  • get to the point of, you know, Kim Kardashian and begging the styling west tweeting about animal like you gotta go through like a lot of, like, lowbrow like him.

  • Like Suck my drink.

  • Oh oh, from to NAMI Classics like No Rudo and Dragon Ball Z to the films of Makoto Shinkai and Studio Ghibli, food has always been a massively important part of the animal viewing experience.

  • Sushi Rahman Omu, Rice Takayuki.

  • Somehow, these incredibly delicious meals are made to look even more appealing when scarf down by your favorite characters.

  • But you want to animate, do you watch and a Japanese Japanese.

  • But today I'm going back to the source material.

  • I'm heading to Japanese bookstore Kino, Kenya, for a manga shopping spree with rapper and comic book obsessive Denzel Curry.

  • I wanted to hear more about Denzel's favorite titles and better understand hip hop's deep appreciation for Japanese animation.

  • Well, it's pretty clear after just even meeting you for two minutes that you love anime.

  • Um, super.

  • What would you say your most into right now?

  • What you're watching right now?

  • One punch man.

  • Very nice.

  • And you can tell from your music that animate manga play a really huge inspirational role.

  • I'd say, How did you first get into it?

  • Like, how did it start mixing with, well, music?

  • Let's take it back to our little jip Brought me and my brother in the room and basically three, get out of school, we'll go straight.

  • So watching to NAMI, No homework, nothing watching it.

  • That's when I was playing all the old ego.

  • These like I'm talking about like Big O feels Zoi, Dragonball Z point, Dragonball.

  • And then I remember I got into you hockey show.

  • But But it was on.

  • Don't swim for hours and hours like the first time I ever seen cartoons.

  • Carson.

  • Seriously.

  • And then when they put it on tsunami Oh, look from there.

  • So my love for enemy started to grow and growing growth guys, they doing washing parts in that?

  • So have you ever noticed how Goku?

  • And basically anybody that trained how they eat food, they need a lot of rice.

  • Rahman, See a lot of beef in there a lot?

  • Yeah, and a lot of like turkey leg like chicken leg.

  • I feel like food in manga and anime is drawn and depicted so well It always makes me really hungry.

  • And I also love that there's this kind of sequence of everybody just shoving food in their mouth like I'm training.

  • So therefore, I need to see Oh, yeah, but that's the point.

  • Like I remember when I was working out, like, every day I'll just eat.

  • Yeah, you got that fervor.

  • Yeah.

  • Yeah.

  • Okay, Ready to go on stage.

  • Get off.

  • Begin.

  • Go to sleep.

  • Why do you think?

  • Hip hop and rap culture references One punch man Dragonball Z Naruto Anime stuff all the time.

  • A lot of people reference that because, you know, there's a lot of bars you could put into it, but this is like what we came up on, You know, You see how the reserve, the chisel, everybody Wu Tang Clan came up on the Wu Tang Collection Cowboy, bebop samurai Sam Po, Dragonball Z.

  • This is our will 10 collection.

  • You know, it's just what we grew up on and we want to be powerful, would be good at something will be the best and whatever you want to do.

  • So that's why I feel like resonate with enemy a lot because there's a lot of character development, and it helps us where our development.

  • As a child, we talked about my favorite in a maze.

  • So I want to talk about your great thank you so much.

  • I would say a lot of my stuff changes depending on the season.

  • And I kind of want to keep a variety but very into food Enemy lately, a lot of food in way look so good.

  • Looks delicious.

  • Yeah, and I feel like they do a really good job depicting everyday Japanese.

  • Have you heard from yours?

  • No, I have not Really.

  • Okay, so it's a surprise.

  • It's actually really interesting because Shoko Vicky kind of takes the angle of that hero journey, but with food.

  • So this kid goes to like a culinary school, and it's like life or death.

  • So it follows that kind of ZBZ mentality where there's always a stronger, better ship.

  • Yeah, how many chefs are better than a lot?

  • He's at the very bottom.

  • Oh, I e like.

  • This is like totally valley.

  • This is like give you anxiety.

  • What's at the bottom?

  • He's not.

  • He's just young and he's new and they're in an elite culinary school.

  • And he's like a street.

  • I'm like this like this.

  • I'm so excited.

  • Please.

  • Another food manga and anime that's really popular that showcases really good Japanese food is sweetness and lightning, and about a single father who tries to figure out how to raise his daughter be suddenly having to be the one that cooks and takes your house.

  • It's incredible because they also give you a little recipes in the middle of the manga showing you how the dad figured out how to kind of create this dish and we created for his daughter.

  • It's really sweet.

  • So this is like the complete opposite side of sugar geeky for you.

  • Stay at home dads.

  • E recommend this All right, now that we've kind of established our enemy knowledge a little bit and we're artistas well, let's go draw some animal.

  • You don't wanna do this.

  • Let's go meet my friend.

  • Okay, go.

  • Reading about food and manga is one thing, but knowing how to draw it is another.

  • Misaka Rocks is the best selling author and illustrator behind manga titles like Bounce Back and Biker Girl.

  • Denzel has been hard at work on his own comic book for months, but we're meeting up with Mexico so I can finally learn how to draw like a true manga master.

  • So pretty much Regan.

  • A droll ball, like a girl scout the monarch after with shiny hair, full moon eyes color.

  • Yes, you want And I really like to see how you're gonna do.

  • Awesome male Captain.

  • Let's do this thing.

  • So the Farsi ally, you did roll like, start going pulls lines.

  • But then the sidelines.

  • A little lower of yes school.

  • That's among the character and a female.

  • So you wanted a really big eyes.

  • That's the key.

  • So that's what you want to draw a little?

  • Yeah, Lord.

  • Yeah, I got you.

