  • -My first guest tonight is an Emmy-winning comedian

  • who you know from "Saturday Night Live."

  • He's also starring in his own sitcom called "Kenan."

  • It premieres Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. on NBC.

  • Here he is, Kenan Thompson.

  • Yeah, Kenan!

  • Hey, you know what? I love you, buddy.

  • -What's up, man? -Dude, everyone loves you.

  • I was at my dentist this morning, and he said,

  • "Who do you have on the show?" I said, "Kenan Thompson."

  • He just started laughing

  • and, like, banging on the counter.

  • And I go, he's like, "He's so funny."

  • I go, "Also --" -Take it easy.

  • -Yeah. Hello. -Yeah, Take it easy,

  • Dr. -- What's his name? Chip Richards?

  • -His name is Chip Grossman. -Dr. Chip Richards. Yeah.

  • -Tooth-Chip Grossman, yeah.

  • -Yeah, Tooth-Chip Grossman.

  • -But, dude, we're talking, but he's like,

  • "Yeah, I know him from 'Kenan and Kel.'"

  • And then, everyone's got a story about you.

  • I don't know if you've heard about this, but Daniel Kaluuya

  • was on the show this week, like two days ago,

  • and said that you inspired his first play.

  • He wrote a play based off of you.

  • -That's crazy.

  • Daniel, my man from "Black Mirror" and "Get Out"

  • and "Black Panther"?

  • -And "Black Panther" and another "Black Panther."

  • -And "Judas and the Black Messiah"? Come on.

  • -Double "Black Panther."

  • -That's crazy. I mean, I don't --

  • Yeah, I don't know. That -- That's flabbergasting.

  • It's weird, you know? I mean, you just work,

  • and you never really know how it's affecting people.

  • So, I'm over the moon to hear that, I guess. I don't know.

  • -But is there not like a generation of celebrities

  • who, like, fan out when they meet you?

  • -Yeah, I guess so.

  • I mean, I guess I've raised some good ones out there

  • on my shows, you know what I'm sayin'?

  • -Yeah, not too shabby.

  • -Some good up-and-comers coming up,

  • watching my stuff, I guess. I don't know, man.

  • I mean, it's weird, 'cause in the beginning,

  • like, nobody noticed like I thought they would.

  • Like, right after "The Mighty Ducks" or whatever,

  • I was like, "Oh, they'll know me,

  • 'cause I'm now in 'The Mighty Ducks,'

  • and I will wear my jersey," you know.

  • -You'd wear the jersey?

  • -Yeah, I got to keep the jersey, so I would just wear it around

  • like, "Yeah, I'm in the movie."

  • They would ask me like, "Where'd you get that jersey from?"

  • I was like, "I'm in the movie." They're like, "No, you weren't."

  • And then they would just walk away in the conversation there.

  • So... -Did I ever tell you that story

  • where I got a Weekend Update jacket?

  • -No. What happened? -Dude, I had a jacket

  • made for me by --

  • Like, a leather jacket, and it was almost like --

  • And I had them embroider Weekend Update on the side.

  • And I go --

  • -And everybody was like, "Come on."

  • -Kind of, but then I go, "I can't wear it."

  • And then I go, "I'll wear it out.

  • Who's going to -- No one will care.

  • No one is going to read it that up-close, you know?

  • It was, like, in cursive.

  • And the first time I wore it, I went outside,

  • and I ran into Ethan Hawke, and I go, "Hey, man."

  • He goes, "Uh, wow."

  • Good for you, man." I was like,

  • Oh, my gosh." It was the first day I wore it.

  • But he totally busted me.

  • I gave him that jacket.

  • -Not a sports coat, a leather jacket.

  • -It was a leather sports --

  • It was like a leather blazer almost.

  • -[ Chuckles ] -That's wild, man.

  • And you have your own sitcom.

  • Let's talk about this. -Yes.

  • Yeah, that's -- I guess that's why I'm here.

  • -That's why you're here. Your sitcom premieres Tuesday.

  • -Let's talk about that. Yes.

  • -But you -- You're doing promotion for it.

  • It's on Tuesday. I see "Kenan" everywhere.

  • You really are. I mean, you're all over the place.

  • Is it odd to see just your name all over the place?

