  • Hi, I'm Liam. I'm a clinical nurse educator

  • and I'm here to talk to you about a job interview process

  • for a registered nurse.

  • I will ask you some common interview questions

  • and I recommend that you pause the video after each one

  • and think about how you'd respond.

  • Say your answers out loud as if you were in a real interview process.

  • You can even record yourself on a phone or a webcam

  • so you can watch it back to learn where to improve.

  • I'll finish up by giving you some tips on what I'd expect to hear

  • during a successful interview.

  • So why did you decide on a career in nursing?

  • Why is it that you want to work here?

  • What do you find most rewarding about the job?

  • Tell me what your greatest skill is.

  • How do you deal with someone that isn't satisfied with your care?

  • How do you manage the stress of the job?

  • Would you say you're a team player?

  • Are you comfortable working with other doctors and nurses?

  • How would you deal with a doctor that was rude?

  • What do you find is the hardest part of nursing?

  • Describe a time you dealt with a difficult patient.

  • How did you handle it?

  • Why are you the best nursing cadidate for this position?

  • Finally, do you have any questions for me?

  • So people come in to the nursing profession

  • predominantly to help others in their day to day lives.

  • As interviewers we often look for people who have a genuine desire

  • to help others, that show a level of empathy

  • and good personal insight.

  • So when people apply to work in the organisation

  • as the interviewer we're often looking for people that have done a lot of

  • research about the facility, or the organisation that they wish to work in.

  • So we're looking at things like their values, potentially their mission

  • and their core driving values that underpin

  • the practice that we deliver every day.

  • So stress is a key component of the nursing profession as well.

  • It is something that we all experience

  • and it's something that we need to manage.

  • It's really important that candidates demonstrate that they have support from others

  • and that they draw upon the supports that are around them.

  • That could be their manager, their peers

  • or that could be somebody with the Department.

  • So it's really essential the we make sure that we look after each other

  • and that we demonstrate that we can communicate effectively

  • and assist each other through the difficult times.

  • We're looking for candidates to demonstrate that they can

  • communicate effectively and work alongside their clinical managers

  • to de-escalate any kind of conflict that may arise

  • between the professional groups.

  • It's really important that we work as autonomous practitioners

  • but when we...but we must ensure that we work alongside our clinicians

  • in a safe and effective manner

  • so that we benefit the patient and we imrpove their outcomes.

  • As you prepare for your interview

  • it's essential that you think about some examples that you can provide on the day.

  • You can draw upon some experiences you may have had in a clinical practice setting

  • or you may draw upon some personal experiences.

  • It's essential you provide a structure to your answers

  • and always make sure that you focus on the patient element of the answer.

  • As you prepare for your interview it's really important that you

  • decide what you're going to wear so that you present yourself in a professional manner.

  • Be early. Arrive 15-20 minute prior to the interview

  • and take some time to settle in and calm the nerves.
