  • -Yo!

  • -Yes. What's happening?

  • -Oh, my gosh.

  • Who is this? What the heck?

  • I love that, man.

  • That's a good look.

  • -I got the full. You know what I'm sayin'?

  • I had to -- Because I was like,

  • "What's the quarantine version of the like Fallon...?"

  • [ Laughing ] You know what I'm sayin'?

  • -You look good, man.

  • I miss seein' ya, man.

  • I wanna get into everything.

  • There are so many things to talk about.

  • But let's just jump right into this.

  • Did you know that "Hamilton" was gonna come out early?

  • -Absolutely not. I found out the day everybody else found out.

  • I found out in a Zoom interview, like this.

  • Somebody asked me a question about it and I had to pull up --

  • [ Mumbling ] "What do you mean?"

  • -So, wait. They're releasing "Hamilton" July 3rd

  • on Disney+.

  • -Yeah, man. -July 3rd is going

  • to break television.

  • It's like everyone's gonna watch it.

  • Have you -- have you ever -- this will be the first time

  • you're actually gonna see you perform, right?

  • -Yeah. -Are you gonna watch?

  • -I think it's unavoidable.

  • Hopefully, we'll like get together on a Zoom or something.

  • I'm terrified of that.

  • I'm very happy for everybody else.

  • Everybody seems very excited about it.

  • I don't like watchin' myself, man.

  • -Really? -I don't. I really don't.

  • It weirds me out. And the reason I love plays

  • is because I never have to, you know?

  • [ Laughter ] -Yeah.

  • -So, it's gonna be a particularly strange

  • experience, I think, for me

  • to have to struggle through that,

  • but I'm sure I'll do it one time.

  • -It is truly groundbreaking and outstanding.

  • I can't wait for you to see yourself!

  • You're gonna love it! -Oh, man.

  • -You're gonna be in love with --

  • You're gonna be like, "I love that actor.

  • I love Daveed Diggs."

  • -We'll see. We'll see. I'm probably gonna be like,

  • "What the hell is he doing with his eyebrow?"

  • the whole time, you know? Like I don't know.

  • I'll come up with something really specific

  • to hate about it. That's part...

  • -No. My God! -...of my process, Jimmy.

  • -Yeah, exactly.

  • I don't wanna change you at all, man.

  • -Yeah, yeah. Let me do my thing.

  • -What's going on with Clipping? We always talk

  • about your group when you come on,

  • your rap group, Clipping. -Yeah.

  • Yeah. We've got -- I mean, you know,

  • this downtime has allowed us to focus on some things.

  • We were supposed to go on a tour.

  • We had to cancel our tour.

  • We had like 60 dates booked.

  • We were really looking forward to it.

  • But, obviously, that can't happen right now.

  • But we also were supposed to put out

  • this live album we were calling "Double Live,"

  • on Record Store Day.

  • We recorded it live

  • during our tour with The Flaming Lips.

  • We did a tour opening

  • [ Laughing ] for The Flaming Lips...

  • -Wow. -...and invited our friend

  • Christopher Fleeger along,

  • who's an incredible sound artist,

  • and what he did is, during our sound check,

  • he would run all over whatever venue we were playing at

  • and put mics in odd places.

  • He'd stick a hydrophone down a sink in a bathroom

  • or put a contact mic up against the --

  • the air-conditioning unit or put mics in trees outside.

  • Anywhere that, while we were warming up,

  • felt like it was making an interesting kind of sound.

  • And we got all of these beautiful hours and hours

  • of recording, whole concerts recorded

  • from a bunch of different microphones in each venue

  • that, then, him and Bill Hutson edited together

  • into this live album that is kind of a document

  • of what happens to the venue while we are performing.

  • It's... -Weird!

  • -...wild. I'm obsessed with it.

  • I've never heard anything like it

  • and I can't wait for everyone to hear it,

  • if it's anybody's taste but ours. Who knows?

  • But I think it's kind of the coolest idea

  • for a live album that I've ever encountered.

  • I find it totally fascinating, so.

  • -I wanna talk about "Snowpiercer"

  • because this is trending every day on Twitter

  • and I go, "What is happening with 'Snowpiercer'?"

