  • Hi.

  • She's storing up like Crosser about my journey to find my business.

  • Who's been in across France?

  • Problem where I got came here today, a literal definition of across rouses point where two roads intersect.

  • Well, I'm actually talking about a point in which a crucial decision needs to be made that will have far reaching consequences.

  • 10 years ago I stay.

  • I too.

  • You have two beautiful Children, Tyler.

  • America was in college.

  • Eric was in high school and a beautiful dog meat imports in your life at a mayor 25 years.

  • He was a real tragedy for me.

  • What happens in the tragedy is it doesn't necessarily kill you, but it can feel as though you're hard to stop.

  • This story is about moments where my heart was started again.

  • Erica, in high school was someone who experienced exactly like my most hospital students.

  • She found that you are using It helped her address some of those issues so she wouldn't be playing car writing songs.

  • And she was, you know, this was a very important she asked which we together and he said yes and I bought her for Christmas and acoustic Martin carnage is a beautiful guitar.

  • She and I spend once a week.

  • I picked her up from school and go out to dinner.

  • And then you go to accent music and she would have guitar lessons.

  • This was incredibly important time for me.

  • It helped me deal with my anxieties as well as helping her get through.

  • So what I think And she says to me, Mom like, Talk is broken back this way.

  • That can't possibly It's a market guitar can't possibly so immediately go to Mom Obama.

  • So those you know me, you know that I'm on the phone access to Martin guitar.

  • They're saying, No problem, no problem.

  • We'll take it back.

  • Just bring it over to Asa's Music field.

  • Strip it off.

  • So I get to accent music and I'm telling them you have to send this off right away.

  • We need another guitar.

  • There will no way don't have loners to give you.

  • And I looked at them.

  • I said, What do you mean?

  • You don't have a lot to get?

  • That's not acceptable.

  • She means the guitar she means to create.

  • She needs to be doing this.

  • This is so important.

  • So I hear this voice all of a sudden background go.

  • I get bored, you can borrow.

  • And I looked up when I didn't know what that very moment in time is that I was at my first really big prospects.

  • I was meeting for the first time Jerry Hubble, who was going to become my business partner for gaming adventures.

  • I was really taken back.

  • His niceness, who does that loves things out to total strangers.

  • But he did, and so we have a guitar that will allow it to continue on her journey.

  • So I just said, That's it.

  • You know, I think Jerry, maybe give him a box or whatever, but they got to know.

  • I got to spend some time every week getting to know that he is a musician.

  • He is a songwriter and, like me, was lost in, so have a great idea.

  • They could come to my house and start working there, and he could teach her how to write a song.

  • So the first couple of times came over.

  • I will say it was quite entertaining to watch, to say the least, but it became more successful after awhile, and Jeremy taught Erica that you write a song about just about anything.

  • You could write a song about a spot on the wall and that's it every day for two weeks to visit a friend.

  • And then she came back.

  • She said, I want to write a song and I want to incorporate all the slime I heard in England.

  • Anybody explaining angle?

  • There's a long There's a lot you don't sound like we have Jenny set down and they created this first song Hold a proper right.

  • I was thinking of sure.

  • So they ripped out this song proper right, which was amazing.

  • What happened from that was that all kinds of things started to blossom.

  • Eric and Christine, her very best friend to this day.

  • Other people came to my house.

  • People started singing and writing music.

  • My house became an incubator of creativity.

  • My heart that started again.

  • It was amazing.

  • So I started doing this.

  • I asked Jeremy to find a baby for them to perform because you have You're Dios music here, your house and you know it's time to bring it out into the world.

  • And so he went out and there were no you know that scored 15 year old girls wanted to sing original music because they hadn't been quite a few original Selves.

  • There's no place to go.

  • So like any good mother, what do you do?

  • You fix it.

  • So I created a Then I went to the Centre for Creative Arts in York, Delaware.

  • Anybody knows of that place?

  • It's pretty amazing.

  • I rented the auditorium.

  • Jerry and I hired some guy on way Put a Light Together, featuring Aaron and Christine that were affectionately known now as Aristide, and the First York showcase was born first.

  • It was so much fun.

  • Over 100 people came out to this event on.

  • I knew at the end of this I found something Wait, I could put on a concert.

  • I never even thought that was within my grill of things to do.

  • So I'm thinking about this.

  • After this event, people came up to me in the community and said, Get you need to do this again.

  • We need a platform for kids.

  • We need show, be able to showcase his creativity.

  • I do that.

