  • This is the lock picking lawyer.

  • And what I have for you today is the Honeywell model 61 05 key lock box.

  • Now, I have long believed that boxes like this actually make you less secure.

  • And that's because you're collecting all your keys in one place, neatly tagging their use and then securing them behind a locked that rates only slightly better than a keep outside.

  • I'll show you just how bad it is in a moment.

  • But first we need to address a significant problem with this particular unit.

  • The core is currently in the locked position that you can see the door opens freely.

  • That's because it is missing a small tab that ought to be welded on the inside of this wall.

  • That tab would engage with the locking camp.

  • We look at the inside of the wall, we don't see any damage to the powder coat, which means they probably just forgot to weld it on.

  • I have no idea how widespread an issue this is, but it is a big miss.

  • We're going to ignore it for now, though, and see what it takes to pick this open.

  • I'm going to use a small wiper insert and this wave rake just a couple of jiggles and it opened up.

  • Let's do it a few more times so you can see that's not a fluke.

  • Okay, as you saw, that was pretty easy.

  • But there may be an even lower scale attack.

  • We look at the side, we can see an exposed hinge, and all we need to do is not that pin out and the door will open.

  • I pop that out just enough to grab it with a pair of pliers, and once that pin is pulled out, we can access any of the keys.

  • Now, the rule of thumb for lock boxes like this is it should be more secure than any lock associated with the stored keys.

  • So unless you don't actually read any security, just the organization that a box like this provides or you're storing the keys to some comically insecure locks.

  • This is probably a product tow avoid.

  • In any case, that's all I have for you today.