  • -[ Laughs ]

  • -Dude, this is like crazy.

  • I love the movie.

  • -Yeah. -That was Chris Evans.

  • -Yeah, yeah.

  • -It was Bong Joon-ho. -Yeah.

  • -Can you explain what "Snowpiercer" is?

  • -So, in this version of it, we are seven years past

  • a climate event that causes the whole world to freeze over.

  • So nobody can go outside --

  • in case that sounds familiar to anyone --

  • [ Laughing ] and where all

  • the rest of humanity that is left alive

  • is stuck on this train called the Snowpiercer

  • that's 1,001 cars long, massive train.

  • It circles the Earth and, as long

  • as it doesn't stop moving, everybody stays alive.

  • The really wealthy people, who could buy

  • very expensive tickets,

  • stay up in the front, in first class;

  • and the class system works its way back down

  • 'til we get to the Tail, where my character,

  • Andre Layton, is from, lives,

  • and this is the class of basically stowaways

  • who boarded the train

  • in a last-ditch effort to save their lives.

  • Kinda fought their way onto the train

  • and were allowed passage,

  • but no participation in the community of the train,

  • no social services, no nothing.

  • They have to work.

  • They're fed a bare minimum.

  • And so, anyway,

  • early on in the series, there's a murder uptrain

  • and just so happens, Andre Layton was

  • a homicide detective back before The Freeze.

  • So, now, they need his services,

  • so they come back and pull me out of The Tail

  • and that sort of starts

  • my journey of trying to build more information,

  • in order to have a successful revolution

  • for my people back in The Tail,

  • who have been plotting revolution for many years.

  • -And it's you and Jennifer Connelly?

  • -Jennifer Connelly, yeah.

  • -Oh, she's magic. -And an incredible cast,

  • you know. Everybody in this show is.

  • But, yeah, Jennifer is -- -Also, the idea of it, too,

  • it's a graphic novel, right, this is based off of?

  • -Yeah. Yeah. -It's a brilliant story.

  • And Bong Joon-ho, from what I heard,

  • came to the set to see you guys, or to visit the set?

  • -Yeah, yeah. He came a couple of times.

  • He's always so nice.

  • He mostly was just marveled

  • at how many train cars we had

  • 'cause he had to shoot his whole film on basically one car

  • that they redressed every time they ran through it,

  • which makes that film even more amazing.

  • -I'm so psyched it's coming out.

  • We ask everyone that comes on our show --

  • and thanks again for coming on --

  • to highlight a charity or something

  • that they wanna talk about during this time.

  • You chose something that I'm so interested in.

  • -It's a GoFundMe from Marcus Books,

  • which is the oldest Black-owned bookstore in the country.

  • It is in Oakland, California, where I'm from.

  • I recently did a fundraiser for them, but,

  • Marcus Books, besides being an incredible bookstore --

  • and bookstores are one of those things.

  • I love books and I love bookstores

  • and it's one of those... -Me too.

  • -...stores like that are one of these casualties

  • of this crisis, that go kind of unseen,

  • in a lotta ways, right?

  • And it's a wonderful store and a wonderful resource

  • that you can also order from online.

  • They are still selling books.

  • So go look up Marcus Books, if you wanna help support them.

  • But also, just as a writer and artist

  • and thinker, growing up, was a really important

  • community space for me and for my peers

  • and people who, you know,

  • sort of grew up in a scene together

  • and really connected us to a history

  • of art and activism in Oakland

  • and it's a space that's really dear to my heart

  • and is one of these important community spaces

  • that I don't wanna see get lost in the shuffle here.

  • So that GoFundMe is raising funds,

  • just to help keep the bookstore alive

  • and maintain operational costs.

  • -It's important to support any local bookstore, obviously,

  • but I love that you're the first person to bring up

  • trying to raise money for a bookstore.

  • Between that, "Snowpiercer,"

  • Clipping, and "Hamilton,"

  • I got a lotta Daveed on my TV

  • and on my speakers this whole -- -Wow, man.

  • It's gonna be a wild summer.

  • -Thank you so much for coming on the show.

  • I can't wait to see you in person.

  • Bye, bud. Take care.

-Yo!
