  • in 21 years covering Bill Belichick.

  • I don't think you can rule anything out.

  • And something caught my eye from last Friday.

  • The Patriots, where one of 17 teams at Trevor Lawrence is pro day.

  • Now they're not going to get Trevor Lawrence.

  • But here's why.

  • That stood out to me.

  • It tells me that they are all in on the draft.

  • Quarterbacks compare that to when Andrew Luck was coming out of the draft in 2012 and Belichick said, didn't even bother to scout him because we knew it wasn't realistic.

  • What they want to do is get the biggest full picture of all the quarterbacks comparing them so they could make the best decision if they do go that way in the draft.

  • Okay, so it's interesting to me.

  • So there are a lot of names here that my crew in, But Mike, I'm gonna keep you with us here and we'll bring you into the conversation.

  • But let me get the gang in here so we could talk about this a little bit Part and Ginko, the former Patriot and Mike Tannenbaum.

  • It feels to me like there were three really interesting names in all of this Mike Tannenbaum.

  • One of them is Cam Newton.

  • The possibility of bringing him back and saying, You know what?

  • There were a lot of reasons why that didn't work.

  • He had no off season.

  • Maybe that's a possibility.

  • Mac Jones is another name that people are going to associate him with their and because Mike Reiss couldn't hear me.

  • I didn't want to ask him a question in case he couldn't.

  • But in his column he mentions the name Marcus Mariota as a possibility of someone that the Patriots he could see potentially bringing in along with Jimmy Garoppolo off those options.

  • Mike T.

  • Which do you think knowing Belichick, as you do seems the likeliest?

  • Yeah, Coach Bell check is always gonna think long term.

  • And that's why I think it's gonna be Mac Jones.

  • And, in my opinion, he's gonna have to trade up above Carolina at eight to go get Mac Jones.

  • Matt Rule coach Mac Jones, the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in the Senior Bowl.

  • He loved them, I think.

  • The sweet spot to get Mac Jones a seven and I work for Coach Belichick twice and one of his many superpowers greeny is he doesn't care.

  • He's dispassionate, and he's always gonna think long term.

  • So while the rest of us will think from a human nature standpoint, Brady 11 there's a sense of urgency.

  • He's always gonna think long term.

  • And Mac Jones gives him the best chance toe win over over again long term.

  • And that's what I think.

  • They dio interesting perspective.

  • So, Mike T.

  • You worked for him, Rob Ninkovich.

  • You played for him.

  • What is your sense of the likeliest route that Bill goes now?

  • Looking at the quarterback, looking at Brady down there with another ring and who knows how many still to come?

  • What do you think Bill does?

  • I think Bill comes calls up Dr Mac Emmett Brown and he says, Hey, can I borrow the DeLorean?

  • I wanna go back to 2001 when I had a young quarterback and a great defense, because the Patriots, in six of their Super Bowls had a top 10 defense.

  • So if you go out and you draft a young quarterback before Tom Brady was the goat, they had a great defense, a veteran defense with a pass rush in great corners.

  • So they could take the money that they have in the salary cap.

  • They could go out and they can grab some studs on defense, create one another great defense and iconic defense.

  • Get a young quarterback like Mac and go out there and win win win football games.

  • They might not be blowouts, but in 2001, they weren't blowing people out there win with defense.

  • So I think that Bill might go back in time and try and rebuild his defense first and then move forward with a young quarterback.

  • I like that.

  • Let me get Bart in here, Bart.

  • What do you think?

  • Well, he could go back in the hot tub time machine and all he wants.

  • But guess what?

  • When he comes back with that great defense, he's gonna be in the future and the future of offense.

  • That's how you win in this league.

  • Yes, you win championships of defense.

  • But how crazy is this?

  • Last year, they were telling us that Jared Stein was the guy.

  • What happened to that guy?

  • And I think that you think about Cam Newton.

  • I think Cam Newton feels more comfortable going back with Ron Rivera in Washington when he looks at that team was a playoff team in the division in which they don't have anybody, that's a viable threat.

  • We don't know who's gonna play quarterback within that division.

  • So you look at you know it's crazy that the New England Patriots are the team with money that nobody wants to take, because if I'm a receiver, I'm looking at all my other options because I don't know who's gonna throw me the football.

  • I think Marcus Mariota, maybe the best chance they have a re trade, a bridge quarterback, even if they're going to bring in a guy like Mac Jones, because this guy's isn't ready to be thrown to the Wolves.

  • I know he went with Nick Saban, but that doesn't mean he's ready for the big time, you know.

  • So I think you know you think about the Patriots and how ironic it is that Jared Stein was the guy.

  • Now he's not the guy and how they have to win with defense, but they have a aging old roster.

  • You think about the McCourty twins.

  • There's 33 years old greeny.

  • They have to start a rebuild in the division when everybody has a young quarterback rather than Jets.

  • Hold on the sand, Donald or not.

  • Let me bring Reach back into the conversation, Mike, assuming you can hear me because there to veterans that you have brought up multiple times one was Mario Tha And the other, of course, is Jimmy G.

  • Give us a quick rundown on the likelihood or the way those things could happen, if that's what Bill wants.

  • Definitely greeny.

  • I think if you contrast it, I mean Jimmy G.

  • Is San Francisco even going to be willing to trade him?

  • Mariota?

  • Why, it's, um, or realistic option is they have Derek Carr, and Mariota is sort of makes their salary cap situation tight.

  • And Mike Mayock, their general manager, says, We need to improve our defense.

  • We don't have a game breaking player on defense who can alter the game.

  • So there could be motivation for them to trade Mario to get that cap space to improve another part of their team and the Patriots have the quarterback need Mario to could be the perfect bridge.

  • Okay, that's a really interesting one.
