  • Because it's the rafters tonight.

  • It's the baftas glamour, the excitement, the length.

  • And now I should add, Don't be too concerned tonight because you're in safe house.

  • I'm not going to be mean to anyone because you might know in my other job, I'm a chat show host, which means apparently I have never seen a film I didn't really enjoy.

  • It's true.

  • I love cats.

  • I'm not even joking.

  • Was brilliant cats, but with so clever I loved it.

  • Prizes for acting is not that hard.

  • No, a huge thank you must be made to all our American friends for making the effort to come here tonight because, you know, I know it takes ages to sail across the Atlantic, doesn't it?

  • I think it will be remembered as a year when White Man finally broke through.

  • I mean 11 nominations for Joker, which is essentially the story of a white man who makes himself even whiter.

  • The wonderful Jo Jo Rabbit nominated water film, Adorable, a growing child and cartoonish monster is like when Greta Thornburg met Trump other great films, nominated tonight at 1917 2 Popes on the Incredible parasites off So good it really is.

  • I was thrilled to hear of parasites nominations that at first I didn't think it was a new category for agents.

  • How brilliant was.

  • Once upon a time in Hollywood, it takes a nostalgic look.

  • Back at the Hollywood of 50 years ago, what we saw was a misogynistic, male dominated industry resistant to change, taking a nostalgic look back at 50 years ago and the Irishman 10 nominations, Ladies and Gentlemen also released on Netflix, prompting director Martin Scorsese to implore people to respect the film by not watching it on their phone and didn't really need to worry being whose battery lasts that long, and the BAFTA is presented to Laura Dern for Marriage Store.

  • When I was six years old, my mother received this very award in this category, thanks to Mr Scorsese, and it sat on our piano and my friend asked me.

  • What's that mask?

  • And I said my mom told me that it's what friends give you to congratulate you because you get to have a job you love.

  • I'm not sure if everyone here is across the controversy, but you see, there has been a distinct lack of nominations for felines.

  • It's really shocking, but at least I get Thio.

  • Hold this bafta for a moment and, well, what a great way to stop yourself from getting Corona virus.

  • Sam Mendez, Mom Scorsese, Todd Phillips, Quentin Tarantino, Long joon ho.

  • I look at the exceptional, daring talent nominated in this category, and I don't I don't think I could do what they do.

  • Honestly, I just don't have the balls.

  • And the BAFTA is awarded to Sam Mendy's for 1917.

  • After in the midst of all this hoopla and stuff, it's sometimes easy to forget actual experience of shooting a movie on dhe.

  • I had a kind of directors paradise in this film that I think I will never, ever have again.

  • So I want to say a real thank you to the people who actually helped me make this film 23 Amazing produces Jane and tengan on Kala MacDougal and my dear friend I've known since I was 14 years old.

  • Pippa Harris, the best producers really the best, the most supportive.

  • Tow an incredible cast to George Mukai, who was extraordinary in this film, and Dean Charles Chaplin two.

  • It's a bit the classiest bunch of day players the director could ever have.

  • Andrew Scott, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Richard Madden.

  • Incredible cast Thank you thank you to the most extraordinary crew, and especially to four people my production designer and friend Dennis Gassner to the brilliant Tom Newman for his music to the extraordinary unsung hero of this movie was Lee Smith, the editor on especially to Roger Deakins, the master himself home.

  • Thank you, too.

  • Yes, it's a war movie that we made, but it's also a movie about home on about family.

  • So it's moving to me to get this in my hometown for the first time and to be able to say thank you to my beautiful family to say thank you to my Children, Jo and Phoebe on the splendidly attired Charlie, who was sitting with us tonight and of course, especially to my inspiration, my beautiful wife, Allie, this is for you.

  • Thank you very much indeed.

  • I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight.

  • Baptise have always been very supportive of my career, and I'm deeply appreciative.

  • But I have to say that I also feel conflicted because so many of my fellow actors that are deserving don't have that same privilege.

  • I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you're not welcome here.

  • I think that's the message that we're sending two people that have contributed S O much to our medium and our industry and in ways that we benefit from, Um, I don't think anybody wants a a handout or preferential treatment, although that's what we give ourselves every year.

  • I think that people just want to be acknowledged and appreciated and respected for their work.

  • This is not a self righteous condemnation because I'm ashamed to say that I'm part of the problem.

  • I have not done everything in my power to ensure that the set their work on or inclusive, but I think that it's more than just having sex that are multicultural.

  • I think that we have to really do the hard work to truly understand systemic racism.

  • Um, I, uh I think that it is the obligation of the people that have created and perpetuate and benefit from a system of oppression to be the ones that dismantle it.

  • So that's on us.

  • So I would like to share this with every single member of the crew on the team who gave their time on themselves to the projects on On the whole process in the film itself is is a lesson in the goodness that can come and go into something that's bigger than yourself.
