  • Hi, I'm Joachim Ronning, and I'm the director of 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.'

  • What was important for me in telling the next chapter of Maleficent was to continue exploring the relationship between Aurora and Maleficent.

  • I think that the lot of... at least my fascination with Maleficent is that she's unpredictable.

  • I thought it was interesting to explore how she would react being a mother of a daughter that is about to move out.

  • "Phillip asked me to marry him."

  • "Poor thing. He'll recover."

  • "My answer was yes."

  • "No."

  • "Yes."

  • "No."

  • "I wasn't really asking."

  • "Nor was I."

  • "What's next? You'll turn him into a goat?"

  • And of course, she's fighting it with all she has.

  • And at the same time, it's such an important part of the movie, you know, their emotional core.

  • So the scene was very, very important to show the tenderness between them.

  • "Love doesn't always end well, Beastie."

  • And of course, all this is shot inside on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios outside of London, and so everything you see here going into this, this is all computer animated.

  • We spent a long time researching that and designing this world.

  • And of course, using the first film as a template and an inspiration, I think we still wanted to take it to the next level.

  • And of course, for me as a film director, that's what I want to do.

  • I want to try to create something original.

  • "You want me to meet his parents?"

  • I think in this case, although it is a fairy tale, I wanted to try and somehow make it feel a tad more real, a tad more relatable than probably the first film.

  • "Please."