  • I'm thinking about thinking about this and in the middle of this, almost thinking that's going out of my brain.

  • Jeremy decides that he's moving back to California, not back.

  • He's moving to California with his writing partner, Stephen.

  • He's going to go find the very thing that I started to think about.

  • I was gonna create in Wilmington a scene for original music.

  • So I just said he left.

  • But I didn't stop thinking process and they started putting down on paper.

  • I thought, I mean a conduit to the music community.

  • I thought, I'm a musician, believe I don't play.

  • But you did, and I let me let me call him up and see if he would like to consider working on Spaces with May.

  • So hold on, we start talking about it and I said, Well, we need to just work on a face to face So it was January in Delaware and I got to go to San Diego because who wants to talk in Delaware when it's raining?

  • And we spent a couple days walking and talking about what we emission this business to look like, How could how could work and we knew it was gonna be a challenge.

  • So we decided that thing's gonna come back in a few months, and we're going to incorporate launched this business, which, by the way, is a combination of our names.

  • Gail in heaven, that's on cable.

  • The name table music venture started.

  • So on the way back from California, I got you know, it's that long.

  • Right back.

  • It's high hours.

  • You usually get talking to you.

  • Ever since you and I started talking to this guy and his name's Andre and he's a painter and I don't know anything else about live wherever.

  • And he asked me.

  • He said, What do you do?

  • I said, I'm starting a business and I was really excited about that.

  • I was so excited that I went on.

  • I'm going to showcase emerging yards with your original music and I'm going to Delaware and it's gonna be awesome.

  • He looked at me and he said, Yeah, when you talk, you are saying top of that shop again because I realized it had been so long since I saying about it was my validation that I was walking down, right?

  • Jimmy was back on our first show, and to say that it was not successful would be an understatement.

  • First year, in fact, wasa Siri's challenges.

  • Anybody who is in this room that has started a business knows that it is talk to do.

  • You make a lot of mistakes.

  • You try and learn from them.

  • Sometimes you learn something trying to make the same mistakes twice.

  • It was very challenge, but we're both very stubborn, and we could see the vision we could keep seeing what we wanted to do.

  • Mike Schwartz, guy who owns the real estate on Lower Market Street, which is second on Market Street, came to us in 2012.

  • He's the owner of the commercial residential property in this area.

  • We have been doing these little pop up shows down there, and he said to me, I want to do I want a block party Do thank you for everybody that's moved into this area.

  • I'm gonna give you a little bit of money.

  • What can you do?

  • So at the same time, some of you will remember that Firefly was announced coming to Delaware, coming to Dover, Del.

  • Of all places and itwas a huge day.

  • People were excited about it, but there was no one on No one.

  • Lowly was on that line.

  • So Jerry, I kind of put our hands together Okay, we're gonna figure out how to get that money.

  • It's going down to Dover, Delaware, for this giant festival to stop before we're gonna do this on a Thursday.

  • So we started poking fun at, say, and I realized the name that I really like the most was Lady, and at the time we did not know is stable door.

  • We said, Let's call Lady Book testable and let's make it about winning.

  • We hired 20 women to before.

  • There's 1/3 Thursday in July and it was born 3 400 people came out.

  • It wa ce amazing experience, to say the least.

  • That event has become a catalyst for my business.

  • It now represents hundreds, and hundreds of women would come to Delaware to before it grew exponentially over the years where tens of thousands of people have come out to see this, to see the women before May markets.

  • It's been remarkable.

  • It's been an incredible journey, to say the least, So we are.

  • We are incredibly fortunate.

  • I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have a business that has impacted so many lives, and if someone told me nine years ago that I would be standing here doing a Ted talk, talking about how this is how stepping into crossroads, how finding this lifeline that God through me at some point to say Here, I'm telling you, back to the world I'm gonna give you this opportunity to do something with it.

  • Somebody said that nine years ago.

  • I just said you were crazy.

  • I would never have thought about doing something like that.

  • I never would have thought of taking a step at a crossroads that would have been in a different direction than the one I was.

  • I thought I was going to always be taking the safe route.

  • The kids, the house borders the dog.

  • I never thought I'd do something else, and I've inspired people.

  • Musicians to write music before helped spark new relationships, and it sparked my heart as well.

  • So, one of the final things that won't leave you where is a bit of inspiration to try that next step change crossroads.

  • Very, very intimidating.

  • They be daunting, and it starts with that first step, And what's important to remember is that everyone feels depressed, angry, frustrated at times.

  • It's a prosperous, not a dentist.
