cordial.

[Paul]: Ah, LAX, we meet again.
