  • What do you desire? What makes you itch? What sort of a situation would you like?

  • Let's suppose, and I do this often in vocational guidance of students,

  • they come to me and say "we're getting out of college and we haven't the faintest idea of what we want to do".

  • So I always ask the question, "what would you like to do if money were no object?

  • How would you really enjoy spending your life?"

  • When we finally got down to something which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him "you do that, and,

  • forget the money". Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing

  • you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will be doing things you don't like

  • doing in order to go on living that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid.

  • Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way

  • You've got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life

  • and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and

  • the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

  • If you haven't found it yet keep looking and don't settle.

  • You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.

  • So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust

  • in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever, because believing that the dots

  • will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when

  • it leads you off the well worn path and that will make all the difference.

  • Now of course people ask me all the time, they say to me "what is the secret to success?".

  • The first rule is, trust yourself. What I mean by that is so many young people are getting

  • so much advice from their parents and from their teachers and from everyone but what

  • is most important is that you have to dig deep down, dig deep down and ask yourself

  • "who do you want to be?" Not what but who. I'm talking about not what your parents and

  • teachers want you to be but you, I'm talking about figuring our for yourselves what makes

  • you happy? No matter how crazy it may sound to other people. So rule number one is of

  • course trust yourself no matter what anyone else thinks.

  • What s it that gives your life a sense of meaning and purpose? See if you know what

  • your life's work is I encourage you to start working on it. I'm not saying quit your job

  • I'm saying find it and do just a little bit of it. When I wanted to become involved in

  • speaking I started out just talking to kids. Now I'm speaking at corporations. Now I'm

  • travelling. I didn't know I could do this if I had not given myself a chance. I'm saying

  • to you "give yourself a chance". If you don't know what it is that you showed up to do,

  • if you don't know why you're here, I encourage you to find out what your purpose is here,

  • what is the meaning of your life? When you have not structured your life so that it can have some meaning

  • and value for you, you'll be willing to throw your life away into anything. It could be

  • a job that does not meet who you are. You go through life and you have been doing it

  • for so long, you're operating in this and you're acting out that role of mediocrity

  • for so long you think it's you. If your doing something eight hours a day that you don't

  • like, it's not giving you what you want, it's not giving you a strong feeling of satisfaction

  • and fulfillment, if that's what it is then you owe it to yourself to start strategically

  • working to change direction.

  • Most people are not living their dreams because of fear ladies and gentlemen.

  • You're gonna make some mistakes. The person who has never made a mistake hasn't done anything.

  • The fear of loss is another thing. Many of us don't act because we want other peoples approval.

  • We want everybody to like us and to accept us, and that's not possible. There's some

  • necessary losses in life. When you decide to act in your best interest you're gonna

  • lose some friends. Everybody is not going to approve of you. So what I'm saying to you

  • is that as you begin to look out on your life, this is challenging, this is not easy, acting.

  • Have you resigned yourself to a life feeling that nothing can be done to change your future

  • or your circumstances? Have you been afraid to try something different because you are

  • afraid of how people will react to you or what they will think?

  • See that's how most people are spectators in life. You don't want to be a spectator.

  • You want to get out in the field where the action is and you will be amazed,

  • after the struggle there will be a calm period and things will begin to click for you. Come out here

  • with what you got, you don't have enough money? Don't worry about it you've got the dream.

  • You need some help? Don't worry about it, you get out here in the arena someone will

  • look at you and become inspired and say "hey can I help you?" but if you're sitting up

  • on the bleachers nobody is going to ask you anything. Many of us have genius within us

  • but when it comes to us, when it comes to using our genius in our own behalf, taking

  • a chance with our own creativeness, acting on our own dreams and ideas, somewhere along

  • the line we get paralyzed. We find some reason not to do it. You don't need anybody to approve

  • your dream it was given to you if they can't see it it's because it wasn't given to them,

  • it was given to you. Hold it, nourish it, cultivate it, work on it it's yours it's your

  • baby. Work on it until it comes into fruition.

  • You might appear to be strange around most people.

  • Let me tell you something, what people think about you and the possibilities for

  • your dream is none of your business, that's their business.

  • Live your life now!

  • Live your dreams now!

  • Start acting like this is your last day on the planet.
