Let\u2019s face it, native speakers love idioms! We use them all the time–every day, actually. Like a nice piece of chocolate or candy, they sweeten our language and make it more interesting. I am here to tell you that idioms are fun, and if you can learn some idioms yourself, you will be that much closer to sounding like a native English speaker! If you read this blog, you will find out what an idiom is and learn three new idioms, \u201cunder the weather\u201d, \u201cyou can say that again\u201d, and \u201cno pain, no gain\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The online definition of an idiom is pretty hard to understand, so here is an easy definition: an idiom is a phrase where the words have a different meaning than their literal definitions. .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Let\u2019s look at \u201cunder the weather\u201d. The literal definition? Maybe you are under a rain cloud–or hiding under an umbrella under the sun? Nope, sorry! This idiom has nothing to do with actual weather. See? The meaning of this idiom cannot be understood by the literal definition of the phrase. It\u2019s special, but most languages have their own idioms too. Here are a few cool idioms from other languages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Chinese: \u591a\u624d\u591a\u85dd\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Translation: More ability, more skills<\/span><\/p>\n English: Multi-talented<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n German: Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei.<\/p>\n Translation: Everything has one end, only the sausage has two.<\/span><\/p>\n English: Everything comes to an end.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Japanese: \u733f\u3082\u6728\u304b\u3089\u843d\u3061\u308b.<\/p>\n Translation: Even monkeys fall from trees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n English: Everyone makes mistakes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Okay, <\/span>so now we know under the weather has nothing to do with real weather–so, what does it mean then? It actually means to be sick. If you are under the weather, you are sick. Maybe you have a cold, a fever, or just don\u2019t feel well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Def.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n under the weather – To be sick or not feeling well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ex.1\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I am a bit <\/span>under the weather<\/b> today. My throat hurts, and I am coughing.<\/span><\/p>\n Ex 2.<\/span><\/p>\n Steve: Hey man, where were you on Saturday? I thought you were going to come out for a drink?<\/span><\/p>\n Mike:\u00a0 Sorry, I was <\/span>under the weather<\/b> all weekend. I was too tired to get out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 3<\/span><\/p>\n Tiffany: I feel <\/span>under the weather<\/b>. I don\u2019t want to go to work.<\/span><\/p>\n Ben: You\u2019ve been sick twice this month. You can\u2019t take more time off.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n This idiom is difficult to understand because it sounds like you would want somebody to say something again, but in most cases, you don\u2019t. It just means you agree with something. Let\u2019s take a look at the definition and examples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Def.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n you can say that again – something you completely agree with<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 1<\/span><\/p>\n Layla: Oh my god! That test was so hard! I think I failed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Sunny: Yeah,<\/span> you can say that again<\/b>. I hated that test.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Both Layla and Sunny are talking about what a hard test it was and how much they hated it. Sunny says, \u201cyou can say that again,\u201d\u00a0 because she was thinking the same thing as Layla. If Sunny thought the test was easy, she wouldn\u2019t have said this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 2<\/span><\/p>\n Matt: Wow, did you see Anna today? She looked amazing!<\/span><\/p>\n Chris: <\/span>You can say that again!\u201d<\/b> I wish she were my girlfriend.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n As you can see, the agreement should be strong. If Chris thought Anna didn\u2019t look amazing, he wouldn\u2019t have used this idiom, but clearly, both Matt and Chris noticed that Anna looked amazing before they chatted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 3<\/span><\/p>\n May: I am so sick of this rain!<\/span><\/p>\n Liam: <\/span>You can say that again!<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n 5\u00a0Reasons Why You Should NEVER Exercise<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 If you\u2019ve walked by a gym, there is a good chance that you saw this idiom before. A lot of gyms like to put “no pain, no gain” on their ads or somewhere on the wall. If you exercise, there is a good chance you\u2019ve heard somebody say this in English. So what does it mean?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Def.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n no pain, no gain – we need to suffer in order to accomplish something<\/span><\/p>\n While this saying is mostly used with exercise and sports, it can also apply to other tasks that use the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 1<\/span><\/p>\n Amy: I want to exercise, but I hate having sore muscles. It hurts.<\/span><\/p>\n Michelle: \u201c<\/span>No pain, no gain<\/b>. You need to feel those muscles burn to get in shape.<\/span><\/p>\n Ex. 2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Tom: Writing fiction is so hard. I have good ideas, but I always get lazy about writing.<\/span><\/p>\n Ray: <\/span>No pain, no gain<\/b> Tom.
