  • A way to enjoy the big screen from 3

  • the comfort of your car. 4

  • Drive-ins were once all the rage 5

  • and now some theaters are seeing 6

  • patrons flock to them once again 7

  • during the coronavirus outbreak 8

  • for some social distancing approved fun. 9

  • When's the movie gonna start? 10

  • Well Bella, not until it gets dark out, 11

  • but I know you like the drive-in and I do too. 12

  • Yeah, I like it. 13

  • Roy Jackson has been going to The Admiral Twin 14

  • in Tulsa, Oklahoma for decades. 15

  • His eight year old daughter, Bella, 16

  • is a regular too. 17

  • A trip to the drive-in has taken on 18

  • new meaning for the family. 19

  • Drive in movies are America 20

  • and it gives families the sense of hope 21

  • and understanding that everything 22

  • is gonna be okay. 23

  • When you're within your own family vehicle, 24

  • that's safety, that's something that makes things normal 25

  • and you can control that, 26

  • your own environment, 27

  • to know that you're going to be safe 28

  • and that you're also gonna keep others safe, 29

  • especially in this time of social distancing. 30

  • Blake Smith owns 31

  • The Admiral Twin and The Starlite Drive-In 32

  • in Wichita, Kansas. 33

  • He's kept both open to give families 34

  • some fun during this tough time. 35

  • I'm looking at it in the sense of 36

  • it's really more of a community service in some ways 37

  • that people are gonna get cabin fever. 38

  • This is a safe way to be entertained 39

  • and just get out of the house 40

  • for just a little bit. 41

  • But owners are taking 42

  • extra precautions are taking people safe. 43

  • Blake closed his concession stands 44

  • and is asking people to bring their own snacks. 45

  • In St. Louis, Missouri, 46

  • the owner of the Starlite Drive-In 47

  • says he's spacing cars farther apart 48

  • and asking patrons to use the restroom 49

  • before they arrive. 50

  • Doug Mercille says he'll stay open 51

  • as long as he's allowed to. 52

  • Unless they just come to us 53

  • and tell us that we need to shut down, 54

  • we feel that we provide a safe environment. 55

  • That safe environment 56

  • and momentary escape from the news 57

  • is now more important than ever, Blake says. 58

  • I think it's a really important experience. 59

  • A good movie can take you away 60

  • from the stress for a couple of hours. 61
