TV shows, movies and listening to music are some of the best ways to learn how to speak like a native. This is one of the reasons why many people choose English names from popular series such as Friends or The Big Bang Theory. I\u2019ve lost count of the number of Chandlers and Phoebes I\u2019ve met over the years!<\/p>\n

While these shows are great for learning American English, what if you want to visit other English-speaking countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or the UK?<\/p>\n

If you are planning to study abroad or do a working holiday in one of these places, chances are you will encounter accents and words that sound alien(1)<\/b> even to other native English speakers.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, here is a list of some unique dialect words, as well as the best things to watch and listen to if you want to master some of the less commonly heard versions of the English.<\/p>\n

Australia<\/b><\/h2>\n

Key dialect word:<\/b> Crook<\/p>\n

In most English-speaking countries, \u201ccrook<\/b>\u201d is another word for a criminal or someone who is dishonest. But if someone in Australia tells you they are “feeling crook<\/b>,” wait a minute before phoning the police! In Australia, crook<\/b> can also mean to be or feel sick, or to get angry with someone.<\/p>\n

Lachlan:<\/b> Do you want to come cycling with us today?<\/em><\/p>\n

Banjo:<\/b> Ah nah mate, I\u2019m feeling crook [sick],<\/b> I\u2019m going to stay at home and recover.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lachlan:<\/b> But you promised you would come with us!<\/em><\/p>\n

Banjo: <\/b>Don\u2019t go crook [angry]<\/b> on me for getting crook [sick]<\/b>!<\/em><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/b> The Castle<\/em><\/p>\n

What to listen to: <\/b>The Chats<\/p>\n

The Chats went viral a few years ago with their song \u201cSmoko.\u201d As well as providing an introduction to the Queensland accent, it also gives you another Australian word to learn. Short for \u201csmoking break,\u201d smoko is also used to mean taking a break in general.<\/p>\n

Banjo:<\/b> Can you help me with this?<\/em><\/p>\n

Lachlan:<\/b> I\u2019m on smoko!<\/strong> So leave me alone!<\/em><\/p>\n

New Zealand<\/b><\/h2>\n

Key dialect word: Tramping<\/strong><\/p>\n

In many places, a tramp is someone who is homeless, such as the homeless dog in the movie The Lady and in the Tramp.<\/em> For New Zealanders, however, saying that someone enjoys \u201ctramping” <\/strong>is more of a compliment than an insult. Appropriately for a country that is filled with breathtaking scenery, tramping<\/strong> means to go out and enjoy nature by hiking and camping.<\/p>\n

Bret:<\/strong> What are your plans for the weekend, Jermaine?<\/em><\/p>\n

Jermaine:<\/strong> Me and Murray and are going to go tramping<\/strong> up Mount Taranaki. Do you want to come?<\/em><\/p>\n

Bret:<\/strong> Sounds good! I just bought a new tent and hiking boots.<\/em><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/b> Flight of the Conchords<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the most difficult hurdles when learning a language is mastering humor. American humor is quite direct and their shows often have a laugh track(2)<\/b>\u00a0to let you know when something funny has been said. On the other hand, comedy shows where nobody laughs or even smiles are good for learning more subtle forms of humor. One such show is Flight of the Conchords<\/em>, which tells the tale of New Zealand\u2019s fourth-most-popular folk parody(3)<\/b> musical duo as they try to make it big in America.<\/p>\n

What to listen to:<\/strong> Flight of the Conchords<\/p>\n

Not only are Flight of the Conchords great comedians, their music is also really good. Most of their songs are short stories, which makes them easy to follow and full of useful vocabulary.<\/p>\n

Manchester<\/h2>\n

Key dialect word:<\/strong> Sound<\/p>\n

\u201cSound\u201d<\/strong> is another\u00a0 common English word that has a very different meaning in certain places. Most of the time, sound<\/strong> means either a noise or something that is solid, e.g. \u201cthis building is structurally sound.\u201d In Manchester and the surrounding region of Lancashire, however, sound<\/strong> can also be used to say that something is good or agreeable.<\/p>\n

