  • As our Indian viewers might know, India has a long list of official languages,

  • and each one is spoken by millions of people.

  • According to this chart based on a 2011 Census,

  • there are over 10 languages that have more first language speakers than English.

  • To put things into perspective, over 500 million people

  • Speak Hindi as a first language.

  • And around 100 million people speak Bengali.

  • Another 500 million people speak several different languages.

  • As a first language, English is only spoken by around 300,000 people.

  • However, as a second language English is spoken by more than 80 million people in India.

  • Deepika is actually a second, or even third language English speaker.

  • Her first being Konkani.

  • Putting her high English proficiency aside, she does speak with a strong Indian accent.

  • The question about whether to strive to lose your accent, or to keep it

  • has been discussed by academics for many years.

  • Certainly, you need to make sure that you have clear pronunciation

  • and speak clearly also.

  • You don't want it to keep you from communicating effectively.

  • So, for example, saying "soap",

  • instead of "soup" when ordering your meal at a restaurant,

  • is not only going to cause a communication problem

  • but likely also embarrassment.

  • However, there are many people who learn english as a second language,

  • and take pride in learning a new accent.

  • Others however, who do have a high level of speaking English,

  • like Deepika, do still have a strong accent.

  • English as a second language speakers

  • have at some point made the conscious, or unconscious decision to not pursue a

  • foreign accent. Be it American, British or otherwise.

  • In other cases, some speakers are very vague about it.

  • So, while some speakers might have a specific goal in mind,

  • others just tend not to really think too much about it.

  • In this lesson we will analyze the aspects of Deepika's pronunciation

  • in English that make her have a strong accent.

  • Do you want to master native vocabulary and pronunciation?

  • on the areas of your English that are stopping you from progressing,

  • be it in your career or your social life, or even other areas.

  • Deepika is an incredible English speaker, that can inspire English learners

  • to follow their dreams.
