To make our own Thanksgiving meal

What do you guys usually have for Thanksgiving in the States?

Mine is like a special

With my family kind of tradition

We buy KFC and then we just all eat it at home

I don't know if it's like Asian-American

Or just our own family tradition

What about Meaghan?

Okay, with my family, it's a

A bit more traditional I think

We get this giant turkey

And then we also have mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green bean casserole

For dessert, we have pumpkin pie and cheese cake

Oh, and croissants, I forgot

Croissants

But that's not a traditional thing

I think that's like your family

So for you it's KFC

For Meaghan it's croissants

Yeah, yeah, there you go

So, today we're going to make our own Thanksgiving meal (dinner)

We're not going for everything

We don't have six hours

And we're gonna change a little bit

We're not gonna use turkey, we're gonna use chicken

We're going to head into the kitchen and start the preparations

We're gonna start with the chicken first and then Pierre's gonna

I'm gonna help with the chicken

Meaghan's gonna do the mashed potatoes

I'll be the filmographer

I'll be in charge of the camera

You are teaching me cuz I don't know anything

Like, how to prepare this at all

First step is to marinate the chicken (Alright)

We gotta prepare the sauce

First is the soy sauce

I can do this

Pro, one

But your hands are kinda shaking

I'm nervous, I'm so nervous, I don't know how to make food

Next is, the wine (the wine)

Next we have the sugar (Okay)

Are your sure we just want three, I mean

If you're eating this, I feel like we should at least put like

The whole bag

Pepper

It doesn't matter how good it tastes

It just has to look good (yeah)

And now, we're gonna pour it onto the kitchen

The kitchen? Alright

Chicken

Pour it onto the chicken

Hey, did you do that back and forth just so you could cut it?

Guys, this is going in anyway

Evenly, spread it evenly

I'm so nervous

Yeah, just pour it down, yeah

You're doing great

And now we're gonna massage it

Oh hey, she likes it

Now we're gonna cut the stuffing for inside the chicken

We're gonna cut everything here

Carrot, onion, bell peppers, lemon grass

Preheating the oven

I've cut onions before and they made me cry, oh god

So, our stuffing is done

It's actually the first time I've ever stuffed

Last step is to put the butter

Bertha? That's really good

Okay

Alright Bertha, let's go, we're going for a walk now, let's go

Get cozy in there

We're using 220 degree Celsius for 20 minutes (Okay)

Okay, so next up is our mashed potatoes

Yes

Did you want me to make the mashed potatoes because I'm Irish?

No, but I'm sure (not racist)

No, not intentional, yup

Back to my natural job

We're gonna put the whole thing inside

Add a little bit of salt with water and then we'll cook it

We could always spill two spoons but we can go for four

Okay so now our potatoes are cooked and we're gonna strain it

So that we get all the water out

Ooh it looks so good

They smell so good oh my god

A little bit, just like

Just a little bit more

These two

Just eating away at our mashed potato

So mashed potato is done

Okay, we're all done here

How long did we take

Like six, or seven

We've been here for like days

I think more like two hours or so

About two hours (yeah, about two hours)

We've readied the chicken, mashed potatoes, pumpkin

Just for decoration

Now we're gonna head on into that room and let's talk about Thanksgiving

So, we're back here

Ta-da (Thanksgiving dinner)

A table full of food

Just to be clear, we made all this

All of it

This and this, homemade

All of it, even the coke, we made it

I prepared it

You know, actually, I'm a pescatarian

Oh yeah

So I can't have any of these

This is my only dish

You know what

It probably knows how to swim

So that's like fish (yeah)

But pescatarian means that you could eat

You can't eat meat unless it's seafood

Yeah

Or chicken

Yeah, you look up pescatarian

I'm just joking

You can just try the mashed potatoes

Oh, it's good (yeah?)

It's good

Do you want some gravy?

Yeah

Thanksgiving, do you guys usually come together the day before?

We have the main thing the day of

But like, for school, we're off

Yeah, work is closed usually on Thanksgiving Day as well

Okay

And this huge sale starting at midnight usually

The day of Thanksgiving

So it's a Thursday

It's called Black Friday

Right?

You just kinda really jumped to the......

Oh I'm sorry, yeah

Start over, start over, go, go

And so people usually like start lining up

Like they'll eat dinner or something maybe at like 3 in the afternoon

It's crazy what ends up happening

I've never been to it

So Thursday we have off for school and work

And then the following Friday

Thanksgiving is not on a specific date

It's on the third Thursday

So it changes every year

Yeah, it changes its date every year

So it's not like Halloween where it's like October 31st

Yeah, so it's always Thursday, Friday off and then

Long weekends, Saturday and Sunday

How is Thanksgiving compared to

Say, Christmas

For my family

Well, Christmas in the States is a lot bigger

We'll have off like a month for Christmas and New Years

For my family in particular, specifically with the food

Usually we'll have a turkey and a ham

But pretty much everything else is the same

For Christmas though, you give presents

Yeah, more presents

And Christmas tree

Yes, and Christmas tree

If you missed a Thanksgiving, is that a big deal in the family?

Like with me being here,my family's always pretty sad that I'm not there

And for Thanksgiving, the main thing you do

Like a reason for it now is like you give thanks

Like, that's why it's called Thanksgiving

Thankful for and people usually go around and say what they are thankful for that year

Well at least with my mom

She'll go I'm thankful that all of you are here to celebrate with us

Don't cry

Except for Meaghan

What made that difference

Is it religious reasons?

No

Why is Christmas more

I think it's just because a lot more people get more time off

So everyone could be together

Yeah, it's more like the country

Thanksgiving, if you're not religious, what do you do when it's your time to go around giving thanks

Well Thanksgiving is not really a religious holiday

Oh, it's not?

No, Christmas is a religious holiday

Thanksgiving is the pilgrims from England

They travel to America to settle

They didn't know how to survive

And then the Indians taught them how to plant crops

And then after the harvest they had like a big meal to give thanks to the people who taught them

What we learned in school was Christopher Columbus in 1492 (No)

Isn't that that one?

No! No!

Am I just mixing stuff up (Yeah)

And then they're like, they're like

Oh, hey thank you oh

And the Native Americans were there giving them corn (He's a bad student)

Clearly a bad student

What do you guys like most about Thanksgiving

All the food

Yeah, the food

All the food

Well Thanksgiving is very food-focused

So usually after you eat you're just like

Everyone takes a nap

Food. Rest

Yeah, that's it

I think Thanksgiving is really different here in Taiwan

Yeah, how is it like here

It's more of a I think commercial thing now

Department stores, you know, they will open up shops with banner saying

Oh it's Thanksgiving sale

And a lot of Taiwanese they mistake Halloween with Thanksgiving

They kinda mixed them together because of the pumpkin, yeah

To wrap up, let's just talk about the food that we made

Not bad

I have to say we did pretty well

We did good (yeah)

Mashed potatoes' really good

Yeah, the mashed potatoes and the chicken is also really good

Yeah the chicken is really good, I did not taste it

It looks good

This actually took a little bit longer than I thought it would