Liam:<\/strong> What do you think of Gary\u2019s new girlfriend?<\/em><\/p>\n

Noel:<\/strong> She\u2019s sound.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n

Liam:<\/strong> Sound<\/b> mate. What time do you want to play football? 8 p.m.?<\/em><\/p>\n

Noel:<\/strong> <\/em>Sound.<\/em> <\/b><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/strong> Shameless<\/em><\/p>\n

Shameless<\/em> is a black comedy(4) <\/b>about the struggles of the poor Frank Gallagher and his family. While the show is quintessentially(5)<\/b> English, <\/b>an American version is also one of the longest-running series currently on TV in the U.S.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

What to listen to:<\/strong> Oasis<\/p>\n

Manchester has produced loads of famous bands, but Oasis is perhaps the best known. Oasis is almost as famous for the constant fighting between the two brothers in the band, Noel and Liam Gallagher, as it is for its music.<\/p>\n

Ireland<\/h2>\n

Key dialect word:<\/strong> Craic\/crack<\/p>\n

Like many of the dialect words on this list \u201ccraic,\u201d<\/strong> also spelled \u201ccrack,\u201d<\/strong> has several meanings. The first use is when asking about what plans someone has. This takes the form of the question: \u201cWhat\u2019s the craic<\/strong>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Seamus:<\/strong> What\u2019s the craic<\/strong> [plan]<\/strong> for tonight?<\/em><\/p>\n

Se\u00e1n:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to go to the pub around 8 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n

The second use is a little bit more difficult to explain. Often it is used in place of the phrase \u201cwe had a really good time,\u201d with craic<\/strong> as a replacement for \u201ctime\u201d or \u201cfun\u201d:<\/p>\n

Seamus:<\/strong> How was your night at the pub yesterday?<\/em><\/p>\n

Sean:<\/strong> It was right good craic<\/strong>. There was a band playing.<\/em><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/strong> Father Ted<\/em>; Foil, Arms and Hog<\/em><\/p>\n

There is no bigger Irish stereotype(6)<\/b> than Catholic priests and drinking alcohol, both of which are prominent in the Irish comedy series Father Ted<\/em>. The show is about a priest named Ted as he struggles to look after two other priests, the alcoholic(7)<\/b> Jack and the dimwitted(8)<\/b> Dougal.<\/p>\n

Another great choice is the YouTube sketch comedy(9)<\/b> group Foil, Arms and Hog<\/em>, whose videos are available on VoiceTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What to listen to:<\/strong> Fontaines D.C.<\/p>\n

Many bands try to sound American despite not being from there, but one group that has kept their Dublin accents is the Fontaines D.C., making them essential listening for those going to Ireland.<\/p>\n

Northern Ireland<\/h2>\n

Key dialect word:<\/strong> Buck eejit<\/p>\n

While they share an island, English in Northern Ireland still has some differences with Irish English, and is more of a mixture of Irish English and Scottish English. \u201cBuck eejit\u201d<\/strong> is a phrase that may sound like another language, but is actually just Northern Irish for \u201cidiot.\u201d<\/p>\n

William:<\/strong> Fergal, why is the front door all sticky?<\/em><\/p>\n

Fergal:<\/strong> You buck eejit<\/strong>! It\u2019s covered in wet paint! Didn\u2019t you see the sign I put up?<\/em><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/strong> Derry Girls<\/em><\/p>\n

Derry Girls<\/em> is about a group of Northern Irish girls and one unfortunate English boy at an all-girls high school in the 1990s, and is a great introduction to the accents and humor of Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n

What to listen to:<\/strong> The Undertones<\/p>\n

Because of their simplicity and the light-hearted nature of their songs, with most of the lyrics about things like football, chocolate, and girls, The Undertones are great for language learners.<\/p>\n

