It originated in the <strong><em>19th Century<\/em><\/strong> (<em>the time period from 1801 to 1900, including both<\/em>) in England. It is called like this because at that time it was one of the many sports played using a ball and the players&#8217; feet, and its rules were defined by the\u00a0<strong>Football Association<\/strong>, so people started referring to it as\u00a0<strong>Association Football<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%; align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.voicetube.com\/embed\/25958\" width=\"560\" height=\"525\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voicetube.com\/videos\/25958?utm_source=football1&#038;utm_medium=VoiceTube%20Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><br \/>\n<strong><em style=\"\u201calign: center\u201d;\">Problems understanding this video? Watch it on VoiceTube and unleash the full power of your English!<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>When we say everybody is playing it, we mean EVERYBODY<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This sport is also known as\u00a0<em><strong>soccer<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>or simply\u00a0<strong><em>football<\/em><\/strong>. This is a bit confusing for many people because there are other sports known as\u00a0<em>football<\/em>. Some of the most popular are\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\u201d href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_football\"><em>American football<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\u201d href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rugby_union\"><em>rugby union or rugby football<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\u201d \n href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaelic_football\"><em>Gaelic football<\/em><\/a> and\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\u201d href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australian_rules_football\"><em>Australian rules football<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The confusion doesn&#8217;t end there; in the places where this sport is known as\u00a0<em>football<\/em>, it also has other names such as\u00a0<em>footie<\/em> or\u00a0<em>footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So, How do we know which sport a person is talking about if they just say\u00a0<em>football<\/em>?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the individual is from <strong>the United Kingdom<\/strong>, they are most likely\u00a0referring to Association Football.<\/li>\n<li>If they are from <strong>the United States or Canada<\/strong>, the word\u00a0<em>football<\/em> tends to refer to\u00a0<em>American <\/em>football, <b>not<\/b>\u00a0<em>association<\/em> football. North American English speakers\u00a0use the word\u00a0<em>soccer<\/em>\u00a0(which comes from the word <em>association<\/em>)\u00a0to refer to Association Football.<\/li>\n<li>If the person is from\u00a0<strong>Australia<\/strong>, it is likely that when they say\u00a0<em>football<\/em> they mean either\u00a0<em>Australian rules football<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>rugby football<\/em>, but some people have started using\u00a0<em>football<\/em> there to refer to\u00a0<em>association football<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>If the person is from <strong>another English-speaking country<\/strong> such as New Zealand, the best way is to ask them if they refer to\u00a0association football or to another sport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that you know how it&#8217;s called, you can start enjoying it! The first step is to <em>watch <\/em>(not\u00a0<em>see<\/em>) a <em>match <\/em>or\u00a0<em>game<\/em> (both words can be used, but\u00a0<em>match<\/em> is a bit more formal).\u00a0It doesn&#8217;t matter whether you&#8217;re going to the\u00a0<em>stadium<\/em> or watching it\u00a0<em>on tv<\/em>, you can use the verb\u00a0<em>watch<\/em> in both situations. When you watch the match, you are a\u00a0<em>spectator<\/em>, somebody who watches the match.<\/p>\n<p>to watch + a +\u00a0<em>football<\/em> (or other similar sport) + game \/ match + on tv \/ at the stadium<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s practise with some sample sentences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>We are going to watch a soccer match at the stadium.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I will <strong>watch a soccer game<\/strong> tonight <strong>on TV<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I have never <strong>watched a football association match<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The tickets were very expensive, but there were still a lot of <strong>spectators<\/strong> <strong>watching the match<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is only the beginning!
