  • so way have successfully built the suit of Iron Man armor from three D printed titanium, and we have determined that it is bulletproof.

  • But bullets are only one of the things you see.

  • Tony Stark survived in the suit.

  • You also see explosions constantly going off right next to him, and he is relatively unaffected.

  • For the question is, can our Iron Man suit protect the wearer from an explosion?

  • First, inform us.

  • I think it's important to go into what kills you in an explosion.

  • The first thing that kills you is the shrapnel and the fire.

  • But if you survive, both of those things can still be harmed or killed by the blast pressure wave.

  • That is, as the explosive is expanding.

  • It creates a front off air, moving at an incredibly high speed.

  • And when this pressure wave goes through your body, it moves every Adam of her body a few microns at well past the speed of sound and turns the inside of you to jelly.

  • It's awful.

  • So how do we test whether our armor can protect aware from that?

  • That's why I'm standing on the bomb range in Alameda County right now.

  • This is a burst disk.

  • It's made by a company called Sicko.

  • And these burst discs have been calibrated to burst it.

  • Anything over £75 per square inch of pressure.

  • And that is an amount that we have calculated as a pressure that would definitely kill you if you received it near an explosion.

  • We're going to place the burst disks at six feet, 12 feet, 18 feet and 24 feet from the explosion to test the impact of the blast.

  • Three.

  • Yeah.

  • One.

  • Awesome.

  • I wanted one or more burst disk to break, but not all four.

  • I'm gonna predict we got what I'm hoping for.

  • Oh, shoot.

  • Wait a second.

  • What?

  • Well, it looks like it looks like all four burst disks are intact.

  • That tells me that we need to be even closer to this blast.

  • For is really close.

  • Builder Jentzsch actor and I will place the burst disks at three feet four feet and five feet from the explosion.

  • The farthest disk that ruptures will determine our death zone.

  • Then we'll repeat the explosion with the Iron Man armor in that death.

  • So now that we have used our burst disks to determine the perfect death zone.

  • The distance at which the blast pressure wave would kill you.

  • It's time to put our Iron Man armor in harm's way.

  • And to do this we're using now four burst fists and we're going to place two of them inside the armor and two of them outside the army.

  • Let's go three feet.

  • Perfect.

  • Awesome.

  • And after we detonate, what we're looking for is any difference in behavior from the ones that were inside to the ones that were outside.

  • After all the time and effort that went into building this suit.

  • I can't believe we're about to do this.

  • 30.

  • Come on, man.

  • One, uh, wow.

  • Standing his head still on and his body is still there.

  • That was a really good son.

  • Excellent.

  • We're all clear.

  • All right, well, look on first pass.

  • The suit itself survived the explosion.

  • Admirably.

  • Helmet did Gray.

  • We lost one of his both years.

  • His radio way over here.

  • No wonder he can't hear.

  • Let's pull the chest off.

  • Oh, what is it?

  • These two burst disks outside the armor fully burst all the way through, as we would totally expect, but the inside one is unmarked so clearly the armor rendered a lethal explosion survivable.

  • I just say when we started down the path of this project, I had no idea how elaborate it would get.

  • And I really did not expect this material.

  • The three D printed titanium to perform so well be so Brazilian, and to have these incredible material properties that it is continually demonstrated.
