  • -My first guest is a music icon

  • and a #1 "New York Times" best-selling author.

  • She has sold over 200 million -- Holy ma-- 200 million albums

  • and has had 19 #1 singles throughout her career.

  • Her book, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" is available now,

  • and "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special"

  • is currently streaming on Apple TV Plus.

  • Here is Mariah Carey!

  • Ah, Mariah! -Hi, Jimmy.

  • -Oh, I'm so happy to talk to you.

  • Thank you so much for coming on the show.

  • -Thank you for having me. -It's not the holiday season

  • without Mariah Carey.

  • Congrats on this, #1 best-selling author.

  • I love it. "The Meaning of Mariah Carey."

  • There's rumors that it's going to be adapted into a movie --

  • Is that -- Or a TV series?

  • And could you -- Is that true?

  • -We're talking about some things.

  • I really feel like it should. That was always my goal.

  • But it was important to write the book first,

  • 'cause there's so much,

  • and then to kind of pick and choose how we translate that.

  • -I also heard rumors

  • of Lee Daniels maybe circling this, too.

  • Just saying.

  • Could be a little reunion for you guys.

  • -We love Lee. We love Lee.

  • Lee is my -- He's one of my dearest friends,

  • and he gets me in a way that most people don't.

  • But I'm not allowed to say yes, no, maybe so.

  • Only Lee. Only Lee tells little leaks about things.

  • -I understand. Okay, yeah. I would never try to --

  • No "gotcha" questions here.

  • Who do you think would play you in the Mariah movie?

  • I don't -- Who could play Mariah Carey?

  • -I don't know. I don't know.

  • We're figuring out different takes on that.

  • I think it's more about an actress who can --

  • 'Cause there's a lot -- As you know, there's a lot of --

  • They're going to have to have quite the range.

  • The back cover's what I wanted to be the front cover,

  • 'cause that's little Mariah.

  • -But that little girl, I mean, wow,

  • and what she went to accomplish

  • and what she went through and persevered,

  • I think it's awesome.

  • I love that it's the back cover,

  • 'cause you go, "Oh, yeah." This is what you go, "Come on."

  • That's the Mariah Carey we all know.

  • And then you go, "Yeah, it all starts here.

  • It all begins here."

  • -And the hair is interwoven on the spine,

  • because it's all about the hair at the end of the day

  • if you look, the grown-up hair

  • and the little-girl hair. -It's the details.

  • -The details. It's the details. -It's attention to details.

  • That's what it's all about. We've talked about

  • "All I Want For Christmas Is You" on the show.

  • You were nice enough to do it with me and some kids

  • on the show with The Roots. -That was so fun.

  • That's still one of my favorite things.

  • -Then I go, "Well, this is great."

  • Was it last year, I want to say,

  • it was the 25th anniversary of the song or something,

  • and everyone online was like, "Let's make it the #1 song."

  • And I was like... -Yeah.

  • -...I'm all about it. Let's go. Let's go.

  • We were retweeting it --

  • And it became the #1 song again.

  • And I go, "Oh! Look at this."

  • It's the best. -It's amazing.

  • And I can't be -- I'm not casual about it.

  • I don't take it for granted.

  • Like, it's taken me all these years

  • to just listen to the song at Christmas

  • and enjoy it as a listener.

  • Like, for so long, I would put it on --

  • It's part of my Christmas playlist --

  • I would put it on and pick it apart.

  • Like, all the other artists' songs would come on,

  • and I'd just be enjoying the Christmas spirit.

  • And then I hear that, and I go, "Why did I keep that there?

  • Why didn't I change that?" -I love it.

  • See what goes through the artist's brain? Yeah.

  • What other songs are on your playlist?

  • -So many.

  • Like, every year, it's just -- It's a constant.

  • No one that's with me at Christmas

  • is allowed to listen to anything but Christmas music

  • until after New Year's.

  • Like, it's just a nonstarter. You can't do it.

  • As you can see, I'm kind of festive

  • by the backdrop we have here.

  • -I love that you did that.

  • -But you asked me about

  • my favorite Christmas songs, other artists.

  • I don't know what yours are, but I would --

  • Is it, like, a top-three situation?

  • -Yeah. Who would be your top three?

  • -I love Donny Hathaway, "This Christmas."

  • -Oh, yeah. ♪ Duh, duh, the mistletoe

  • -Yes.

  • I'm going to get to know you better.

  • And I love Nat King Cole, "The Christmas Song."

  • -♪ Chestnuts roast-- ♪

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's so good. He nails that.

  • -I love all the classics.

  • Bing Crosby, "White Christmas."

  • Like, you know, all of the classics.

  • There are so many good ones.

  • I even like -- There are so many great soundtracks.

  • Like, the "Elf" soundtrack is great.

  • Did you ever listen to that? -Yeah, of course.

  • -It is. I mean, I can't give away all my things, but --

  • No, there are so many good ones.

  • You know what else really people should listen to

  • is the "Jackson 5 Christmas Album." So good.

  • -Yeah, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is a great version.

  • -Mm-hmm. The whole album is good.

  • He actually did -- They did "Someday at Christmastime," too.

  • "Someday at Christmas."

  • -The "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special,"

  • the soundtrack to your special is also available now

  • at Apple Music.

  • You released the song

  • with Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande,

  • and it went straight to #1.

  • -The song we did together is "Oh Santa!"

  • I originally recorded it on "Merry Christmas To You,"

  • my second Christmas album.

  • And it was always going to be, like, a girl-group type vibe,

  • but I did it by myself and just layered the vocals

  • to feel like a '60s kind of Supremes thing.

  • So when Ariana and J.Hud came into the whole mix,

  • I was like, let's just figure out how to redo it.

  • Producing vocals is one of my favorite things to do

  • and layering background vocals and stuff like that.

  • So, you know, it was fun.

  • Also, Snoop and J.D. did "Here Comes Santa Claus" with me

  • on the special, which was the best 'cause it was last-minute.

  • And, you know, they came, and they showed up,

  • and I'm not going to say what Snoop was wearing,

  • but it's a classic.

  • -And you got Tiffany Haddish to be the narrator.

  • -Tiffany Haddish, yes, narrating.

  • -And you got the -- Snoopy.

  • You got the Peanuts gang. Come on.

  • -We got the Peanuts! -You got everything.

  • -It's the greatest thing ever, because I live for the Peanuts.

  • I got to have a scene with Woodstock.

  • Very excited about that,

  • and then they're actually singing my song,

  • which is, like, mind-blowing to me.

  • As a kid, I know you loved the Peanuts, too.

  • -Of course. -As a kid who grew up

  • loving Charlie Brown and all the characters,

  • like, just to have that happen, I'm just so thankful to Apple

  • and to the Schulz estate for this moment.

  • -The special's getting great reviews.

  • It's already a big hit.

  • I want to show everyone a clip. Here's Mariah Carey

  • in "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special."

  • Take a look at this.

  • -♪ Joy to the world

  • The Lord is come

  • Let Earth receive

  • Her King

  • Mm

  • -Mariah Carey, everybody!

  • "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special"

  • is streaming now on Apple TV Plus.

  • And check out her book, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey."
