  • So what is a co location?

  • Facility?

  • Essentially a co location facility is an apartment complex for your servers.

  • So if you're going to spin up a start up company and for whatever reason, you need to use your own hardware versus something like a dub us or is your or if you're responsible for I T and a company or organization, and you need be able to run your hardware.

  • But you don't have infrastructure within your building or facilities to be able to maintain a server room, you may want to go into a co location facility, so co location facility is essentially a data center for rent.

  • So this is a fully professional data center with professional H V A C multiple connections for electricity in case one connection goes down.

  • Plus, they'll have a backup generator.

  • They'll have multiple connections to the Internet.

  • They'll have multiple ways of making sure that the data center stays up even in disaster scenarios.

  • So the idea is that you can go.

  • You can put your hardware there.

  • This is important to understand you're not renting harder from them.

  • Generally, you're putting your own hardware into their facility to make sure that you have optimum up time.

  • So when you go in to rent space at a co location facility there, you'll rent by a number of different ways.

  • You can go in and you can rent an entire racks.

  • You can go in depending on where you are right now.

  • For about $1000 a month, you can rent an entire 48 to 50 you rack with a gigabit per second Internet connection, plus the power required to run what's ever in the rack.

  • You could get that for about $1000 a month.

  • And so the idea is, you can go and you can put whatever you need to in that wreck.

  • So if you're doing something very complicated with networking, let's say you're going to be doing some kind of hosted firewall solution within that 48 or 50 Iraq, you can put in multiple routers and multiple switches and multiple firewalls, and maybe put one single server.

  • And that's how your infrastructure will run with in that code, location, facility and the other hand, maybe you want to do something such as an off site backup solutions.

  • Your clients will connect to your server and be able to do the back up to your servers.

  • Well, then, if you have a full 48 or 50 you rack, you could just put in a whole lot of storage so you could put in, you know, multiple Nass's or a sand solution in there.

  • So essentially you have three or 400 hard drives, all spinning within this one rack, and then you have one router, one switch in order to to route where the packets where the communications goes.

  • And so that's the important thing to understand about the code, location, facility and why it's very interesting.

  • Very cool is you get to put your own equipment in there.

  • If you want to put in a blazing state of the art a socket 500 core processor thing you know, brand new from down, you can put that in there.

  • On the other hand, if you ever go to Cho location facilities, you will see some old stuff.

  • Sometimes you will see literally a hardware that is 20 years old.

  • The reason being is that the hardware works fine.

  • The hardware does whatever it is the corporation needs it to.

  • D'oh, they just simply need to put it into a facility that's safe and secure and reliable so you can purchase.

  • Or you can rent by the rack.

  • You can rent many times by the half rack.

  • Sometimes you can rip by the court.

  • Iraq.

  • It is important to understand, though, when we talk about rack, half rack or court Iraq.

  • That's not necessarily a standardized number of use.

  • So a full rack might be 48 you or full rack, maybe 50.

  • You or a full rack might be 45 you.

  • So it's very important that you understand whenever you're going in there to purchase a full rack or 1/2 Iraq or a quarterback that you know how many you you're actually getting, so that when you put your equipment in there that it will all fit properly many times you can also rent per you.

  • So back when I created Everyman, I t.

  • I literally had to one U Z on servers.

  • So one of these EON servers was the Web server.

  • The other server of was what actually presented the video, something called Flash Media Server.

  • And so I was able to rent simply to use worth of Rackspace, shove my servers in there and everything worked perfectly.

  • And so why This is good is especially in things like security scenarios.

  • So nowadays we have hip a compliance PC I compliance.

  • And there are some things with that where you actually need physical security on your hardware on your equipment.

  • And so if you put your equipment into a data center, then you get that physical security beyond that again, you get a quality of eight V A C systems that is just simply unaffordable for most corporations.

  • The electrical redundancy, the I SPD, Internet redundancy, so many things that you get.

  • You get a first class data center experience, and you only have to pay a fraction that cost.

  • Whenever you are going to be going in to pay in a cool location facility.

  • Many times, it will be a package deal again.

  • Around here in the Baltimore area, you can get a one ah, full full rack, plus in one gigabit per second connection for about $1000 per month.

  • But you do have to realize different places sell.

