Subtitles section Play video Print subtitles What do you desire? What makes you itch? What sort of a situation would you like? Let's suppose, and I do this often in vocational guidance of students, they come to me and say "we're getting out of college and we haven't the faintest idea of what we want to do". So I always ask the question, "what would you like to do if money were no object? How would you really enjoy spending your life?" When we finally got down to something which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him "you do that, and, forget the money". Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid. Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way You've got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet keep looking and don't settle. You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever, because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path and that will make all the difference. Now of course people ask me all the time, they say to me "what is the secret to success?". The first rule is, trust yourself. What I mean by that is so many young people are getting so much advice from their parents and from their teachers and from everyone but what is most important is that you have to dig deep down, dig deep down and ask yourself "who do you want to be?" Not what but who. I'm talking about not what your parents and teachers want you to be but you, I'm talking about figuring our for yourselves what makes you happy? No matter how crazy it may sound to other people. So rule number one is of course trust yourself no matter what anyone else thinks. What s it that gives your life a sense of meaning and purpose? See if you know what your life's work is I encourage you to start working on it. I'm not saying quit your job I'm saying find it and do just a little bit of it. When I wanted to become involved in speaking I started out just talking to kids. Now I'm speaking at corporations. Now I'm travelling. I didn't know I could do this if I had not given myself a chance. I'm saying to you "give yourself a chance". If you don't know what it is that you showed up to do, if you don't know why you're here, I encourage you to find out what your purpose is here, what is the meaning of your life? When you have not structured your life so that it can have some meaning and value for you, you'll be willing to throw your life away into anything. It could be a job that does not meet who you are. You go through life and you have been doing it for so long, you're operating in this and you're acting out that role of mediocrity for so long you think it's you. If your doing something eight hours a day that you don't like, it's not giving you what you want, it's not giving you a strong feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment, if that's what it is then you owe it to yourself to start strategically working to change direction. Most people are not living their dreams because of fear ladies and gentlemen. You're gonna make some mistakes. The person who has never made a mistake hasn't done anything. The fear of loss is another thing. Many of us don't act because we want other peoples approval. We want everybody to like us and to accept us, and that's not possible. There's some necessary losses in life. When you decide to act in your best interest you're gonna lose some friends. Everybody is not going to approve of you. So what I'm saying to you is that as you begin to look out on your life, this is challenging, this is not easy, acting. Have you resigned yourself to a life feeling that nothing can be done to change your future or your circumstances? Have you been afraid to try something different because you are afraid of how people will react to you or what they will think? See that's how most people are spectators in life. You don't want to be a spectator. You want to get out in the field where the action is and you will be amazed, after the struggle there will be a calm period and things will begin to click for you. Come out here with what you got, you don't have enough money? Don't worry about it you've got the dream. You need some help? Don't worry about it, you get out here in the arena someone will look at you and become inspired and say "hey can I help you?" but if you're sitting up on the bleachers nobody is going to ask you anything. Many of us have genius within us but when it comes to us, when it comes to using our genius in our own behalf, taking a chance with our own creativeness, acting on our own dreams and ideas, somewhere along the line we get paralyzed. We find some reason not to do it. You don't need anybody to approve your dream it was given to you if they can't see it it's because it wasn't given to them, it was given to you. Hold it, nourish it, cultivate it, work on it it's yours it's your baby. Work on it until it comes into fruition. You might appear to be strange around most people. Let me tell you something, what people think about you and the possibilities for your dream is none of your business, that's their business. Live your life now! Live your dreams now! Start acting like this is your last day on the planet.