  • -Yeah. I'm kind of on blast right now.

  • -You really are.

  • -You know me. I'm way more, like, reserved and mellow

  • and kind of, you know, turtle-shelly a little bit.

  • But this is like a full frontal, you know what I'm saying?

  • So, I'm showing everybody the full fronts, baby.

  • -"Kenan," "Kenan," this Tuesday, this Tuesday, this Tuesday.

  • But that's good.

  • That's what you have to do, man, to make the show work.

  • -Yeah, no doubt. -Was it always called "Kenan"?

  • -No, it was called like four different things.

  • It was like "Saving Larry" at first.

  • I was going to be Larry Biskowitz,

  • and that was going to be a stretch for people to,

  • you know, kind of go along with, I guess.

  • -Dude, Larry Biskowitz, no way.

  • You have to put that in the show somewhere, dude.

  • I will play Larry Biskowitz, your neighbor.

  • -Yeah, of course. We're going to write that.

  • We're gonna. If we get Season 2, we're gonna write you.

  • You're coming in.

  • "Oh, I guess that's our neighbor, Larry Biskowitz,

  • at the door. Let me see --"

  • -It's like, "Ugh, you get it.

  • No, you get it. Just tell him we're not --

  • Dude -- Hi, Larry."

  • Then I need, like, a catchphrase.

  • -Yeah.

  • -Oh, you know what?

  • Maybe "ding dong" will be my catchphrase,

  • because once you open the door, I go "Ding dong."

  • -Yeah, no, the door's already open, Larry. Thank you.

  • -Talk to me about the show. What's the setup?

  • You play a widowed father of two young girls.

  • -Yeah. I'm just stuck on Biskowitz right now.

  • It's just bringing me too much joy.

  • Hey, we always got to ask you, how did your wife react

  • when you told her that you're playing

  • a widowed father on the show. She's like --

  • -She didn't love it.

  • [ Both laugh ]

  • -What'd she say?

  • -She was like, "Oh, so I'm dead?"

  • But, I mean, she was just giving me a hard time.

  • But I was like, "Yeah, I mean, it's not you,

  • you know what I mean?

  • It's -- It's a show. It's a different thing."

  • And, yeah, it reflects my life a little bit,

  • like being a father of two girls and stuff like that.

  • But it's totally different.

  • Like, I'm the host of Atlanta's #2 morning show

  • and, like, you know, just trying to balance

  • that work-life relationship and raising my girls

  • without my best friend and partner.

  • And I hadn't really seen that kind of explored

  • in a sitcom before, so that's why we're doing it.

  • -What is it -- Is it like "Kenan and Kel"?

  • What does it remind you of, an SNL sketch?

  • -Totally that. It's totally "Kenan and Kel."

  • like just in one character, you know what I mean,

  • every day, all day.

  • You know, it's my show now,

  • so I'm in pretty much every scene.

  • So it's a lot for me to do.

  • But I'm also surrounded by great people.

  • Don Johnson's playing my father-in-law.

  • Chris Redd's playing my brother. You know what I'm saying?

  • -I'm psyched for you, bud. This Tuesday, man.

  • Set your TiVo. Set your DVR. Set your Betamax.

  • -Set them all. -I want to show everyone a clip.

  • Here is Kenan Thompson in his new sitcom, "Kenan."

  • Take a look.

  • -Oh, maybe just one more hug?

  • You know I'm all about the hug life!

  • [ Girl giggles ]

  • -Aww, just in time for the hug!

  • [ Girls squealing ]

  • -I'm gonna get some of that, too.

  • -Okay, alright, thank you, thank you!

  • What, you just get home?

  • -Yeah, boy, the club was thick, boy!

  • I got nine numbers.

  • She must have left the last one off by accident,

  • but I'll find her.

  • -[ Laughs ] -Hope you do.

  • -Anyway, what'd I miss?

  • -Oh, my God. So much.

  • I was in there sleeping, and I heard a noise --

  • -Hey, man, I'm late for work. We don't have time for that.

  • Gary, you good to drive?

  • -No, but I'm up for the challenge.

  • -Nope. -Bye!

  • -Bye! -Bye!

  • -Kenan Thompson! Kenan and I

  • are playing a game when we come back.

  • Stick around, everybody.
