Hello and welcome to another Isles writing video.

Today we're looking at how words are counted on the written portion of your Isles examination.

This week, I received an email from a student asking how words are counted on the Isles examination and according to and Examiner colleague of mine, the following list of word types all count as a single word when written in your response.

So articles A and the each count as one word propositions in on at under between et cetera.

Each count as one word on your examination numbers, whether they're written using digits one or whether they are written fanatically each count as one word and just a quick comments that if you choose to use digits in one portion of your response, you should continue using them throughout the entire response.

And the same goes if you choose to write numbers phonetically.

So, for example, words hyphenated such as 45 45 would count as one words not to or words coupled through historical usage such as perhaps all inclusive.

All inclusive would count as one word self evident, self evident would count as one words and also words that are coupled using ah, hyphen with a prefix so, such as ex wife would count as one word.

The last two categories each count as one word, but these air categories that students should try to avoid if they can, because often these can make your writing sound less academic.

So abbreviations such as FBI would count as one word or another abbreviation could be, um, USA has suppose could count as one word symbols.

Please avoid these if you can, but if you make the mistake of using them, they will be counted as one word.

So, for example, symbols like the and symbol would count as one word.
