  • Hi, I'm Ralph Macchio.

  • And I'm William Zabka.

  • And we're going to take you

  • through the winter ball scene,

  • shot by shot.

  • Ah, I've been here five minutes and I already see

  • 10 people I hate. It's Christmastime, all right.

  • Tradition is tradition.

  • Let's just hope Anthony doesn't get kicked

  • out of another sleepover.

  • Well, Santa has a big old bag of coal for him if he does.

  • This scene is the annual winter ball

  • at the country club,

  • and Amanda and Daniel

  • are heading there

  • kind of begrudgingly, but heading out

  • for a nice evening together, which they think

  • would be uneventful.

  • It was tons of extras, tons of food,

  • but none of which you would want to eat,

  • it was all cold chicken and peas, and all that stuff.

  • The drinks looked good, but it was all, you know,

  • of course, colored water, and

  • we had a cool band set up there,

  • and I believe they played some music in between,

  • just for the fun of it.

  • It's Christmastime, all right.

  • I forgot what time of year was this,

  • when we shot this scene?

  • This was before Thanksgiving, right?

  • Because we got done before Thanksgiving,

  • and this was sort of toward the end.

  • So, this scene was shot probably mid-November.

  • There's nothing like movie-making and TV-making

  • and the magic of creating Christmas, off-Christmas season.

  • All the Christmas decorations you see in there

  • were put on by the production, the production designer.

  • We designed that whole area to, you know,

  • have that festive sort of feel,

  • which is sort of not the norm

  • for Cobra Kai, to this point.

  • Cobra Kai and Karate Kid, it's Halloween or bust, right?

  • It's skeletons and shower costumes.

  • So, it was kinda nice to have this festive Christmas-y

  • feeling and this rivalry to play underneath all that.

  • There was also, "December 19th," was the name

  • of this episode.

  • December 19th was the date of the All Valley tournament

  • in the original Karate Kid film.

  • Merry Christmas, Brett.

  • The usual for me and Amanda, thanks.

  • Coming right up.

  • Daniel with an L.

  • Oh, God, Ali, is it really you?

  • I think so.

  • Wow, I was hoping that I would run into you one day.

  • It's funny that it's here though, huh?

  • Yeah, right, right, the kid from Reseda,

  • a member of the club.

  • Yeah, well there's no more sneaking around in the kitchen.

  • I'm sorry I just, you just look great.

  • Ah, thank you, so do you.

  • I'm so happy to see you.

  • Yes.

  • This is post-Ali and Johnny's sort of date

  • at Golf N' Stuff.

  • And Ali has invited Johnny to the winter ball

  • at the country club.

  • I just have so, so many questions.

  • Hey, watch it, I'm wearing white here,

  • you think I want that all over me?

  • Johnny steps in with the white jacket on

  • and a waiter comes by with a red sauce on pasta.

  • And that's a direct callback to The Karate Kid

  • when LaRusso was sneaking around the country club

  • and he had a white shirt on and winds up colliding

  • with the waiter and was doused with red spaghetti sauce.

  • You're seeing a white garment and spaghetti sauce.

  • And it's just the perfect thing for the OG fans

  • who see that Johnny Lawrence will sidestep such an event

  • where LaRusso wound up on his ass

  • covered in spaghetti sauce.

  • It's great that Daniel came in the first time

  • and got spaghetti on him.

  • And now he owns the joint, you know.

  • "Hey John, give me this, give me that."

  • And, I love how the tables are turned.

  • Johnny probably couldn't have got in there

  • unless Ali gave him an invite.

  • You know, he lost his privilege long time ago there.

  • Anytime we can take something,

  • come from a different perspective,

  • something we're all familiar with, but now we're looking

  • at it from this prism or this angle,

  • that is a big part of what works so well with the show.

  • It's part of what makes it special.

  • Johnny, come here.

  • You remember Johnny Lawrence, right?

  • How can I forget?

  • For Johnny, this is the one episode

  • and the previous one where, you know,

  • he was somewhat happy for once, you know.

  • He had the love of his youth came back

  • and kind of sparked him up a little bit.

  • So, he's stepping into this just kind of living

  • almost a little bit in the past.

  • But this is the girl that broke both of their hearts

  • and left both of them or that they, you know,

  • they both loved her at some time.

  • Wow guys, this is a little West Valley reunion, huh?

  • Crazy.

  • Crazy, that is definitely the word for it.

  • That's a nice suit, is that made of velvet?

  • You sleep in that?

  • You should talk there, Scarface.

  • Okay, so I guess this is not the first time

  • you've seen each other since high school.

  • We've had a few run-ins.

  • Just one or two.

  • There's a little bit of that rivalry happening in there.

  • And also Johnny's feeling a little bit like, you know,

  • "This is my girl."

  • But then, you know, Ali turns all that on the head

  • and calls out both of their weaknesses and shortcomings.

  • And all that was so fun to play with Lisa.

  • It was a great scene, we had a lot of fun with this scene.

  • It was just great to play,

  • it was great for the three of us to be back in the game,

  • if you will, and just have that history and chemistry

  • just percolating.

  • I love the immature, youthful gloating that Johnny has

  • for a moment, like kind of rubbing it in Daniel's face,

  • putting his arm around Ali.

  • You know, "This was the girl you stole from me," kind

  • of feeling, "But now she's mine, but she's not mine."

  • And she's, you know, it was a very, very immature moment,

  • which I think is really funny.

  • It's perfect high school.

  • Decades ago and you still have these--

  • Yep.

  • You know, they're bubbling, you know,

  • like it's even happening now.

  • It's just funny, it was great.

  • Thanks so much for going through this scene shot by shot.

  • Watch Cobra Kai on Netflix.