  • And then next line hold on the same time we Oh, that's super fast.

  • Okay, You gonna try to catch up?

  • I know you're working on your own manga right now, producing an illustrating and writing and doing everything it can.

  • You tell us a little bit about that.

  • Basically, the mega down I'm working on right now is called black metal terrorists.

  • And I'm drawing basically the main character of it right now.

  • Do names Octavius Davies Jones Jr.

  • But you just called O j.

  • His character's somebody who's trying to start robots from light just taking over the whole planet.

  • Shit, because it's like a post apocalyptic future.

  • That the end right now, you know, me being a fan, anime.

  • And just like coming up with stories my whole life and the way I do my albums, I wanted to be, like a story that people are gonna be like, getting excited over.

  • I'm loving the way.

  • All right, so now we move on, so sees, like, you know, like, e o u mass.

  • That kind of Yeah, exactly.

  • Being in a foot.

  • Very excited now.

  • And maybe we can just put like a punk.

  • Are there any anime or manga that kind of stick out to you in regards to how well, they anime and depict food?

  • I personally like like, Ghibli Way.

  • Yeah, Jimmy Lee.

  • I mean, they whatever.

  • They just make a special, like a bad.

  • Yeah, even like sound.

  • Yeah, the way a pancake in ah kick its delivery service.

  • Yeah, so definitely making me hungry.

  • Way gonna try to go back and make this woman I look super wanted to be that.

  • All right.

  • So now usually the cute one organized is We're gonna you know, they put the way, so maybe we can just roll killed Capt face.

  • Yes.

  • Perfect cat.

  • Yeah.

  • Okay.

  • All right.

  • So now almost done doing that just to quickly.

  • Maybe speech.

  • Yes.

  • OK, yes.

  • And then let's say always she Oh, yeah, the perfect sound like, Oh, she it's like, Oh, shit, It's way.

  • Yeah, I had a draw Manga.

  • While Denzel finishes his drawing me cycle and I are ready for lunch at high collar, where some iconic, animate dishes have found their way onto the menu.

  • We're meeting the hilarious comedian Zach Fox and a Grammy Award winning musician.

  • Thundercats.

  • Together Zach and Thundercats are two of the biggest enemy junkies I know and the perfect people to share a cartoon themed feast with Hi, guys.

  • Thank you so much for joining me today.

  • We're here at high collar, which is my friend.

  • Socko does restaurant where they serve some iconic dishes that you see popping up in and me all the time.

  • And our first dish is over Rice.

  • Have you ever seen an anime?

  • I remember, like like a lot of food.

  • What stuff?

  • Flying every year.

  • Just like it looks so you like, watch, animate and goto.

  • So here at high collar, they mix tomato based fried rice with bacon, and then they top in when anomaly egg, which is generally how it's done in Japan as well.

  • It normally comes dressed in ketchup.

  • It's treated a lot like lot aren't is where it's just kind of dependent on your chef, depending on what kind of restaurant urine and specifically asked for the ketchup bottle so we could make our own.

  • Memories are perfect.

  • Like to draw Theo isn't exactly you like it.

  • I literally always alone.

  • I wander the forest, then slip into another realm like, Why can't that happen?

  • One of me blowing up in Atlanta like about culture but seeing like the influence constantly flooded with that specifically African American culture and a lot of even pop culture in Japan.

  • There's a very big connecting thing that happens.

  • My honest opinion about it is it has to do with relating in such a higher point.

  • It's almost like it is inexplicable, because it is the finer points of whatever that is interesting.

  • You know, everything.

  • There was like definite, like force, bringing you two together.

  • Yeah, I could slap somebody.

  • That good guy.

  • It's only like, bigger.

  • Last year, I would say that like in the main watching black culture became like You know that thing and, like, noted like to get to the point of, you know, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West begging the style is tweeting about and may like you gotta go through like a lot of, like, lowbrow cultural stuff like walking, locking him like suck my drinking big time Go Not to be all like get off my porch when I was in sixth grade Trap music.

  • And then there's, like my chemical romance it.

  • And then there's, you know, there's a devil man and don't swim when I'm watching star way more.

  • All these things just like China, mostly, but they're not on 2016 happens.

  • It's like widespread, like perfect cultures.

  • I'm sorry you're enjoying it, but save some room because we got something.

  • Another iconic Japanese e.

  • Not a survival mode.

  • We have some Japanese style pancakes.

  • Next in Japanese.

  • They actually call it the big pot cakes like a big cake again.

  • A digit rating point Way hockey X you saw in animal like Are there any iconic ones that you remember.

  • I think it might like him, like in like that.

  • Saner definitely saw extensive.

  • It appeals to Children, so that's what makes that way.

  • We're talking about how we saw it, a lot of Jim removed, because they do food so well and especially having like the syrup.

  • It's almost like a device to make it look listening.

  • Yeah, really off the animation for that moment, the attention they paid with food absurd.

  • It's amazing.

  • And I think that's what's so great about animal.

  • Like I know it's considered a cartoon, and obviously it isn't Japan as well.

  • But it's made not for Children.

  • It's made for literally all ages like it's just entertainment, and it doesn't matter that it's drawn.

  • It doesn't necessarily mean it's made for any strange.

  • So that's why you see the level of violence.

  • And then you see something that kind of feels like mothers who stay at home, and I feel like food is such a natural connector with people.

  • It's like the great equalizer.

  • Everybody enjoys food like you gotta you gotta eat and enjoy it.

  • So I feel that anime really learned to capitalize on being like I know what you like.

  • Like eat food.

  • That's good stuff.

  • That's just good.

  • Good enemies.

  • Well, you guys so much for joining us today.

  • Did you enjoy the booth?

  • Is kind of how you'd expect it after seeing in animal like that's probably what it's like.
