Late last night, the CDC released new data showing that nearly 40% of the people hospitalized with Corona virus or under the age of 54 that is more younger people than initially thought who are seriously ill with this virus.

For more on that and all the latest public health updates, former U.

Surgeon general and author Dr Vivek More the joins us now, Doctor, thanks so much for joining us.

I'm glad to be with you today, So we're seeing these new numbers on the virus and younger people.

And what's your advice to people in that younger age group category?

Well, these new numbers about the impact of covert night.

You know, young people are telling us that we're still each day learning about the full effects of this virus, and we would be very cautious about the fact that we're just getting in the know.

For weeks now, we've been saying that it is the elderly and people with chronic conditions that are the greatest risk.

But unfortunately, the message that many have taken from that is that if you're young, you have nothing to worry about.

These numbers are telling us a different story.

They're telling us that a significant portion of people who are hospitalized are actually young and not just hospitalized in regular beds but in intensive care units.

We're gonna learn Maur information like this about who's at risk, and we've just gotta all be cautious and make sure that whether we're older or younger, whether we have chronic conditions or not, that we're taking the precautions we need to protect ourselves, but also to protect other people we know now in call, increasingly, that people who are asymptomatic they can also spread this disease.

And so this is why you're seeing such urgent public health messages come out because we have to take measures to reduce physical contact between people to reduce the spread of this fires so we can protect the most vulnerable that we also saw.

President Trump announced today that Clark, when a drug used to treat malaria, may actually help treat Corona virus patients.

One of those diseases have in common that this could make this medicine treat both well.

What we have are some small preliminary studies that show that medicines like Hydroxy Clore Quinn and on like grim death, severe could potentially be helpful.

I'm caveat ing this so much is because there's still more that we need to learn to understand if these medicines are both safe and effective for use in patients with Kobe.

That's why you heard the FDA comeback actually during today's White House briefing and caution that we should not assume that these medicines are going to be available to anybody who walks into a hospital.

We still need to understand if they're useful.

What the FDA is doing and with the administration, I think is you know, deserves credit for is they're trying to accelerate this study of these drugs.

They're trying to accelerate the development of a vaccine, and that's that's important because right now we have no treatment or vaccine for this virus, and the sooner we get one, the easier and the more quickly will be able to protect the population.

And now just a few quick questions that are pretty straightforward but are likely on many people's minds As more people start to contract Corona virus.

I'm ordering, let's say if I get it does that automatically mean most likely everyone in my household will get it.

Well, what we know is that this is a very contagious virus.

In fact, it seems to be more contagious than the flu.

So it's not a guarantee that if you have Covert 19 that everyone in your household will get it.

It depends on several things on their immune system and how good they are.

And you are with hygienic practices like washing your hands, covering your mouth with a tissue when you cough and cleaning off surfaces that could easily get contaminated, eh?

So that you don't pick them up from that surface.

So it depends a lot on your behavior practices.

But I'll tell you, what we do know is that for every one person who gets the seasonal flu, they will pass it on to, on average, 1.3 people.

In this particular case, it seems that cove it 19 for every one person who gets that, they pass it on to about 2.2 people on average.

This is a very contagious virus, and as we practice, social distancing is it safe to go out to the grocery store to get food delivered.

And how should we keep ourselves in our products clean?

In either case, well, this is a good question because we want people to keep their distance from each other.

We want them to dramatically reduce physical contact.

But that said there times you're gonna need to go out.

You know, outside, You know, in in nature you just need to make sure you're keeping at least six feet between you and other people.

Ah, and make sure you're not in crowded spaces.

But it's also there times you need to go to the grocery store.

What I would recommend is that you make sure you wash your hands when you come back.

When you're out that you do not touch your face on that, you try to minimize how many surfaces you touch, recognizing that every surface is potentially contaminated.

If you can get groceries delivered, that's great.

You can still go out and try to go out during off peak hours when the stores were less crowded.

Uh, and if you are elderly or you have chronic conditions like heart disease, lung disease or diabetes, call a friend and ask them if they'll pick up groceries for you.

There's no reason to take risks that you can avoid if you can reach out for help.