Scotland<\/h2>\n

Key dialect word:<\/strong> How?<\/p>\n

As someone from Scotland, I could fill a book with unusual and unique Scottish dialect words. But instead of going into words that only exist in Scotland, I thought I would keep it simple with an English word that has a slightly different meaning in Scotland, and one that regularly confuses the uninitiated.(10)<\/b><\/p>\n

When wanting to ask someone \u201cwhy,\u201d people in Scotland will often say: \u201cHow?\u201d<\/strong> At first, it may sound like someone is asking you \u201chow is this possible?\u201d However, most of the time they are not questioning whether or not what you said could have been done, but rather why it was done. Variations include \u201chow come?\u201d<\/strong> and \u201chow\u2019s [is] that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tam:<\/strong> I\u2019m going to have to get my car fixed.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Wullie:<\/strong> How?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Tam:<\/strong> There\u2019s a problem with the engine.<\/em><\/p>\n

What to watch:<\/strong> Chewin\u2019 the Fat<\/em><\/p>\n

Chewin\u2019 the Fat<\/em> is a sketch comedy series set in Glasgow, Scotland\u2019s biggest city. Not only will this provide an introduction to the most difficult Scottish accents, it also will help you learn the Scottish sense of humor, which can be quite d<\/b>ry.(11)<\/strong> For outsiders, Scottish people\u2019s love of sarcasm and their tendency to joke with a straight face and a serious tone can sometimes cause confusion.<\/p>\n

What to listen to:<\/strong> The Proclaimers<\/p>\n

Apart from being famous for walking 500 miles and then walking 500 more for the girl they love in their song \u201cI\u2019m Gonna Be (500 Miles),\u201d The Proclaimers are best known for their strong Edinburgh accents. This makes listening to their music useful for anyone planning to visit or move to the city.<\/p>\n

Vocabulary<\/h3>\n

1. <\/b>alien<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: belonging or relating to another person, place, or thing, strange<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ex: The idea of sleeping late is totally alien<\/strong> to me. I’ve always been an early riser.<\/p>\n

2. <\/b>laugh track<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: recorded laughter that accompanies dialogue or action
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ex: Most sitcoms use a laugh track<\/strong> to try and make a show seem funnier than it really is.<\/p>\n

3. <\/b>parody<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: a piece of creative work that closely imitates a particular style for comic effect
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ex: His latest painting is a parody<\/strong> of contemporary art.<\/p>\n

4. black comedy<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: humor that is often morbid or ironic<\/p>\n

Ex: I prefer black comedies<\/strong> to ones that are overly cheerful.<\/p>\n

5. <\/b>quintessentially<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: perfectly typical or representative of a particular kind of person or thing <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Ex: Tea is a quintessentially English drink.<\/p>\n

6. <\/b>stereotype<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: an oversimplified and often prejudice idea of something<\/p>\n

Ex: The idea that all Irish people are drunken idiots is just a stereotype<\/strong>. The country has 11 Nobel laureates!<\/p>\n

7. <\/b>alcoholic<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: someone who is addicted to alcohol<\/p>\n

Ex: I used to be an alcoholic<\/strong> but I haven’t had a drink for three years now.<\/p>\n

8. <\/b>dimwitted<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: someone who is quite stupid or who unthinkingly does stupid things<\/p>\n

Ex: Make sure you stay close to him when you’re out cycling. He’s a quite dimwitted<\/strong> and I’m worried he’ll get into an accident.<\/p>\n

9. <\/b>sketch comedy <\/b><\/p>\n

Def: a comedy show that consists of shorts scenes or \u201csketches”<\/p>\n

Ex: My school put on a sketch comedy<\/strong> show so that everyone would have a chance to perform.<\/p>\n

10. <\/b>uninitiated<\/b><\/p>\n

Def: lacking knowledge of or experience with something<\/span><\/span><\/span>, inexperienced<\/p>\n

Ex: Rock climbing can be quite intimidating for the uninitiated<\/strong>, but I’m sure you’ll quickly get the hang of it.<\/p>\n

11. dry<\/strong><\/p>\n

Def: something or someone that does not giving off warmth or enthusiasm<\/p>\n