  • The service's differently.

  • So when I purchased my my to use back in the day, I actually had to pay rent per you, So each you cost me a certain amount per month, and then I paid per megabit per second, Um and so that cost me an additional amount of money.

  • And so this is something to be thinking about where you need to think about not just how many use you need, but also how much band with that you're actually going to need and make sure that you you have a good idea of what it is.

  • Nowadays.

  • You can get a little is a megabit per second, you get a gig per second, you could get 10 gigs per second and some of these data centers.

  • But again, that's the kind of thing that's going to cost you a lot of money.

  • And so there's no reason to pay for 10 gigs per second if you're barely using two megabits per second.

  • So this is something to to think about when you go out and you look at co location facilities.

  • Do you realize that most of the time that they need at least a one year contract?

  • So this is a business agreement.

  • It's not like a W s.

  • Where's your where you you buy it by the minute or by the hour by the week.

  • Normally you go in, and so, whatever that is, whenever you're going to be purchasing, let's say that full rack with a gig per second for $1000 a month.

  • You don't just budget for one month or two months.

  • You budget for 12 months, so you don't think about it as it's going to cost you Ah, $1000 a month.

  • It's going to be a $12,000 for the year, so you do have to take that into consideration when you're going to be buying into a co location facility.

  • But this is a great thing.

  • In the modern world of business, I feel that far too many people rely on cloud service is A W s and azure for the infrastructure that they're going to deploy to be.

  • To understand when you're looking at a W s or azure, the cost for performance if you're doing things like compute or database service's database service is is great.

  • It is very difficult to compete with compute, and database service is with A W.

  • S and a sure, But when you're looking at bandwidth.

  • So the actual amount of data that's going from your servers out to the clients or if you're looking at storage, those are the types of things that can absolutely kill you.

  • So if you're going to create the next YouTube, I would argue there is no way that you would want to build that off of A W s or is your because the storage cost is going to kill you, and the band with cost is going to kill you.

  • Whereas if you build your own infrastructure in a co location facility again, you can fill up.

  • You can fill up one of these racks with a pet, a bite of storage, and after you get done with the initial hardware cost of that, it cost you $1000 a month.

  • That's it, right, because if nobody goes to your site, it cost you $1000 a month.

  • If you know tens of thousands of people go to your site, it cost you $1000 a month.

  • So it's a way to be able to contain your cost.

  • If you know the actual resource is that you're going to need, additionally, something be thinking about is if you were with a private organization or private company, and you're thinking about building out your server resource?

  • Is you thinking about building out?

  • Let's say a C R M Solution HR Solutions.

  • Any kind of service is that would normally be taken care of by a server within your own infrastructure.

  • One thing to realize is now that I SP connections air so fast many businesses can get a gigabit per second.

  • Some places you can't even get 10 gigabits per second.

  • You can now use VPN to be able to connect your client computers very easily to a data center that somewhere else.

  • So if you're going, have all of your HR information if you're gonna have all your C R.

  • M.

  • Information if you're gonna have your billing information or any of that kind of stuff, do you really want that in your facility in your facility, your facility could get burned down.

  • Your facility could get burglarized.

  • The H V a c, the the electric.

  • There's a bunch of there's a whole bunch of issues that could happen if the your servers are in your own facility.

  • If you put the servers off site in a code location facility, then you know that it's more or less secure again.

  • Unless there's a nuclear weapon or nuclear bomb or a tornado, they're going to be fine.

  • And with high speed Internet connection, you can set up your router for your business to simply send people through a VP, a connection to your server infrastructure and echolocation facility.

  • And that way you get all of what echolocation facility has to offer, but you're able to do it for your organization.

  • So these are some things to think about in this modern world again, with eight of us and azure and no digital ocean.

  • And some of these cloud service is that air that air great that are wonderful.

  • I do feel that co location facilities far too often are overlooked, and it's to the detriment to many startup companies.

  • If I feel if more start up companies were able to are more willing to deploy their own hardware and co location facilities, they would find the cost for doing that would be significantly less than using the cloud service providers, and I think that would give a better, better experience to their own users and definitely cost him a lot less money at the end of the day.

  • So that's what a co location facility is, and that's why it matters.

So what is a co location?
